अन्तरा द्यां च पृथिवीं च यद्व्यचस्तेन शालां प्रति गृह्णामि त इमाम् । यदन्तरिक्षं रजसो विमानं तत्कृण्वेऽहमुदरं शेवधिभ्यः । तेन शालां प्रति गृह्णामि तस्मै
With that which stretches between heaven and earth, I take hold of this shelter; that which is the expanse of the atmosphere, the domain of dust, I make as a womb for the auspicious ones. With this, I take hold of the shelter for him.
ऊर्जस्वती पयस्वती पृथिव्यां निमिता मिता । विश्वान्नं बिभ्रती शाले मा हिंसीः प्रतिगृह्णतः
Rich in nourishment, abundant in milk, established upon the earth, measured and bounded, bearing all food—O shelter, do not harm the one who receives you.
तृणैरावृता पलदान् वसाना रात्रीव शाला जगतो निवेशनी । मिता पृथिव्यां तिष्ठसि हस्तिनीव पद्वती
Covered with grass, bearing the fruits, clothed, like the night, the shelter is the resting place of the world. Measured, you stand upon the earth, like an elephant with footprints.
इटस्य ते वि चृताम्यपिनद्धमपोर्णुवन् । वरुणेन समुब्जितां मित्रः प्रातर्व्युब्जतु
I loosen what is bound of yours, O iṭa, and fill it up. May Mitra release what Varuna has bound, in the morning.
ब्रह्मणा शालां निमितां कविभिर्निमितां मिताम् । इन्द्राग्नी रक्षतां शालाममृतौ सोम्यं सदः
By Brahman the shelter is established, by the sages it is established and measured. May Indra and Agni protect the shelter, the immortal, the seat of Soma.
कुलायेऽधि कुलायं कोशे कोशः समुब्जितः । तत्र मर्तो वि जायते यस्माद्विश्वं प्रजायते
Within the nest upon the nest, within the vessel the vessel is placed. There, a mortal is born, from whom all creation arises.
{७} या द्विपक्षा चतुष्पक्षा षट्पक्षा या निमीयते । अष्टापक्षां दशपक्षां शालां मानस्य पत्नीमग्निर्गर्भ इवा शये
Those with two wings, four wings, six wings, those that are measured, eight-winged, ten-winged—O shelter, wife of the mind, you lie as the embryo of fire.
प्रतीचीं त्वा प्रतीचीनः शाले प्रैम्यहिंसतीम् । अग्निर्ह्यन्तरापश्च ऋतस्य प्रथमा द्वाः
Facing west, I approach you, O shelter, unharmed. Fire and the inner waters are the first doors of truth.
इमा आपः प्र भराम्ययक्ष्मा यक्ष्मनाशनीः । गृहान् उप प्र सीदाम्यमृतेन सहाग्निना
I bring forth these waters, free from disease, destroyers of sickness. I enter the houses together with immortality and with Agni.
मा नः पाशं प्रति मुचो गुरुर्भारो लघुर्भव । वधूमिव त्वा शाले यत्रकामं भरामसि
Do not bind us with a heavy burden; let it be light. Like a bride, O shelter, wherever we wish, we carry you.
प्राच्या दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the eastern direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
दक्षिणाया दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the southern direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
प्रतीच्या दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the western direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
उदीच्या दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the northern direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
ध्रुवाया दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the fixed direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
ऊर्ध्वाया दिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To the upward direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
दिशोदिशः शालाया नमो महिम्ने स्वाहा देवेभ्यः स्वाह्येभ्यः
To every direction of the shelter, homage to its greatness; svāhā to the gods, svāhā to the divine ones.
साहस्रस्त्वेष ऋषभः पयस्वान् विश्वा रूपाणि वक्षणासु बिभ्रत्। भद्रं दात्रे यजमानाय शीक्षन् बार्हस्पत्य उस्रियस्तन्तुमातान्
A thousandfold, powerful, the bull, rich in milk, bearing all forms within his breasts; granting good to the giver, instructing the sacrificer, the offspring of Brihaspati, weaving the thread.
अपां यो अग्रे प्रतिमा बभूव प्रभूः सर्वस्मै पृथिवीव देवी । पिता वत्सानां पतिरघ्न्यानां साहस्रे पोषे अपि नः कृणोतु
He who was foremost among the waters, the mighty one, who became an image for all, like the divine earth—may he, the father of calves, the lord of the cows, grant us abundance a thousandfold.
