मा गतानामा दीधीथा ये नयन्ति परावतम् । आ रोह तमसो ज्योतिरेह्या ते हस्तौ रभामहे
Do not long for those who have gone, who lead to the distant place; ascend from darkness to light—come, we take your hands.
श्यामश्च त्वा मा शबलश्च प्रेषितौ यमस्य यौ पथिरक्षी श्वानौ । अर्वाङेहि मा वि दीध्यो मात्र तिष्ठः पराङ्मनाः
The black and the spotted, the two messengers of Yama, the dogs who guard the road—come this way, do not scatter, do not stand apart with a turned mind.
मैतं पन्थामनु गा भीम एष येन पूर्वं नेयथ तं ब्रवीमि । तम एतत्पुरुष मा प्र पत्था भयं परस्तादभयं ते अर्वाक्
Do not go on that path, it is dreadful, which they led before—I tell you; O person, do not follow that way; there is fear beyond, safety is here for you.
{१} रक्षन्तु त्वाग्नयो ये अप्स्वन्ता रक्षतु त्वा मनुष्या यमिन्धते । वैश्वानरो रक्षतु जातवेदा दिव्यस्त्वा मा प्र धाग्विद्युता सह
May the fires that are in the waters protect you, may the fire kindled by men protect you; may Vaiśvānara, Jātavedas, protect you; may the divine one not drive you away together with lightning.
मा त्वा क्रव्यादभि मंस्तारात्संकसुकाच्चर रक्षतु त्वा द्यौ रक्षतु । पृथिवी सूर्यश्च त्वा रक्षतां चन्द्रमाश्च । अन्तरिक्षं रक्षतु देवहेत्याः
Let not the flesh-eater harm you; may you be protected from the one who brings distress. May the sky protect you, may the earth and the sun protect you, may the moon protect you. May the midspace protect you from divine weapons.
बोधश्च त्वा प्रतिबोधश्च रक्षतामस्वप्नश्च त्वानवद्राणश्च रक्षताम् । गोपायंश्च त्वा जागृविश्च रक्षताम्
May wakefulness and alertness protect you; may dreamless sleep and undisturbed rest protect you. May the guardian and the watchful one protect you.
ते त्वा रक्षन्तु ते त्वा गोपायन्तु तेभ्यो नमस्तेभ्यः स्वाहा
May they protect you, may they guard you. Salutation to them, to them offering is made.
जीवेभ्यस्त्वा समुदे वायुरिन्द्रो धाता दधातु सविता त्रायमाणः । मा त्वा प्राणो बलं हासीदसुं तेऽनु ह्वयामसि
May Vāyu, Indra, Dhātṛ, and Savitṛ, the preserver, grant you life among the living. Let not your breath, your strength, depart; we call your vital spirit back.
मा त्वा जम्भः संहनुर्मा तमो विदन् मा जिह्वा बर्हिस्प्रमयुः कथा स्याः । उत्त्वादित्या वसवो भरन्तूदिन्द्राग्नी स्वस्तये
Let not the demon Jambha, nor crushing force, nor darkness harm you; let not your tongue wander to the sacrificial grass. May the Ādityas and Vasus bear you up, may Indra and Agni bring you well-being.
उत्त्वा द्यौरुत्पृथिव्युत्प्रजापतिरग्रभीत्। उत्त्वा मृत्योरोषधयः सोमराज्ञीरपीपरन्
May the sky, the earth, and Prajāpati uphold you; may the plants and the queen Soma fill you with life, away from death.
अयं देवा इहैवास्त्वयं मामुत्र गादितः । इमं सहस्रवीर्येण मृत्योरुत्पारयामसि
Let this person remain here among the gods; let him not go to the other world. With a thousandfold strength, we lift him away from death.
उत्त्वा मृत्योरपीपरं सं धमन्तु वयोधसः । मा त्वा व्यस्तकेश्यो मा त्वाघरुदो रुदन्
May you be filled away from death, may the vital airs and nourishment breathe into you. Let not the one with disheveled hair, nor the wailing messenger of evil, seize you.
आहार्षमविदं त्वा पुनरागाः पुनर्णवः । सर्वाङ्ग सर्वं ते चक्षुः सर्वमायुश्च तेऽविदम्
I have brought you back, I have found you; you have returned, renewed. All your limbs, all your sight, all your life—I have restored them to you.
व्यवात्ते ज्योतिरभूदप त्वत्तमो अक्रमीत्। अप त्वन् मृत्युं निर्ऋतिमप यक्ष्मं नि दध्मसि
The light has arisen, the darkness has departed from you. We cast away from you death, destruction, and disease.
आ रभस्वेमाममृतस्य श्नुष्टिमछिद्यमाना जरदष्टिरस्तु ते । असुं त आयुः पुनरा भरामि रजस्तमो मोप गा मा प्र मेष्ठाः
Take hold of this draught of immortality; let old age, though biting, not cut you down. I bring back your breath and your life; do not go into the realm of darkness, do not vanish away.
