यान् आवह उशतो देव देवांस्तान् प्रेरय स्वे अग्ने सधस्थे । जक्षिवांसः पपिवांसो मधून्यस्मै धत्त वसवो वसूनि
O Agni, bring here those eager gods, and set them in your own abode; may they, having eaten and drunk the sweet offerings, bestow their treasures upon us.
सुगा वो देवाः सदना अकर्म य आजग्म सवने मा जुषाणाः । वहमाना भरमाणाः स्वा वसूनि वसुं घर्मं दिवमा रोहतानु
O gods, we have made your seats easy, you who have come to the pressing with favor; bearing and carrying your own riches, ascend to the warm heaven with wealth.
यज्ञ यज्ञं गच्छ यज्ञपतिं गच्छ । स्वां योनिं गच्छ स्वाहा
Go to the sacrifice, go to the lord of sacrifice; go to your own source—svāhā.
एष ते यज्ञो यज्ञपते सहसूक्तवाकः । सुवीर्यः स्वाहा
This is your sacrifice, O lord of sacrifice, spoken with a thousand hymns; may it bring good fortune—svāhā.
वषड्धुतेभ्यो वषडहुतेभ्यः । देवा गातुविदो गातुं वित्त्वा गातुमित
To those who have been offered with vaṣaṭ, to those who have not been offered with vaṣaṭ; O gods, knowing the path, having found the path, go on the path.
मनसस्पत इमं नो दिवि देवेषु यज्ञम् । स्वाहा दिवि स्वाहा पृथिव्यां स्वाहान्तरिक्षे स्वाहा वाते धां स्वाहा
O lord of mind, this sacrifice of ours among the gods in heaven—svāhā in heaven, svāhā on earth, svāhā in the midspace, svāhā in the wind, svāhā.
सं बर्हिरक्तं हविषा घृतेन समिन्द्रेण वसुना सं मरुद्भिः । सं देवैर्विश्वदेवेभिरक्तमिन्द्रं गच्छतु हविः स्वाहा
United be the strewn grass, the offering, and the ghee; united with Indra's wealth, united with the Maruts; united with all the gods, let the offering reach Indra—svāhā.
परि स्तृणीहि परि धेहि वेदिं मा जामिं मोषीरमुया शयानाम् । होतृषदनं हरितं हिरण्ययं निष्का एते यजमानस्य लोके
Spread around, lay around the altar; do not take away the kin, nor the one lying with the root; the seat of the Hotṛ, green and golden, these are the ornaments in the world of the sacrificer.
पर्यावर्ते दुष्वप्न्यात्पापात्स्वप्न्यादभूत्याः । ब्रह्माहमन्तरं कृण्वे परा स्वप्नमुखाः शुचः
Turn away from evil dreams, from sinful dreams, from misfortune; I make a barrier with sacred utterance—let the faces of dreams turn away, let them be pure.
यत्स्वप्ने अन्नमश्नामि न प्रातरधिगम्यते । सर्वं तदस्तु मे शिवं नहि तद् दृश्यते दिवा
Whatever food I eat in a dream, which is not attained in the morning, let all that be auspicious for me; for it is not seen by day.
नमस्कृत्य द्यावापृथिवीभ्यामन्तरिक्षाय मृत्यवे । मेक्षाम्यूर्ध्वस्तिष्ठन् मा मा हिंसिषुरीश्वराः
Having bowed to Heaven and Earth, to the midspace, to Death, I look up, standing upright; may the lords not harm me.
को अस्या नो द्रुहोऽवद्यवत्या उन् नेष्यति क्षत्रियो वस्य इच्छन् । को यज्ञकामः क उ पूर्तिकामः को देवेषु वनुते दीर्घमायुः
Who will drive away from us this harmful, injurious one, desiring the wealth of a warrior? Who, wishing for sacrifice, who, wishing for fulfillment, who among the gods will grant long life?
कः पृश्निं धेनुं वरुणेन दत्तामथर्वणे सुदुघां नित्यवत्साम् । बृहस्पतिना सख्यं जुषाणो यथावशं तन्वः कल्पयाति
Who, having received the speckled cow, given by Varuṇa to Atharvan, ever-yielding, always with a calf, cherishing friendship with Bṛhaspati, arranges his body as he wishes?
अपक्रामन् पौरुषेयाद्वृणानो दैव्यं वचः । प्रणीतीरभ्यावर्तस्व विश्वेभिः सखिभिः सह
Turning away from human speech, I choose divine speech; return with right guidance, together with all your friends.
यदस्मृति चकृम किं चिदग्न उपारिम चरणे जातवेदः । ततः पाहि त्वं नः प्रचेतः शुभे सखिभ्यो अमृतत्वमस्तु नः
Whatever forgetfulness we have committed, O Agni Jātavedas, knowingly or unknowingly, from that protect us, O wise one; may immortality be ours among good friends.