पुमान् अन्तर्वान्त्स्थविरः पयस्वान् वसोः कबन्धमृषभो बिभर्ति । तमिन्द्राय पथिभिर्देवयानैर्हुतमग्निर्वहतु जातवेदाः
The strong bull, ancient and full of milk, bears the body of the treasure; let Agni, the knower of all births, carry him, offered with paths fit for the gods, to Indra.
पिता वत्सानां पतिरघ्न्यानामथो पिता महतां गर्गराणाम् । वत्सो जरायु प्रतिधुक्पीयूष आमिक्षा घृतं तद्वस्य रेतः
He is the father of calves, the lord of the cows, and also the father of the great roaring ones; the calf, wrapped in the membrane, yields nourishing milk—this is the butter, the seed of the treasure.
देवानां भाग उपनाह एषोऽपां रस ओषधीनां घृतस्य । सोमस्य भक्षमवृणीत शक्रो बृहन्न् अद्रिरभवद्यच्छरीरम्
This one brings near the share for the gods, the essence of the waters, of plants, and of butter; Shakra chose the food of Soma, and the great mountain became his body.
सोमेन पूर्णं कलशं बिभर्षि त्वष्टा रूपाणां जनिता पशूनाम् । शिवास्ते सन्तु प्रजन्व इह या इमा न्यस्मभ्यं स्वधिते यच्छ या अमूः
You bear the vessel filled with Soma; Tvaṣṭṛ is the creator of forms and of cattle; may those here who are fruitful be auspicious for you—grant to us those who are here, and those who are there.
आज्यं बिभर्ति घृतमस्य रेतः साहस्रः पोषस्तमु यज्ञमाहुः । इन्द्रस्य रूपमृषभो वसानः सो अस्मान् देवाः शिव ऐतु दत्तः
He bears clarified butter, his seed is ghee, his abundance is a thousandfold—him they call the sacrifice; the bull, clothed in fat, is the form of Indra—may the gods, being gracious, send him to us as a gift.
इन्द्रस्यौजो वरुणस्य बाहू अश्विनोरंसौ मरुतामियं ककुत्। बृहस्पतिं संभृतमेतमाहुर्ये धीरासः कवयो ये मनीषिणः
His strength is Indra's, his arms are Varuṇa's, his shoulders are the Aśvins', his hump is of the Maruts; the wise, the poets, the thinkers, say this is the gathered form of Bṛhaspati.
दैवीर्विशः पयस्वान् आ तनोषि त्वामिन्द्रं त्वां सरस्वन्तमाहुः । सहस्रं स एकमुखा ददाति यो ब्राह्मण ऋषभमाजुहोति
You extend yourself with the milky essence of the divine hosts; they call you Indra, they call you Sarasvat; he who offers the bull to the Brahmin gives a thousand with a single mouth.
बृहस्पतिः सविता ते वयो दधौ त्वष्टुर्वायोः पर्यात्मा त आभृतः । अन्तरिक्षे मनसा त्वा जुहोमि बर्हिष्टे द्यावापृथिवी उभे स्ताम्
Bṛhaspati, Savitṛ, have given you wings; the vital breath of Tvaṣṭṛ surrounds you; with my mind I offer you in the midspace—may both heaven and earth stand firm on the sacred grass.
{९} य इन्द्र इव देवेषु गोष्वेति विवावदत्। तस्य ऋषभस्याङ्गानि ब्रह्मा सं स्तौतु भद्रया
He who, among the gods and among the cows, speaks out like Indra—may the Brahman praise the limbs of that bull with a blessing.
पार्श्वे आस्तामनुमत्या भगस्यास्तामनूवृजौ । अष्ठीवन्तावब्रवीन् मित्रो ममैतौ केवलाविति
Let the sides be of Anumati, the thighs of Bhaga; Mitra declared, 'These two, having bones, are mine alone.'
भसदासीदादित्यानां श्रोणी आस्तां बृहस्पतेः । पुच्छं वातस्य देवस्य तेन धूनोत्योषधीः
Let the buttocks be of the Ādityas, the hips of Bṛhaspati; the tail is of Vāta, the god—by it he shakes the plants.
