मा नो रक्षो अभि नड्यातुमावदपोच्छन्तु मिथुना ये किमीदिनः । पृथिवी नः पार्थिवात्पात्वंहसोऽन्तरिक्षं दिव्यात्पात्वस्मान्
Let not the demon, nor the reed-demon, nor the paired, ambiguous ones, approach us; may the earth protect us from earthly harm, the midspace from atmospheric, the sky from celestial.
इन्द्र जहि पुमांसं यातुधानमुत स्त्रियं मायया शाशदानाम् । विग्रीवासो मूरदेवा ऋदन्तु मा ते दृशन्त्सूर्यमुच्चरन्तम्
Indra, strike down the male sorcerer and also the woman who deceives with magic; let the crooked-necked, root-gods perish—let them not see you when the sun rises.
प्रति चक्ष्व वि चक्ष्वेन्द्रश्च सोम जागृतम् । रक्षोभ्यो वधमस्यतमशनिं यातुमद्भ्यः
Look forth, look around, O Indra and Soma, be awake; let the weapon fall upon the demons, the thunderbolt upon the sorcerers.
8.5 अयं प्रतिसरो मणिर्वीरो वीराय बध्यते । वीर्यवान्त्सपत्नहा शूरवीरः परिपाणः सुमङ्गलः
This protective amulet, heroic, is bound for the hero; endowed with valor, destroyer of rivals, brave and heroic, guardian, and most auspicious.
अयं मणिः सपत्नहा सुवीरः सहस्वान् वाजी सहमान उग्रः । प्रत्यक्कृत्या दूषयन्न् एति वीरः
This jewel is the destroyer of rivals, endowed with brave strength, powerful, victorious, enduring, and fierce. The hero advances, confronting and defeating adversaries.
अनेनेन्द्रो मणिना वृत्रमहन्न् अनेनासुरान् पराभावयन् मनीषी । अनेनाजयद्द्यावापृथिवी उभे इमे अनेनाजयत्प्रदिशश्चतस्रः
With this jewel, Indra slew Vṛtra; with this, the wise one overcame the Asuras. With this, he conquered both heaven and earth; with this, he subdued all four directions.
अयं स्राक्त्यो मणिः प्रतीवर्तः प्रतिसरः । ओजस्वान् विमृधो वशी सो अस्मान् पातु सर्वतः
This Srāktya jewel is a turning amulet, a protective charm. Mighty, crushing, and sovereign, may it guard us from every side.
तदग्निराह तदु सोम आह बृहस्पतिः सविता तदिन्द्रः । ते मे देवाः पुरोहिताः प्रतीचीः कृत्याः प्रतिसरैरजन्तु
Agni declared this, Soma declared this, Bṛhaspati, Savitṛ, and Indra declared this. May these gods, my priests, defeat hostile actions with protective charms.
अन्तर्दधे द्यावापृथिवी उताहरुत सूर्यम् । ते मे देवाः पुरोहिताः प्रतीचीः कृत्याः प्रतिसरैरजन्तु
He concealed heaven and earth, and called forth the sun. May these gods, my priests, defeat hostile actions with protective charms.
ये स्राक्त्यं मणिं जना वर्माणि कृण्वते । सूर्य इव दिवमारुह्य वि कृत्या बाधते वशी
Those who make the Srāktya jewel their armor ascend to the sky like the sun, and, sovereign, drive away hostile actions.
स्राक्त्येन मणिना ऋषिणेव मनीषिणा । अजैषं सर्वाः पृतना वि मृधो हन्मि रक्षसः
With the Srāktya jewel, with the wisdom of the sage, I have conquered all armies; I crush and slay the demons.
याः कृत्या आङ्गिरसीर्याः कृत्या आसुरीर्याः । कृत्याः स्वयंकृता या उ चान्येभिराभृताः । उभयीस्ताः परा यन्तु परावतो नवतिं नाव्या अति
Those hostile actions of the Āṅgirases, those hostile actions of the Asuras, those self-made hostile actions, and those brought by others—let all these go far away, beyond ninety ships.
अस्मै मणिं वर्म बध्नन्तु देवा इन्द्रो विष्णुः सविता रुद्रो अग्निः । प्रजापतिः परमेष्ठी विराड्वैश्वानर ऋषयश्च सर्वे
Let the gods bind this jewel as armor for him: Indra, Viṣṇu, Savitṛ, Rudra, Agni, Prajāpati, Parameṣṭhī, Virāṭ, Vaiśvānara, and all the sages.
{१२} उत्तमो अस्योषधीनामनड्वान् जगतामिव व्याघ्रः श्वपदामिव । यमैछामाविदाम तं प्रतिस्पाशनमन्तितम्
He is the foremost among plants, unyielding, like a tiger among creatures, like a wild beast among animals. I have sought and found him, the ultimate defender.
