वर्म मे द्यावापृथिवी वर्माहर्वर्म सूर्यः । वर्म म इन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च वर्म धाता दधातु मे
Heaven and earth are my armor, the sun is my armor, Indra and Agni are my armor, let Dhātṛ establish armor for me.
ऐन्द्राग्नं वर्म बहुलं यदुग्रं विश्वे देवा नातिविध्यन्ति सर्वे । तन् मे तन्वं त्रायतां सर्वतो बृहदायुष्मां जरदष्टिर्यथासानि
The Indra-Agni armor, abundant and fierce, which all the gods cannot pierce—may that protect my body everywhere, granting long life and vigor as it always has.
आ मारुक्षद्देवमणिर्मह्या अरिष्टतातये । इमं मेथिमभिसंविशध्वं तनूपानं त्रिवरूथमोजसे
May the divine gem of the gods, shining forth, grant us safety from harm; approach this woman together, for strength, with the threefold protection of the body.
अस्मिन्न् इन्द्रो नि दधातु नृम्णमिमं देवासो अभिसंविशध्वम् । दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदायायुष्मान् जरदष्टिर्यथासत्
May Indra establish manliness in this one; O gods, come together for her; may she live a long life, a hundred autumns, full of years, growing old with teeth intact.
यौ ते मातोन्ममार्ज जातायाः पतिवेदनौ । दुर्णामा तत्र मा गृधदलिंश उत वत्सपः
Whatever you, O mother, have wiped away from the newborn, the signs of birth—let no evil name cling there, neither from the slime nor from the afterbirth.
पलालानुपलालौ शर्कुं कोकं मलिम्लुचं पलीजकम् । आश्रेषं वव्रिवाससमृक्षग्रीवं प्रमीलिनम्
Straw, chaff, husk, the shell, the sticky residue, the membrane, the covering, the wrinkled skin, the neck of the placenta, the one who closes the eyes—
मा सं वृतो मोप सृप ऊरू माव सृपोऽन्तरा । कृणोम्यस्यै भेषजं बजं दुर्णामचातनम्
Let none of these surround you or approach you; let them not touch your thighs or come between; I make for her a remedy, a charm to drive away evil names.
दुर्णामा च सुनामा चोभा सम्वृतमिच्छतः । अरायान् अप हन्मः सुनामा स्त्रैणमिच्छताम्
Both the evil name and the good name, whichever they seek to attach, we drive away the hostile ones; let the good name be for those who desire a husband.
यः कृष्णः केश्यसुर स्तम्बज उत तुण्डिकः । अरायान् अस्या मुष्काभ्यां भंससोऽप हन्मसि
Whoever is black, hairy, a demon, a stump-dweller, or a beak-nosed one—those enemies, by her testicles and mouth, we drive away.
अनुजिघ्रं प्रमृशन्तं क्रव्यादमुत रेरिहम् । अरायां छ्वकिष्किणो बजः पिङ्गो अनीनशत्
The one who sniffs, who touches, who eats flesh, or who licks—those hostile ones, the barking ones, the yellow ones, the toothless, we drive away.
यस्त्वा स्वप्ने निपद्यते भ्राता भूत्वा पितेव च । बजस्तान्त्सहतामितः क्लीबरूपांस्तिरीटिनः
Whoever lies with you in a dream, as a brother or as a father, let the charm endure against them—those impotent, those with crests.
यस्त्वा स्वपन्तीं त्सरति यस्त्वा दिप्सति जाग्रतीम् । छायामिव प्र तान्त्सूर्यः परिक्रामन्न् अनीनशत्
Whoever pursues you while you sleep, or desires you while you are awake—may the sun, moving around, drive them away like a shadow.
यः कृणोति मृतवत्सामवतोकामिमां स्त्रियम् । तमोषधे त्वं नाशयास्याः कमलमञ्जिवम्
Whoever makes this woman like one whose child has died, or like a widow—O herb, destroy that darkness, that withered, lifeless state in her.
ये शालाः परिनृत्यन्ति सायं गर्दभनादिनः । कुसूला ये च कुक्षिलाः ककुभाः करुमाः स्रिमाः । तान् ओषधे त्वं गन्धेन विषूचीनान् वि नाशय
Those who dance around the house in the evening, braying like donkeys; those who are hunchbacked, pot-bellied, crooked, dark, or lean—O herb, with your fragrance, destroy those who bring disease.
{१४} ये कुकुन्धाः कुकिरभाः कृत्तीर्दूर्शानि बिभ्रति । क्लीबा इव प्रनृत्यन्तो वने ये कुर्वते घोषं तान् इतो नाशयामसि
Those who are hunchbacked, crooked, wearing torn garments, who dance about like impotent men, making noise in the forest—we drive them away from here.
