स्रुचा हस्तेन प्राणे यूपे स्रुक्कारेण वषट्कारेण
With the ladle in hand, with the vital breath, on the sacrificial post with the sacrificial implement, with the exclamation 'vaṣaṭ.'
एते वै प्रियाश्चाप्रियाश्च र्त्विजः स्वर्गं लोकं गमयन्ति यदतिथयः
These priests, both dear and not dear, lead the guests to the heavenly world.
स य एवं विद्वान् न द्विषन्न् अश्नीयान् न द्विषतोऽन्नमश्नीयान् न मीमांसितस्य न मीमांसमानस्य
He who knows thus should not eat in hatred, nor eat the food of one who hates, nor of one who is not examined, nor of one who is examining.
सर्वो वा एष जग्धपाप्मा यस्यान्नमश्नन्ति
Indeed, all the sin of eating is upon him whose food they eat.
सर्वो वा एसोऽजग्धपाप्मा यस्यान्नं नाश्नन्ति
Indeed, all the sin of eating is not upon him whose food they do not eat.
सर्वदा वा एष युक्तग्रावार्द्रपवित्रो वितताध्वर आहृतयज्ञक्रतुर्य उपहरति
At all times, he with the pressing stone ready, the moist purifier, the extended sacrifice, brings the offering for the one who has prepared the sacrifice.
प्राजापत्यो वा एतस्य यज्ञो विततो य उपहरति
Indeed, the sacrifice of him who brings the offering is extended from Prajāpati.
प्रजापतेर्वा एष विक्रमान् अनुविक्रमते य उपहरति
Indeed, he who brings the offering follows in the steps of Prajāpati.
योऽतिथीनां स आहवनीयो यो वेश्मनि स गार्हपत्यो यस्मिन् पचन्ति स दक्षिणाग्निः
He who is for the guests is the Āhavanīya fire; he who is in the house is the Gārhapatya; in whom they cook is the Dakṣiṇāgni.
{१६} इष्टं च वा एष पूर्तं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both the merit of sacrifice and of charitable works.
पयश्च वा एष रसं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both milk and essence.
ऊर्जां च वा एष स्फातिं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both nourishment and abundance.
प्रजां वा एष पशूंश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both offspring and cattle.
कीर्तिं वा एष यशश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both fame and renown.
श्रियं वा एष संविदं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both prosperity and understanding.
एष वा अतिथिर्यच्छ्रोत्रियस्तस्मात्पूर्वो नाश्नीयात्
This indeed is the guest, the learned Brahmin; therefore, one should not eat before him.
अशितावत्यतिथावश्नीयाद्यज्ञस्य सात्मत्वाय यज्ञस्याविछेदाय तद्व्रतम्
One should eat only after the guest has eaten, for the sake of the sacrifice's essence and its unbroken continuity; this is the rule.
एतद्वा उ स्वादीयो यदधिगवं क्षीरं वा मांसं वा तदेव नाश्नीयात्
Whatever is especially delicious, whether it be curds, milk, or meat, that indeed one should not eat before the guest.
{१७} स य एवं विद्वान् क्षीरमुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदग्निष्टोमेनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers milk with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
स य एवं विद्वान्त्सर्पिरुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदतिरात्रेणेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers clarified butter with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Atirātra sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
स य एवं विद्वान् मधूपसिच्योपहरति । यावद्सत्त्रसद्येनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers honey with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Sattrasatya sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
स य एवं विद्वान् मांसमुपसिच्योपहरति । यावद्द्वादशाहेनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers meat with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Dvādaśāha sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
स य एवं विद्वान् उदकमुपसिच्योपहरति । प्रजानां प्रजननाय गच्छति प्रतिष्ठां प्रियः प्रजानां भवति य एवं विद्वान् उपसिच्योपहरति
He who, knowing thus, offers water with the oblation—he proceeds to the generation of offspring, he becomes established, he becomes dear to offspring, who, knowing thus, offers with water.
निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
He who knows thus becomes the resting place of wealth, offspring, and cattle.
तस्मा उद्यन्त्सूर्यो हिङ्कृणोति संगवः प्र स्तौति । मध्यन्दिन उद्गायत्यपराह्णः प्रति हरत्यस्तंयन् निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
Therefore, when the sun rises, he utters the hiṅkāra; at mid-morning, he praises; at midday, he sings; in the afternoon, he recites; at sunset, he becomes the resting place. He who knows thus becomes the resting place of wealth, offspring, and cattle.
तस्मा अभ्रो भवन् हिङ्कृणोति स्तनयन् प्र स्तौति । विद्योतमानः प्रति हरति वर्षन्न् उद्गायत्युद्गृह्णन् निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
Therefore, when the cloud forms, it utters the hiṅkāra; thundering, it praises; flashing, it recites; raining, it sings; gathering, it becomes the resting place. He who knows thus becomes the resting place of wealth, offspring, and cattle.
अतिथीन् प्रति पश्यति हिङ्कृणोत्यभि वदति प्र स्तौत्युदकं याचत्युद्गायति । उप हरति प्रति हरत्युच्छिष्टं निधनम् । निधनं भूत्याः प्रजायाः पशूनां भवति य एवं वेद
He looks upon the guests, makes the hiṅ sound, addresses them, praises them, asks for water, sings forth; he brings, he returns, he removes the leavings, the residue. The residue becomes the wealth of prosperity, offspring, and cattle for him who knows thus.
{१९} यत्क्षत्तारं ह्वयत्या श्रावयत्येव तत्
Whatever steward he calls, he indeed causes that one to hear.
यत्प्रतिशृणोति प्रत्याश्रावयत्येव तत्
Whatever he listens to, he indeed causes that to be heard in return.
यत्परिवेष्टारः पात्रहस्ताः पूर्वे चापरे च प्रपद्यन्ते चमसाध्वर्यव एव ते
Whatever servers with vessels in hand, both former and later, approach, they are indeed the ladles of the Adhvaryu.
