सोदक्रामत्सा पितॄन् आगच्छत्तां पितर उपाह्वयन्त स्वध एहीति । तस्या यमो राजा वत्स आसीद्रजतपात्रं पात्रम् । तामन्तको मार्त्यवोऽधोक्तां स्वधामेवाधोक्। तां स्वधां पितर उप जीवन्त्युपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to the ancestors; the ancestors called to her, 'Come, O Svadha!' For her, King Yama was the calf, and the vessel was a silver pot. Antaka, the son of Mrityu, milked her below, and only Svadha was milked out. The ancestors live by that Svadha; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of Svadha for sustenance.
सोदक्रामत्सा मनुष्यान् आगच्छत्तां मनुष्या उपाह्वयन्तेरावत्येहीति । तस्या मनुर्वैवस्वतो वत्स आसीत्पृथिवी पात्रम् । तां पृथी वैन्योऽधोक्तां कृषिं च सस्यं चाधोक्। ते स्वधां कृषिं च सस्यं च मनुष्या उप जीवन्ति कृष्टराधिरुपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to humans; the humans called to her, 'Come, O abundance!' For her, Manu Vaivasvata was the calf, and the vessel was the earth. Prithu Vainya milked her below, and both agriculture and crops were milked out. Humans live by Svadha, agriculture, and crops; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of agricultural prosperity for sustenance.
सोदक्रामत्सा सप्तऋषीन् आगच्छत्तां सप्तऋषय उपाह्वयन्त ब्रह्मण्वत्येहीति । तस्याः सोमो राजा वत्स आसीच्छन्दः पात्रम् । तां बृहस्पतिराङ्गिरसोऽधोक्तां ब्रह्म च तपश्चाधोक्। तद्ब्रह्म च तपश्च सप्तऋषय उप जीवन्ति ब्रह्मवर्चस्युपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to the Seven Sages; the Seven Sages called to her, 'Come, O sacred knowledge!' For her, King Soma was the calf, and the vessel was the meter. Brihaspati Angirasa milked her below, and both sacred knowledge and austerity were milked out. The Seven Sages live by sacred knowledge and austerity; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of Brahmanic splendor for sustenance.
सोदक्रामत्सा देवान् आगच्छत्तां देवा उपाह्वयन्तोर्ज एहीति । तस्या इन्द्रो वत्स आसीच्चमसः पात्रम् । तां देवः सविताधोक्तामूर्जामेवाधोक्। तामूर्जां देवा उप जीवन्त्युपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to the gods; the gods called to her, 'Come, O strength!' For her, Indra was the calf, and the vessel was the ladle. The god Savitar milked her below, and only strength was milked out. The gods live by that strength; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of strength for sustenance.
सोदक्रामत्सा गन्धर्वाप्सरस आगच्छत्तां गन्धर्वाप्सरस उपाह्वयन्त पुण्यगन्ध एहीति । तस्याश्चित्ररथः सौर्यवर्चसो वत्स आसीत्पुष्करपर्णं पात्रम् । तां वसुरुचिः सौर्यवर्चसोऽधोक्तां पुण्यमेव गन्धमधोक्। तं पुण्यं गन्धं गन्धर्वाप्सरस उप जीवन्ति पुण्यगन्धिरुपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to the Gandharvas and Apsarases; the Gandharvas and Apsarases called to her, 'Come, O fragrant one!' For her, Citraratha Sauryavarcasas was the calf, and the vessel was a blue lotus leaf. Vasuruci Sauryavarcasas milked her below, and only pure fragrance was milked out. The Gandharvas and Apsarases live by that pure fragrance; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of pure fragrance for sustenance.
सोदक्रामत्सेतरजनान् आगच्छत्तामितरजना उपाह्वयन्त तिरोध एहीति । तस्याः कुबेरो वैश्रवणो वत्स आसीदामपात्रं पात्रम् । तां रजतनाभिः कबेरकोऽधोक्तां तिरोधामेवाधोक्। तां तिरोधामतिरजना पितर उप जीवन्ति तिरो धत्ते सर्वं पाप्मानमुपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to other beings; the other beings called to her, 'Come, O concealment!' For her, Kubera Vaisravana was the calf, and the vessel was a noose. The one with silver spokes, Kuberaka, milked her below, and only concealment was milked out. The other beings and ancestors live by that concealment; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of concealment for sustenance, and all evil is held back.
