यावती द्यावापृथिवी वरिम्णा यावदापः सिष्यदुर्यावदग्निः । ततस्त्वमसि ज्यायान् विश्वहा महांस्तस्मै ते काम नम इत्कृणोमि
As vast as heaven and earth in their extent, as far as the waters spread, as far as Agni reaches, therefore you are greater, all-conquering, mighty; to you, O desire, I make this reverent salutation.
{४} यावतीर्दिशः प्रदिशो विषूचीर्यावतीराशा अभिचक्षणा दिवः । ततस्त्वमसि ज्यायान् विश्वहा महांस्तस्मै ते काम नम इत्कृणोमि
As many directions, intermediate directions, and crossways as there are, as many shining regions as are seen in the sky, therefore you are greater, all-conquering, mighty; to you, O desire, I make this reverent salutation.
यावतीर्भृङ्गा जत्वः कुरूरवो यावतीर्वघा वृक्षसर्प्यो बभूवुः । ततस्त्वमसि ज्यायान् विश्वहा महांस्तस्मै ते काम नम इत्कृणोमि
As numerous as the beetles, the insects, the kurūras, and as many as the tree-serpents that have come to be—greater than all these are you, O Kāma, destroyer of all, mighty one; to you, O Kāma, I bow in homage.
ज्यायान् निमिषतोऽसि तिष्ठतो ज्यायान्त्समुद्रादसि काम मन्यो । ततस्त्वमसि ज्यायान् विश्वहा महांस्तस्मै ते काम नम इत्कृणोमि
You are greater than one who blinks, greater than one who stands still, greater than the ocean, O Kāma, O wrath; greater than all these are you, O Kāma, destroyer of all, mighty one; to you, O Kāma, I bow in homage.
न वै वातश्चन काममाप्नोति नाग्निः सूर्यो नोत चन्द्रमाः । ततस्त्वमसि ज्यायान् विश्वहा महांस्तस्मै ते काम नम इत्कृणोमि
Not even the wind attains to Kāma, nor fire, nor the sun, nor the moon; greater than all these are you, O Kāma, destroyer of all, mighty one; to you, O Kāma, I bow in homage.
यास्ते शिवास्तन्वः काम भद्रा याभिः सत्यं भवति यद्वृणिषे । ताभिष्ट्वमस्मामभिसंविशस्वान्यत्र पापीरप वेशया धियः
Those auspicious, gracious forms of yours, O Kāma, by which truth comes to be when you choose—by those, come and enter among us; elsewhere, drive away the thoughts of the wicked.
उपमितां प्रतिमितामथो परिमितामुत । शालाया विश्ववाराया नद्धानि वि चृतामसि
Measured, counter-measured, and also limited—within the all-encompassing hall, what is bound, we loosen and set free.
यत्ते नद्धं विश्ववारे पाशो ग्रन्थिश्च यः कृतः । बृहस्पतिरिवाहं बलं वाचा वि स्रंसयामि तत्
Whatever is bound in you, O all-encompassing hall, the snare, the knot that has been made—like Bṛhaspati with speech, I loosen that force.
आ ययाम सं बबर्ह ग्रन्थींश्चकार ते दृढान् । परूंषि विद्वां छस्तेवेन्द्रेण वि चृतामसि
We have come, we have strengthened, we have made your knots firm; knowing the obstacles, like Indra with his weapon, we loosen what is bound.
वंशानां ते नहनानां प्राणाहस्य तृणस्य च । पक्षाणां विश्ववारे ते नद्धानि वि चृतामसि
Of your bamboos, your fastenings, the breath of the living, and the grass; of the wings, O all-encompassing hall, what is bound, we loosen and set free.
संदंशानां पलदानां परिष्वञ्जल्यस्य च । इदं मानस्य पत्न्या नद्धानि वि चृतामसि
Of the pincers, the plates, and the clasp of the embrace—these bindings of the mind’s wife, we loosen and set free.
यानि तेऽन्तः शिक्यान्याबेधू रण्याय कम् । प्र ते तानि चृतामसि शिवा मानस्य पत्नी न उद्धिता तन्वे भव
Whatever is inside your baskets, whatever is pierced for the sake of pleasure—these things we loosen and set free; may the wife of the mind not be raised up against her own form.
हविर्धानमग्निशालं पत्नीनां सदनं सदः । सदो देवानामसि देवि शाले
The offering place, the fire hall, the seat of the wives, the assembly—O hall, you are the seat of the gods, O divine hall.
अक्षुमोपशं विततं सहस्राक्षं विषूवति । अवनद्धमभिहितं ब्रह्मणा वि चृतामसि
The axle, the yoke, the thousand-eyed, the crossbeam—what is bound, what is declared by the Brahman, we loosen and set free.
