यत्पुरा परिवेषात्स्वादमाहरन्ति पुरोडाशावेव तौ
What they bring before the meal for tasting, those are indeed puroḍāśa offerings.
यदशनकृतं ह्वयन्ति हविष्कृतमेव तद्ध्वयन्ति
When they call for what is prepared for eating, they are indeed calling for what is prepared as an offering.
ये व्रीहयो यवा निरुप्यन्तेऽंशव एव ते
The rice and barley that are measured out, those are indeed the portions.
यान्युलूखलमुसलानि ग्रावाण एव ते
The mortars and pestles, those are indeed the pressing stones.
शूर्पं पवित्रं तुषा ऋजीषाभिषवणीरापः
The winnowing basket is the purifier, the husks are the embers, the sieves are the waters.
स्रुग्दर्विर्नेक्षणमायवनं द्रोणकलशाः कुम्भ्यो वायव्यानि पात्राणीयमेव कृष्णाजिनम्
The ladle, the spoon, the vessel for seeing, the strainer, the troughs, the jars, the wind-related vessels—these are indeed the black antelope skin.
{१५} यजमानब्राह्मणं वा एतदतिथिपतिः कुरुते यदाहार्याणि प्रेक्षत इदं भूया३ इदा३ इति
When one looks at the food to be brought, thinking, 'May this be more, may this be more,' the host thereby makes the sacrificer or the priest his honored guest.
यदाह भूय उद्धरेति प्राणमेव तेन वर्षीयांसं कुरुते
When he says, 'Bring more,' by that he makes the vital breath greater.
उप हरति हवींष्या सादयति
He brings near the offerings and makes them pleasing.
तेषामासन्नानामतिथिरात्मन् जुहोति
Of those who are present, the guest offers on his own behalf.
स्रुचा हस्तेन प्राणे यूपे स्रुक्कारेण वषट्कारेण
With the ladle in hand, with the vital breath, on the sacrificial post with the sacrificial implement, with the exclamation 'vaṣaṭ.'
एते वै प्रियाश्चाप्रियाश्च र्त्विजः स्वर्गं लोकं गमयन्ति यदतिथयः
These priests, both dear and not dear, lead the guests to the heavenly world.
स य एवं विद्वान् न द्विषन्न् अश्नीयान् न द्विषतोऽन्नमश्नीयान् न मीमांसितस्य न मीमांसमानस्य
He who knows thus should not eat in hatred, nor eat the food of one who hates, nor of one who is not examined, nor of one who is examining.
सर्वो वा एष जग्धपाप्मा यस्यान्नमश्नन्ति
Indeed, all the sin of eating is upon him whose food they eat.
सर्वो वा एसोऽजग्धपाप्मा यस्यान्नं नाश्नन्ति
Indeed, all the sin of eating is not upon him whose food they do not eat.
सर्वदा वा एष युक्तग्रावार्द्रपवित्रो वितताध्वर आहृतयज्ञक्रतुर्य उपहरति
At all times, he with the pressing stone ready, the moist purifier, the extended sacrifice, brings the offering for the one who has prepared the sacrifice.
प्राजापत्यो वा एतस्य यज्ञो विततो य उपहरति
Indeed, the sacrifice of him who brings the offering is extended from Prajāpati.
प्रजापतेर्वा एष विक्रमान् अनुविक्रमते य उपहरति
Indeed, he who brings the offering follows in the steps of Prajāpati.
योऽतिथीनां स आहवनीयो यो वेश्मनि स गार्हपत्यो यस्मिन् पचन्ति स दक्षिणाग्निः
He who is for the guests is the Āhavanīya fire; he who is in the house is the Gārhapatya; in whom they cook is the Dakṣiṇāgni.
{१६} इष्टं च वा एष पूर्तं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both the merit of sacrifice and of charitable works.
पयश्च वा एष रसं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both milk and essence.
ऊर्जां च वा एष स्फातिं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both nourishment and abundance.
प्रजां वा एष पशूंश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both offspring and cattle.
कीर्तिं वा एष यशश्च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both fame and renown.
श्रियं वा एष संविदं च गृहाणामश्नाति यः पूर्वोऽतिथेरश्नाति
He who eats before the guest eats takes to himself both prosperity and understanding.
एष वा अतिथिर्यच्छ्रोत्रियस्तस्मात्पूर्वो नाश्नीयात्
This indeed is the guest, the learned Brahmin; therefore, one should not eat before him.
अशितावत्यतिथावश्नीयाद्यज्ञस्य सात्मत्वाय यज्ञस्याविछेदाय तद्व्रतम्
One should eat only after the guest has eaten, for the sake of the sacrifice's essence and its unbroken continuity; this is the rule.
एतद्वा उ स्वादीयो यदधिगवं क्षीरं वा मांसं वा तदेव नाश्नीयात्
Whatever is especially delicious, whether it be curds, milk, or meat, that indeed one should not eat before the guest.
{१७} स य एवं विद्वान् क्षीरमुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदग्निष्टोमेनेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers milk with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
स य एवं विद्वान्त्सर्पिरुपसिच्योपहरति । यावदतिरात्रेणेष्ट्वा सुसमृद्धेनावरुन्द्धे तावदेनेनाव रुन्द्धे
He who, knowing thus, offers clarified butter with the oblation—whatever prosperity is gained by performing the Atirātra sacrifice, he obtains just as much by this offering.