सोदक्रामत्सा सर्पान् आगच्छत्तां सर्पा उपाह्वयन्त विषवत्येहीति । तस्यास्तक्षको वैशालेयो वत्स आसीदलाबुपात्रं पात्रम् । तां धृतराष्ट्र ऐरावतोऽधोक्तां विषमेवाधोक्। तद्विषं सर्पा उप जीवन्त्युपजीवनीयो भवति य एवं वेद
She departed from there and came to the serpents; the serpents called to her, 'Come, O poison!' For her, Takshaka Vaishalya was the calf, and the vessel was a bottle-gourd. Dhritarashtra Airavata milked her below, and only poison was milked out. The serpents live by that poison; whoever knows thus becomes a possessor of poison for sustenance.
दिवस्पृथिव्या अन्तरिक्षात्समुद्रादग्नेर्वातान् मधुकशा हि जज्ञे । तां चायित्वामृतं वसानां हृद्भिः प्रजाः प्रति नन्दन्ति सर्वाः
From heaven, earth, the atmosphere, the ocean, fire, and the winds, the honey-reed was born. Clothed in immortality, all beings rejoice in her with their hearts.
महत्पयो विश्वरूपमस्याः समुद्रस्य त्वोत रेत आहुः । यत ऐति मधुकशा रराणा तत्प्राणस्तदमृतं निविष्टम्
Great is the milk of this ocean, of all forms; they say that its seed is also there. From where the honey-reed, bearing abundance, comes forth, that is breath, that is the immortal established within.
पश्यन्त्यस्याश्चरितं पृथिव्यां पृथङ्नरो बहुधा मीमांसमानाः । अग्नेर्वातान् मधुकशा हि जज्ञे मरुतामुग्रा नप्तिः
They see her activity on earth, men examining in many ways, each separately. The honey-reed was indeed born from fire and the winds, the mighty offspring of the Maruts.
मातादित्यानां दुहिता वसूनां प्राणः प्रजानाममृतस्य नाभिः । हिरण्यवर्णा मधुकशा घृताची महान् भर्गश्चरति मर्त्येषु
Mother of the Adityas, daughter of the Vasus, breath of beings, navel of immortality, golden-hued, honey-reed, clothed in clarified butter, the great radiance moves among mortals.
मधोः कशामजनयन्त देवास्तस्या गर्भो अभवद्विश्वरूपः । तं जातं तरुणं पिपर्ति माता स जातो विश्वा भुवना वि चष्टे
The gods generated the honey-reed from honey; her embryo became of all forms. The mother nourishes the young one when born, and, being born, he beholds all the worlds.
कस्तं प्र वेद क उ तं चिकेत यो अस्या हृदः कलशः सोमधानो अक्षितः । ब्रह्मा सुमेधाः सो अस्मिन् मदेत
Who truly knows him, who perceives him, whose heart’s vessel, filled with Soma, is unbroken? The wise Brahman, possessing insight, should rejoice in him.
स तौ प्र वेद स उ तौ चिकेत यावस्याः स्तनौ सहस्रधारावक्षितौ । ऊर्जं दुहाते अनपस्फुरन्तौ
He truly knows them, he perceives them, whose two breasts, with a thousand streams, are unbroken. They yield nourishment, never failing.
हिङ्करिक्रती बृहती वयोधा उच्चैर्घोषाभ्येति या व्रतम् । त्रीन् घर्मान् अभि वावशाना मिमाति मायुं पयते पयोभिः
Resounding, mighty, bestowing strength, with loud voice she approaches, she who is vow-bound. Having measured out three libations, she extends life, she nourishes with her milks.
यामापीनामुपसीदन्त्यापः शाक्वरा वृषभा ये स्वराजः । ते वर्षन्ति ते वर्षयन्ति तद्विदे काममूर्जमापः
The waters approach her swelling, the Shakvaris, the bulls who are self-luminous. They rain, they cause rain; whoever knows this, the waters fulfill desire and nourishment.