ये सूर्यं न तितिक्षन्त आतपन्तममुं दिवः । अरायान् बस्तवासिनो दुर्गन्धींल्लोहितास्यान् मककान् नाशयामसि
Those who cannot endure the sun shining in the sky, the hostile ones who dwell in goat-skins, foul-smelling, red-mouthed, and fly-like—we drive them away.
य आत्मानमतिमात्रमंस आधाय बिभ्रति । स्त्रीणां श्रोणिप्रतोदिन इन्द्र रक्षांसि नाशय
Those who carry excessive flesh upon themselves, who strike at the loins of women—O Indra, destroy those demons.
ये पूर्वे बध्वो यन्ति हस्ते शृङ्गानि बिभ्रतः । आपाकेस्थाः प्रहासिन स्तम्बे ये कुर्वते ज्योतिस्तान् इतो नाशयामसि
Those who, like the former ones, go about with horns in their hands, who dwell in the refuse, who laugh loudly, who make light in the stump—we drive them away from here.
येषां पश्चात्प्रपदानि पुरः पार्ष्णीः पुरो मुखा । खलजाः शकधूमजा उरुण्डा ये च मट्मटाः कुम्भमुष्का अयाशवः । तान् अस्या ब्रह्मणस्पते प्रतीबोधेन नाशय
Those whose feet are behind, heels in front, faces forward; the bald ones, the smoke-born, the swollen, the muttering, the pot-bellied, the iron-testicled, the gluttonous—O Brahmanaspati, destroy them with awareness for her.
पर्यस्ताक्षा अप्रचङ्कशा अस्त्रैणाः सन्तु पण्डगाः । अव भेषज पादय य इमां संविवृत्सत्यपतिः स्वपतिं स्त्रियम्
Let those with drooping eyes, the crippled, the impotent, be powerless; O remedy, cast down those who seek to separate this woman from her husband, her true lord.
उद्धर्षिणं मुनिकेशं जम्भयन्तं मरीमृशम् । उपेषन्तमुदुम्बलं तुण्डेलमुत शालुडम् । पदा प्र विध्य पार्ष्ण्या स्थालीं गौरिव स्पन्दना
Strike down the one who rises up, the wild-haired ascetic, the yawning, the one who touches impurities, who approaches the fig tree, the tufted bird, or the crested fowl; strike the vessel with your foot, with your heel, as a cow kicks the milk-pail.
यस्ते गर्भं प्रतिमृशाज्जातं वा मारयाति ते । पिङ्गस्तमुग्रधन्वा कृणोतु हृदयाविधम्
Whoever harms or destroys your embryo, whether already formed or just conceived, may the tawny, fierce-bowed one strike him with a blow to the heart.
ये अम्नो जतान् मारयन्ति सूतिका अनुशेरते । स्त्रीभागान् पिङ्गो गन्धर्वान् वातो अभ्रमिवाजतु
Those who kill the unborn, who lurk around the birthing woman, who seize the portions of women, the tawny Gandharvas—may the wind drive them away like a cloud.
परिसृष्टं धरयतु यद्धितं माव पादि तत्। गर्भं त उग्रौ रक्षतां भेषजौ नीविभार्यौ
Let what is scattered be held together, let what is beneficial not fall away; may the fierce twin healers guard your embryo.
{१५} पवीनसात्तङ्गल्वाच्छायकादुत नग्नकात्। प्रजायै पत्ये त्वा पिङ्गः परि पातु किमीदिनः
From the one with a broken penis, from the one with a mutilated head, from the naked one—may the tawny Kimīdin protect you for offspring and for your husband.
द्व्यास्याच्चतुरक्षात्पञ्चपदादनङ्गुरेः । वृन्तादभि प्रसर्पतः परि पाहि वरीवृतात्
From the two-mouthed, the four-eyed, the five-footed, the fingerless, from the one creeping forth from the stalk—protect from the one who encircles.
य आमं मांसमदन्ति पौरुषेयं च ये क्रविः । गर्भान् खादन्ति केशवास्तान् इतो नाशयामसि
Those who eat raw flesh, and those who devour human meat, those hairy ones who consume embryos—we drive them away from here.
ये सूर्यात्परिसर्पन्ति स्नुषेव श्वशुरादधि । बजश्च तेषां पिङ्गश्च हृदयेऽधि नि विध्यताम्
Those who creep forth from the sun, as a daughter-in-law from her father-in-law's house—may the noose and the tawny one pierce their hearts.
पिङ्ग रक्ष जायमानं मा पुमांसं स्त्रियं क्रन् । आण्डादो गर्भान् मा दभन् बाधस्वेतः किमीदिनः
Tawny one, protect the one being born; do not turn the woman into a man; do not crush embryos from the egg—repel these Kimīdins.
अप्रजास्त्वं मार्तवत्समाद्रोदमघमावयम् । वृक्षादिव स्रजं कृत्वाप्रिये प्रति मुञ्च तत्
Let barrenness, the evil of spring, and the curse of the ancestor not seize us; as one removes a garland from a tree, so release us from what is not dear.