जीवतां ज्योतिरभ्येह्यर्वाङा त्वा हरामि शतशारदाय । अवमुञ्चन् मृत्युपाशान् अशस्तिं द्राघीय आयुः प्रतरं ते दधामि
Come near to the light of the living; I lead you back for a hundred autumns. Releasing the nooses of death and misfortune, I set for you a longer span of life.
वातात्ते प्रानमविदं सूर्याच्चक्षुरहं तव । यत्ते मनस्त्वयि तद्धारयामि सं वित्स्वाङ्गैर्वद जिह्वयालपन्
From the wind I have restored your breath, from the sun your sight. I hold your mind within you; know together with your limbs, speak with your tongue.
प्राणेन त्वा द्विपदां चतुष्पदामग्निमिव जातमभि सं धमामि । नमस्ते मृत्यो चक्षुषे नमः प्राणाय तेऽकरम्
With your breath I strengthen you, as fire is kindled, among bipeds and quadrupeds. Salutation to you, O Death, for vision; I have made offering to your breath.
अयं जीवतु मा मृतेमं समीरयामसि । कृणोम्यस्मै भेषजं मृत्यो मा पुरुषं वधीः
Let this one live, let him not die; we send him forth with breath. I prepare a remedy for him—O Death, do not slay the man.
जीवलां नघारिषां जीवन्तीमोषधीमहम् । त्रायमाणां सहमानां सहस्वतीमिह हुवेऽस्मा अरिष्टतातये
I call upon the living, the undying, the living plants—those that protect, endure, and are mighty—here, for the safety of this man.
अधि ब्रूहि मा रभथाः सृजेमं तवैव सन्त्सर्वहायाः इहास्तु । भवाशर्वौ मृडतं शर्म यच्छतमपसिध्य दुरितं धत्तमायुः
Speak over him, do not seize him; release him, let him remain here among your own. O Bhava and Śarva, be gracious, grant protection; remove misfortune, bestow long life.
अस्मै मृत्यो अधि ब्रूहीमं दयस्वोदितोऽयमेतु । अरिष्टः सर्वाङ्गः सुश्रुज्जरसा शतहायन आत्मना भुजमश्नुताम्
O Death, speak over him, have mercy; let him rise up. Let him be unharmed in every limb, well-hearing, full of vigor, living a hundred years, enjoying life with his own self.
देवानां हेतिः परि त्वा वृणक्तु पारयामि त्वा रजस उत्त्वा मृत्योरपीपरम् । आरादग्निं क्रव्यादं निरूहं जीवातवे ते परिधिं दधामि
May the weapon of the gods turn away from you; I carry you beyond the dust, even beyond death. I set the fire-eater, the devourer of flesh, far away from you for your life; I place the protective band around you.
यत्ते नियानं रजसं मृत्यो अनवधर्ष्यम् । पथ इमं तस्माद्रक्षन्तो ब्रह्मास्मै वर्म कृण्मसि
That path of yours, O Death, which is impassable in the dust—protecting from that, we make for him the armor of sacred utterance.
{३} कृणोमि ते प्राणापानौ जरां मृत्युं दीर्घमायुः स्वस्ति । वैवस्वतेन प्रहितान् यमदूतांश्चरतोऽप सेधामि सर्वान्
I establish for you the breaths of life and expiration, old age, death, long life, and well-being. I drive away all the messengers of Yama sent by Vaivasvata as they roam.
आरादरातिं निर्ऋतिं परो ग्राहिं क्रव्यादः पिशाचान् । रक्षो यत्सर्वं दुर्भूतं तत्तम इवाप हन्मसि
Far away I cast away hostility, destruction, the seizer, the flesh-eater, the ghouls, and all evil beings; whatever is malevolent, I strike it down as if into darkness.
अग्नेष्ट प्रानममृतादायुष्मतो वन्वे जातवेदसः । यथा न रिष्या अमृतः सजूरसस्तत्ते कृणोमि तदु ते समृध्यताम्
From Agni, the knower of all births, I seek for you the breath of immortality and long life. Just as the immortal, joined with companions, does not perish, so I make this for you; may it prosper for you.
शिवे ते स्तां द्यावापृथिवी असंतापे अभिश्रियौ । शं ते सूर्य आ तपतु शं वातो वातु ते हृदे । शिवा अभि क्षरन्तु त्वापो दिव्याः पयस्वतीः
May Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you, free from distress and full of splendor. May the Sun shine favorably upon you; may the wind blow well for your heart. May the divine, milk-giving waters flow auspiciously around you.
शिवास्ते सन्त्वोषधय उत्त्वाहार्षमधरस्या उत्तरां पृथिवीमभि । तत्र त्वादित्यौ रक्षतां सूर्याचन्द्रमसावुभा
May the healing plants be auspicious for you, from the lower to the upper earth. There, may the two Adityas, the Sun and the Moon, both protect you.
यत्ते वासः परिधानं यां नीविं कृणुषे त्वम् । शिवं ते तन्वे तत्कृण्मः संस्पर्शेऽद्रूक्ष्णमस्तु ते
Whatever garment you wear, whatever loincloth you put on, we make it auspicious for your body; may its touch be harmless to you.