स्तनयित्नुस्ते वाक्प्रजापते वृषा शुष्मं क्षिपसि भूम्यामधि । अग्नेर्वातान् मधुकशा हि जज्ञे मरुतामुग्रा नप्तिः
Your thunder is speech, O Lord of Creatures; as a bull, you hurl your might upon the earth. From Agni and the winds, the honey-tongued one was born, the fierce offspring of the Maruts.
{१} यथा सोमः प्रातःसवने अश्विनोर्भवति प्रियः । एवा मे अश्विना वर्च आत्मनि ध्रियताम्
As Soma is dear to the Aśvins at the morning pressing, so may brilliance be established in me by you, O Aśvins.
यथा सोमो द्वितीये सवन इन्द्राग्न्योर्भवति प्रियः । एवा म इन्द्राग्नी वर्च आत्मनि ध्रियताम्
As Soma is dear to Indra and Agni at the second pressing, so may brilliance be established in me by you, O Indra and Agni.
यथा सोमस्तृतीये सवन ऋभूणां भवति प्रियः । एवा म ऋभवो वर्च आत्मनि ध्रियताम्
As Soma is dear to the Ṛbhus at the third pressing, so may brilliance be established in me by you, O Ṛbhus.
मधु जनिषीय मधु वंसिषीय । पयस्वान् अग्न आगमं तं मा सं सृज वर्चसा
May I be born sweet, may I become sweet; may I, rich in milk, approach Agni—let him unite me with brilliance.
सं माग्ने वर्चसा सृज सं प्रजया समायुषा । विद्युर्मे अस्य देवा इन्द्रो विद्यात्सह ऋषिभिः
Unite me, O Agni, with brilliance, with offspring, with long life. May the gods know this for me; may Indra know it together with the seers.
यथा मधु मधुकृतः संभरन्ति मधावधि । एवा मे अश्विना वर्च आत्मनि ध्रियताम्
As the honey-makers gather honey in abundance, so may brilliance be established in me by you, O Aśvins.
यथा मक्षाः इदं मधु न्यञ्जन्ति मधावधि । एवा मे अश्विना वर्चस्तेजो बलमोजश्च ध्रियताम्
As the bees deposit this honey in abundance, so may brilliance, radiance, strength, and vigor be established in me by you, O Aśvins.
यद्गिरिषु पर्वतेषु गोष्वश्वेषु यन् मधु । सुरायां सिच्यमानायां यत्तत्र मधु तन् मयि
Whatever honey is in the hills, in the mountains, among cows and horses, in the flowing surā—may all that honey be in me.
अश्विना सारघेण मा मधुनाङ्क्तं शुभस्पती । यथा वर्चस्वतीं वाचमावदानि जनामनु
O Aśvins, anoint me with the essence of honey, O lords of beauty, so that I may speak words full of brilliance among people.
स्तनयित्नुस्ते वाक्प्रजापते वृषा शुष्मं क्षिपसि भूम्यां दिवि । तां पशव उप जीवन्ति सर्वे तेनो सेषमूर्जं पिपर्ति
Your thunder is speech, O Lord of Creatures; as a bull, you hurl your might upon earth and heaven. All the cattle live by it; with that, fill me with the remainder of strength.
पृथिवी दण्डोऽन्तरिक्षं गर्भो द्यौः कशा विद्युत्प्रकशो हिरण्ययो बिन्दुः
The earth is the staff, the atmosphere is the womb, the sky is the lash, lightning is the golden light, the drop.
यो वै कशायाः सप्त मधूनि वेद मधुमान् भवति । ब्राह्मणश्च राजा च धेनुश्चानड्वांश्च व्रीहिश्च यवश्च मधु सप्तमम्
Whoever knows the seven kinds of honey of the lash becomes honey-filled: the priest, the king, the cow, the goat, rice, barley, and honey as the seventh.
मधुमान् भवति मधुमदस्याहार्यं भवति । मधुमतो लोकान् जयति य एवं वेद
He becomes honey-filled; his food becomes honey-filled. He conquers the worlds of honey, whoever knows thus.
