मस्तिष्कमस्य यतमो ललाटं ककाटिकां प्रथमो यः कपालम् । चित्वा चित्यं हन्वोः पूरुषस्य दिवं रुरोह कतमः स देवः
Who made his brain, his forehead, the crown, and the first skull-bone? Having constructed the jaw of the person, which god ascended to the sky?
प्रियाप्रियाणि बहुला स्वप्नं संबाधतन्द्र्यः । आनन्दान् उग्रो नन्दांश्च कस्माद्वहति पूरुषः
Pleasures and pains, abundant dreams, crowded sleep and weariness—why does the person bear fierce joys and delights?
आर्तिरवर्तिर्निर्ऋतिः कुतो नु पुरुषेऽमतिः । राद्धिः समृद्धिरव्यृद्धिर्मतिरुदितयः कुतः
From where do pain and relief, destruction and folly arise in a person? From where do success, prosperity, decline, intelligence, and cries come?
{४} को अस्मिन्न् आपो व्यदधात्विषूवृतः पुरूवृतः सिन्धुसृत्याय जाताः । तीव्रा अरुणा लोहिनीस्ताम्रधूम्रा ऊर्ध्वा अवाचीः पुरुषे तिरश्चीः
Who placed the waters in him, enveloped in brightness, flowing in many streams, born to run like rivers? Fierce, reddish, blood-red, coppery, smoky, rising upward, downward, and across the person—who made them?
को अस्मिन् रूपमदधात्को मह्मानं च नाम च । गातुं को अस्मिन् कः केतुं कश्चरित्रानि पूरुषे
Who gave him form, who greatness, and who a name? Who set forth his movement, who his sign, and who his behaviors in the person?
को अस्मिन् प्राणमवयत्को अपानं व्यानमु । समानमस्मिन् को देवोऽधि शिश्राय पूरुषे
Who established breath in him, who the outgoing and diffusive airs? Which god placed the equalizing breath within the person?
को अस्मिन् यज्ञमदधादेको देवोऽधि पूरुषे । को अस्मिन्त्सत्यं कोऽनृतं कुतो मृत्युः कुतोऽमृतम्
Who placed sacrifice within him, which god is established in the person? What is truth in him, what is falsehood, whence comes death, and whence immortality?
को अस्मै वासः पर्यदधात्को अस्यायुरकल्पयत्। बलं को अस्मै प्रायच्छत्को अस्याकल्पयज्जवम्
Who clothed him, who allotted his lifespan? Who gave him strength, and who endowed him with swiftness?
केनापो अन्वतनुत केनाहरकरोद्रुचे । उषसं केनान्वैन्द्ध केन सायंभवं ददे
By whom did the waters spread, by whom was the dawn made to shine? By whom was the morning kindled, and by whom was evening given?
को अस्मिन् रेतो न्यदधात्तन्तुरा तायतामिति । मेधां को अस्मिन्न् अध्यौहत्को बाणं को नृतो दधौ
Who placed the seed in him, saying, 'Let the thread be stretched'? Who poured wisdom into him, who set the arrow and the dancer in him?
केनेमां भूमिमौर्णोत्केन पर्यभवद्दिवम् । केनाभि मह्ना पर्वतान् केन कर्माणि पुरुषः
By whom was this earth supported, by whom was the sky encompassed? By whose greatness are the mountains, and by whom are the deeds of the person?
केन पर्जन्यमन्वेति केन सोमं विचक्षणम् । केन यज्ञं च श्रद्धां च केनास्मिन् निहितं मनः
By whom does the rain-cloud move, by whom is the discerning Soma known? By whom are sacrifice and faith, and by whom is the mind placed in him?
केन श्रोत्रियमाप्नोति केनेमं परमेष्ठिनम् । केनेममग्निं पूरुषः केन संवत्सरं ममे
By what does one attain sacred knowledge, by what the highest state? By what does the person obtain this fire, and by what does he measure the year?
{५} ब्रह्म श्रोत्रियमाप्नोति ब्रह्मेमं परमेष्ठिनम् । ब्रह्मेममग्निं पूरुषो ब्रह्म संवत्सरं ममे
Through Brahman, one attains sacred knowledge; through Brahman, the highest state. Through Brahman, the person obtains this fire; through Brahman, he measures the year.
केन देवामनु क्षियति केन दैवजनीर्विशः । केनेदमन्यन् नक्षत्रं केन सत्क्षत्रमुच्यते
By what does the divine man dwell, by what do the divine peoples exist? By what is this other constellation, by what is the true kṣatra (power) declared?