यस्त्वा शाले प्रतिगृह्णाति येन चासि मिता त्वम् । उभौ मानस्य पत्नि तौ जीवतां जरदष्टी
Whoever receives you, O hall, and by whom you are measured—may both, the mind’s wife, live long, growing old together.
अमुत्रैनमा गच्छताद्दृढा नद्धा परिष्कृता । यस्यास्ते विचृतामस्यङ्गमङ्गं परुष्परुः
May he not go to the other world; what is firmly bound, what is adorned—of whom we loosen and set free every limb, every joint.
{६} यस्त्वा शाले निमिमाय संजभार वनस्पतीन् । प्रजायै चक्रे त्वा शाले परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः
He who measured you, O hall, who joined together the trees—Prajāpati, the supreme lord, made you for the sake of offspring.
नमस्तस्मै नमो दात्रे शालापतये च कृण्मः । नमोऽग्नये प्रचरते पुरुषाय च ते नमः
Homage to him, homage to the giver, to the lord of the hall we offer; homage to Agni who moves, and to you, O person, our reverence.
गोभ्यो अश्वेभ्यो नमो यच्छालायां विजायते । विजावति प्रजावति वि ते पाशांश्चृतामसि
Homage to the cows, to the horses, and to whatever is born in the hall; in the hall rich in offspring, rich in progeny, we loosen your bonds.
अग्निमन्तश्छादयसि पुरुषान् पशुभिः सह । विजावति प्रजावति वि ते पाशांश्चृतामसि
You cover men possessing fire, together with cattle; in the hall rich in offspring, rich in progeny, we loosen your bonds.
अन्तरा द्यां च पृथिवीं च यद्व्यचस्तेन शालां प्रति गृह्णामि त इमाम् । यदन्तरिक्षं रजसो विमानं तत्कृण्वेऽहमुदरं शेवधिभ्यः । तेन शालां प्रति गृह्णामि तस्मै
With that which stretches between heaven and earth, I take hold of this shelter; that which is the expanse of the atmosphere, the domain of dust, I make as a womb for the auspicious ones. With this, I take hold of the shelter for him.
ऊर्जस्वती पयस्वती पृथिव्यां निमिता मिता । विश्वान्नं बिभ्रती शाले मा हिंसीः प्रतिगृह्णतः
Rich in nourishment, abundant in milk, established upon the earth, measured and bounded, bearing all food—O shelter, do not harm the one who receives you.
तृणैरावृता पलदान् वसाना रात्रीव शाला जगतो निवेशनी । मिता पृथिव्यां तिष्ठसि हस्तिनीव पद्वती
Covered with grass, bearing the fruits, clothed, like the night, the shelter is the resting place of the world. Measured, you stand upon the earth, like an elephant with footprints.
इटस्य ते वि चृताम्यपिनद्धमपोर्णुवन् । वरुणेन समुब्जितां मित्रः प्रातर्व्युब्जतु
I loosen what is bound of yours, O iṭa, and fill it up. May Mitra release what Varuna has bound, in the morning.
ब्रह्मणा शालां निमितां कविभिर्निमितां मिताम् । इन्द्राग्नी रक्षतां शालाममृतौ सोम्यं सदः
By Brahman the shelter is established, by the sages it is established and measured. May Indra and Agni protect the shelter, the immortal, the seat of Soma.
कुलायेऽधि कुलायं कोशे कोशः समुब्जितः । तत्र मर्तो वि जायते यस्माद्विश्वं प्रजायते
Within the nest upon the nest, within the vessel the vessel is placed. There, a mortal is born, from whom all creation arises.
{७} या द्विपक्षा चतुष्पक्षा षट्पक्षा या निमीयते । अष्टापक्षां दशपक्षां शालां मानस्य पत्नीमग्निर्गर्भ इवा शये
Those with two wings, four wings, six wings, those that are measured, eight-winged, ten-winged—O shelter, wife of the mind, you lie as the embryo of fire.
प्रतीचीं त्वा प्रतीचीनः शाले प्रैम्यहिंसतीम् । अग्निर्ह्यन्तरापश्च ऋतस्य प्रथमा द्वाः
Facing west, I approach you, O shelter, unharmed. Fire and the inner waters are the first doors of truth.
इमा आपः प्र भराम्ययक्ष्मा यक्ष्मनाशनीः । गृहान् उप प्र सीदाम्यमृतेन सहाग्निना
I bring forth these waters, free from disease, destroyers of sickness. I enter the houses together with immortality and with Agni.
मा नः पाशं प्रति मुचो गुरुर्भारो लघुर्भव । वधूमिव त्वा शाले यत्रकामं भरामसि
Do not bind us with a heavy burden; let it be light. Like a bride, O shelter, wherever we wish, we carry you.
