सर्वदा वा एष युक्तग्रावार्द्रपवित्रो वितताध्वर आहृतयज्ञक्रतुर्य उपहरति
At all times, he with the fitted pressing stone, the moist strainer, the extended sacrifice, brings forth the offering.
प्राजापत्यो वा एतस्य यज्ञो विततो य उपहरति
The sacrifice of Prajapati is extended for him who brings forth the offering.
प्रजापतेर्वा एष विक्रमान् अनुविक्रमते य उपहरति
He follows the steps of Prajapati, who brings forth the offering.
योऽतिथीनां स आहवनीयो यो वेश्मनि स गार्हपत्यो यस्मिन् पचन्ति स दक्षिणाग्निः
He who is among the guests is the āhavanīya fire; he who is in the house is the gārhapatya; in whom they cook is the dakṣiṇāgni.
इष्टं च वा एष पूर्तं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both the performed and the fulfilled, who eats before the guest eats.
पयश्च वा एष रसं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both milk and essence, who eats before the guest eats.
ऊर्जां च वा एष स्फातिं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both nourishment and growth, who eats before the guest eats.
प्रजां वा एष पशूंश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both offspring and cattle, who eats before the guest eats.
कीर्तिं वा एष यशश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both fame and renown, who eats before the guest eats.
श्रियं वा एष संविदं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He receives both prosperity and understanding, who eats before the guest eats.
एष वा अतिथिर्यच्छ्रोत्रियस्तस्मात्पूर्वो नाश्नीयात्
This guest, when he is learned in the Vedas, therefore one should not eat before him.
अशितावत्यतिथावश्नीयाद्यज्ञस्य सात्मत्वाय यज्ञस्याविच्छेदाय तद्व्रतम्
One should eat after the guest has eaten, for the integrity of the sacrifice, for the continuity of the sacrifice; this is the vow.
एतद्वा उ स्वादीयो यदधिगवं क्षीरं वा मांसं वा तदेव नाश्नीयात्
Indeed, that which is especially delicious, whether it be curds, milk, or meat, one should not eat that.
स य एवं विद्वान् क्षीरमुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदग्निष्टोमेनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers milk after pouring it out, obtains as much prosperity as one gains by performing the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice with great abundance; just so much does he obtain by this.
स य एवं विद्वान्त्सर्पिरुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदतिरात्रेणेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers clarified butter after pouring it out, obtains as much prosperity as one gains by performing the Atirātra sacrifice with great abundance; just so much does he obtain by this.
स य एवं विद्वान् मधूपसिच्योपहरति । यावद्सत्त्रसद्येनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers honey after pouring it out, obtains as much prosperity as one gains by performing the Sattrasatya sacrifice with great abundance; just so much does he obtain by this.
स य एवं विद्वान् मांसमुपसिच्योपहरति । यावद्द्वादशाहेनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers meat after pouring it out, obtains as much prosperity as one gains by performing the Dvādaśāha sacrifice with great abundance; just so much does he obtain by this.
स य एवं विद्वान् उदकमुपसिच्योपहरति । प्रजानां प्रजननाय गच्छति प्रतिष्ठां प्रियः प्रजानां भवति य एवं विद्वान् उपसिच्योपहरति
He who, knowing thus, offers water after pouring it out, goes towards the generation of offspring, attains a firm foundation, and becomes beloved among people; he who knows thus and offers after pouring out.
तस्मा उषा हिङ्कृणोति सविता प्र स्तौति । बृहस्पतिरूर्जयोद्गायति त्वष्टा पुष्ट्या प्रति हरति विश्वे देवा निधनम्
Therefore, Uṣas utters the hiṅ sound, Savitṛ praises, Bṛhaspati sings forth for strength, Tvaṣṭṛ brings forth for nourishment, and all the gods for the resting place.
निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
He who knows thus, for him the resting place becomes that of prosperity, offspring, and cattle.
तस्मा उद्यन्त्सूर्यो हिङ्कृणोति संगवः प्र स्तौति । मध्यन्दिन उद्गायत्यपराह्णः प्रति हरत्यस्तंयन् निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
Therefore, at sunrise the sun utters the hiṅ sound, at mid-morning he praises, at midday he sings forth, in the afternoon he brings forth, at sunset the resting place; the resting place becomes that of prosperity, offspring, and cattle for him who knows thus.
तस्मा अभ्रो भवन् हिङ्कृणोति स्तनयन् प्र स्तौति । विद्योतमानः प्रति हरति वर्षन्न् उद्गायत्युद्गृह्णन् निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
Therefore, the cloud utters the hiṅ sound, thundering it praises, flashing it brings forth, raining it sings forth, pouring out it takes up the resting place; the resting place becomes that of prosperity, offspring, and cattle for him who knows thus.
अतिथीन् प्रति पश्यति हिङ्कृणोत्यभि वदति प्र स्तौत्युदकं याचत्युद्गायति । उप हरति प्रति हरत्युच्छिष्टं निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
He looks towards guests, utters the hiṅ sound, greets, praises, asks for water, sings forth, offers, brings forth, and the leavings are the resting place; the resting place becomes that of prosperity, offspring, and cattle for him who knows thus.
9.7 प्रजापतिश्च परमेष्ठी च शृङ्गे इन्द्रः शिरो अग्निर्ललाटं यमः कृकाटम्
Prajāpati and Parameṣṭhin are the horns, Indra is the head, Agni the forehead, Yama the occiput.
सोमो राजा मस्तिष्को द्यौरुत्तरहनुः पृथिव्यधरहनुः
Soma the king is the brain, heaven is the upper jaw, earth the lower jaw.
विद्युज्जिह्वा मरुतो दन्ता रेवतीर्ग्रीवाः कृत्तिका स्कन्धा घर्मो वहः
Lightning is the tongue, the Maruts are the teeth, the Revatī stars are the necks, the Kṛttikās the shoulders, heat the back.
विश्वं वायुः स्वर्गो लोकः कृष्णद्रं विधरणी निवेष्यः
The all-pervading wind is the body, the heavenly world, the black spot is the support, the foundation.
श्येनः क्रोडोऽन्तरिक्षं पाजस्यं बृहस्पतिः ककुद्बृहतीः कीकसाः
The falcon is the hump, the intermediate space is the marrow, Bṛhaspati is the withers, the Bṛhatī and Kīkasā meters are the dewlap.
देवानां पत्नीः पृष्टय उपसदः पर्शवः
The wives of the gods are the backs, the Upasads are the sides, the ribs.
मित्रश्च वरुणश्चांसौ त्वष्टा चार्यमा च दोषणी महादेवो बाहू
Mitra and Varuṇa are the shoulders, Tvaṣṭṛ and Aryaman as well, the Doṣaṇī are the arms, Mahādeva is the arms.