ब्रह्म देवामनु क्षियति ब्रह्म दैवजनीर्विशः । ब्रह्मेदमन्यन् नक्षत्रं ब्रह्म सत्क्षत्रमुच्यते
By Brahman does the divine man dwell, by Brahman do the divine peoples exist; by Brahman is this other constellation, by Brahman is the true kṣatra declared.
केनेयं भूमिर्विहिता केन द्यौरुत्तरा हिता । केनेदमूर्ध्वं तिर्यक्चान्तरिक्षं व्यचो हितम्
By what was this earth established, by what was the upper sky set? By what was this expanse, both above and across, the atmosphere, arranged?
ब्रह्मणा भूमिर्विहिता ब्रह्म द्यौरुत्तरा हिता । ब्रह्मेदमूर्ध्वं तिर्यक्चान्तरिक्षं व्यचो हितम्
By Brahman was the earth established, by Brahman was the upper sky set; by Brahman was this expanse, both above and across, the atmosphere, arranged.
मूर्धानमस्य संसीव्याथर्वा हृदयं च यत्। मस्तिष्कादूर्ध्वः प्रैरयत्पवमानोऽधि शीर्षतः
Atharvan sewed together his head and heart; from above the brain, the purifying one sent forth, over the head.
तद्वा अथर्वणः शिरो देवकोशः समुब्जितः । तत्प्राणो अभि रक्षति शिरो अन्नमथो मनः
That is the head of Atharvan, the divine vessel, well-formed; breath protects that head, as food and mind.
ऊर्ध्वो नु सृष्टा३ तिर्यङ्नु सृष्टा३ सर्वा दिशः पुरुष आ बभूवा३ । पुरं यो ब्रह्मणो वेद यस्याः पुरुष उच्यते
Upright he was created, across he was created, in all directions the person came to be; he who knows the city of Brahman, he is called the person of it.
यो वै तां ब्रह्मणो वेदामृतेनावृतां पुरम् । तस्मै ब्रह्म च ब्राह्माश्च चक्षुः प्राणं प्रजां ददुः
He who knows that city of Brahman, covered with immortality, to him Brahman and the Brāhmaṇas gave sight, breath, and offspring.
न वै तं चक्षुर्जहाति न प्राणो जरसः पुरा । पुरं यो ब्रह्मणो वेद यस्याः पुरुष उच्यते
Neither does the eye abandon him, nor breath, before old age, who knows the city of Brahman, whose person is so called.
अष्टाचक्रा नवद्वारा देवानां पूरयोध्या । तस्यां हिरण्ययः कोशः स्वर्गो ज्योतिषावृतः
Eight-wheeled, with nine gates, is the city of the gods to be dwelt in; within it is a golden treasury, heaven, wrapped in light.
तस्मिन् हिरण्यये कोशे त्र्यरे त्रिप्रतिष्ठिते । तस्मिन् यद्यक्षमात्मन्वत्तद्वै ब्रह्मविदो विदुः
In that golden treasury, threefold, with three supports, whatever is the self within, that indeed the knowers of Brahman know.
प्रभ्राजमानां हरिणीं यशसा संपरीवृताम् । पुरं हिरण्ययीं ब्रह्मा विवेशापराजिताम्
Radiant, tawny, surrounded by glory, Brahman entered the golden city, unconquered.
अयं मे वरणो मणिः सपत्नक्षयणो वृषा । तेना रभस्व त्वं शत्रून् प्र मृणीहि दुरस्यतः
This is my amulet of protection, a jewel for the destruction of rivals, powerful; with it, seize your enemies, strike down the hostile.
प्रैणान् छृणीहि प्र मृणा रभस्व मणिस्ते अस्तु पुरएता पुरस्तात्। अवारयन्त वरणेन देवा अभ्याचारमसुराणां श्वःश्वः
Cut them off, strike down, seize; let the jewel be your leader in front. With this protection, the gods warded off the approach of the Asuras, day by day.
अयं मणिर्वरणो विश्वभेषजः सहस्राक्षो हरितो हिरण्ययः । स ते शत्रून् अधरान् पादयाति पूर्वस्तान् दभ्नुहि ये त्वा द्विषन्ति
This jewel of protection is a universal remedy, thousand-eyed, green, golden; it will cause your enemies to fall below, subdue those who hate you from before.
अयं ते कृत्यां विततां पौरुषेयादयं भयात्। अयं त्वा सर्वस्मात्पापाद्वरणो वारयिष्यते
This will ward off the spell stretched against you, this will ward off fear; this protection will guard you from all evil.