स इद्व्याघ्रो भवत्यथो सिंहो अथो वृषा । अथो सपत्नकर्शनो यो बिभर्तीमं मणिम्
He becomes a tiger, a lion, a bull, and a tormentor of rivals—whoever bears this jewel.
नैनं घ्नन्त्यप्सरसो न गन्धर्वा न मर्त्याः । सर्वा दिशो वि राजति यो बिभर्तीमं मणिम्
Neither Apsarases, nor Gandharvas, nor mortals harm him. He shines in all directions—whoever bears this jewel.
कश्यपस्त्वामसृजत कश्यपस्त्वा समैरयत्। अबिभस्त्वेन्द्रो मानुषे बिभ्रत्संश्रेषिणेऽजयत्। मणिं सहस्रवीर्यं वर्म देवा अकृण्वत
Kaśyapa created you, Kaśyapa established you. Indra, fearless among men, wore you and conquered. The gods made the thousand-powered jewel as armor.
यस्त्वा कृत्याभिर्यस्त्वा दीक्षाभिर्यज्ञैर्यस्त्वा जिघांसति । प्रत्यक्त्वमिन्द्र तं जहि वज्रेण शतपर्वणा
Whoever seeks to harm you with hostile actions, consecrations, or sacrifices—Indra, strike him back with your hundred-ribbed thunderbolt.
अयमिद्वै प्रतीवर्त ओजस्वान् संजयो मणिः । प्रजां धनं च रक्षतु परिपाणः सुमङ्गलः
This indeed is the turning, mighty, victorious jewel. May it protect offspring and wealth, and be a guardian, auspicious in every way.
असपत्नं नो अधरादसपत्नं न उत्तरात्। इन्द्रासपत्नं नः पश्चाज्ज्योतिः शूर पुरस्कृधि
Let there be no rival for us from below, no rival from above. Indra, let there be no rival from behind; place the light, O hero, in front.
वर्म मे द्यावापृथिवी वर्माहर्वर्म सूर्यः । वर्म म इन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च वर्म धाता दधातु मे
Heaven and earth are my armor, the sun is my armor, Indra and Agni are my armor, let Dhātṛ establish armor for me.
ऐन्द्राग्नं वर्म बहुलं यदुग्रं विश्वे देवा नातिविध्यन्ति सर्वे । तन् मे तन्वं त्रायतां सर्वतो बृहदायुष्मां जरदष्टिर्यथासानि
The Indra-Agni armor, abundant and fierce, which all the gods cannot pierce—may that protect my body everywhere, granting long life and vigor as it always has.
आ मारुक्षद्देवमणिर्मह्या अरिष्टतातये । इमं मेथिमभिसंविशध्वं तनूपानं त्रिवरूथमोजसे
May the divine gem of the gods, shining forth, grant us safety from harm; approach this woman together, for strength, with the threefold protection of the body.
अस्मिन्न् इन्द्रो नि दधातु नृम्णमिमं देवासो अभिसंविशध्वम् । दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदायायुष्मान् जरदष्टिर्यथासत्
May Indra establish manliness in this one; O gods, come together for her; may she live a long life, a hundred autumns, full of years, growing old with teeth intact.
यौ ते मातोन्ममार्ज जातायाः पतिवेदनौ । दुर्णामा तत्र मा गृधदलिंश उत वत्सपः
Whatever you, O mother, have wiped away from the newborn, the signs of birth—let no evil name cling there, neither from the slime nor from the afterbirth.
पलालानुपलालौ शर्कुं कोकं मलिम्लुचं पलीजकम् । आश्रेषं वव्रिवाससमृक्षग्रीवं प्रमीलिनम्
Straw, chaff, husk, the shell, the sticky residue, the membrane, the covering, the wrinkled skin, the neck of the placenta, the one who closes the eyes—
मा सं वृतो मोप सृप ऊरू माव सृपोऽन्तरा । कृणोम्यस्यै भेषजं बजं दुर्णामचातनम्
Let none of these surround you or approach you; let them not touch your thighs or come between; I make for her a remedy, a charm to drive away evil names.
दुर्णामा च सुनामा चोभा सम्वृतमिच्छतः । अरायान् अप हन्मः सुनामा स्त्रैणमिच्छताम्
Both the evil name and the good name, whichever they seek to attach, we drive away the hostile ones; let the good name be for those who desire a husband.
यः कृष्णः केश्यसुर स्तम्बज उत तुण्डिकः । अरायान् अस्या मुष्काभ्यां भंससोऽप हन्मसि
Whoever is black, hairy, a demon, a stump-dweller, or a beak-nosed one—those enemies, by her testicles and mouth, we drive away.
अनुजिघ्रं प्रमृशन्तं क्रव्यादमुत रेरिहम् । अरायां छ्वकिष्किणो बजः पिङ्गो अनीनशत्
The one who sniffs, who touches, who eats flesh, or who licks—those hostile ones, the barking ones, the yellow ones, the toothless, we drive away.