अव दिवस्तारयन्ति सप्त सूर्यस्य रश्मयः । आपः समुद्रिया धारास्तास्ते शल्यमसिस्रसन्
The seven rays of the sun carry away the darkness of day; the streams of the oceanic waters, they have removed the dart.
यो न स्तायद्दिप्सति यो न आविः स्वो विद्वान् अरणो वा नो अग्ने । प्रतीच्येत्वरणी दत्वती तान् मैषामग्ने वास्तु भून् मो अपत्यम्
Whoever wishes to harm us, who is openly hostile, or who is secretly so, O Agni, whether known or unknown to us—may the returning, giving one, keep them away; O Agni, let not their offspring remain.
यो नः सुप्तान् जाग्रतो वाभिदासात्तिष्ठतो वा चरतो जातवेदः । वैश्वानरेण सयुजा सजोषास्तान् प्रतीचो निर्दह जातवेदः
Whoever attacks us, sleeping or awake, standing or moving, O Jātavedas, with Vaiśvānara as your ally, burn them up, facing them, O Jātavedas.
इदमुग्राय बभ्रवे नमो यो अक्षेषु तनूवशी । घृतेन कलिं शिक्षामि स नो मृडातीदृशे
Homage to the fierce, tawny one who is master over himself at the dice; with ghee I appease the losing throw—may he be gracious to us in this matter.
घृतमप्सराभ्यो वह त्वमग्ने पांसून् अक्षेभ्यः सिकता अपश्च । यथाभागं हव्यदातिं जुषाणा मदन्ति देवा उभयानि हव्या
Carry away, O Agni, the dust from the dice, the sand and the grit, with ghee for the Apsarases; as the gods, rejoicing, accept their share of the oblation, may they delight in both kinds of offerings.
अप्सरसः सधमादं मदन्ति हविर्धानमन्तरा सूर्यं च । ता मे हस्तौ सं सृजन्तु घृतेन सपत्नं मे कितवं रन्धयन्तु
The Apsarases rejoice in the shared feast, in the offering placed between the sun and us; may they join my hands together with ghee, may they subdue my rival, the deceitful gambler.
आदिनवं प्रतिदीव्ने घृतेनास्मामभि क्षर । वृक्षमिवाशन्या जहि यो अस्मान् प्रतिदीव्यति
Pour forth the new, the returning, with ghee upon us; strike down, as with an axe a tree, the one who opposes us in return.
यो नो द्युवे धनमिदं चकार यो अक्षाणां ग्लहनं शेषणं च । स नो देवो हविरिदं जुषाणो गन्धर्वेभिः सधमादं मदेम
He who by day has made this wealth for us, who has brought about the winning and the losing of the dice—may that god, accepting this offering, grant us joy in the shared feast with the Gandharvas.
संवसव इति वो नामधेयमुग्रंपश्या राष्ट्रभृतो ह्यक्षाः । तेभ्यो व इन्दवो हविषा विधेम वयं स्याम पतयो रयीणाम्
‘Samvasava’ is your name, O fierce ones, the dice, lords of the realm; to them we offer libations with oblation—may we become masters of riches.
देवान् यन् नाथितो हुवे ब्रह्मचर्यं यदूषिम । अक्षान् यद्बभ्रून् आलभे ते नो मृडन्त्वीदृशे
When, seeking support, I invoke the gods, when I practice discipline, when I take up the tawny dice—may they be gracious to us in this matter.
अग्न इन्द्रश्च दाशुषे हतो वृत्राण्यप्रति । उभा हि वृत्रहन्तमा
Agni and Indra, for the worshipper, you have slain the adversaries; for you both are slayers of foes.
याभ्यामजयन्त्स्वरग्र एव यावातस्थतुर्भुवनानि विश्वा । प्र चर्षणीवृषणा वज्रबाहू अग्निमिन्द्रं वृत्रहणा हुवेऽहम्
By whom the worlds were conquered at the very beginning, by whom all beings were established—O mighty ones, strong-armed, destroyers of foes, I invoke Agni and Indra, the slayers of adversaries.
उप त्वा देवो अग्रभीच्चमसेन बृहस्पतिः । इन्द्र गीर्भिर्न आ विश यजमानाय सुन्वते
To you the god grasped the ladle, O Indra, Brihaspati; come to us with praises, O Indra, for the worshipper who pours the offering.
इन्द्रस्य कुक्षिरसि सोमधान आत्मा देवानामुत मानुषाणाम् । इह प्रजा जनय यास्त आसु या अन्यत्रेह तास्ते रमन्ताम्
You are Indra’s belly, the seat of Soma, the soul of the gods and of men; here, generate offspring—those who are here, and those elsewhere, may they find delight here.
शुम्भनी द्यावापृथिवी अन्तिसुम्ने महिव्रते । आपः सप्त सुस्रुवुर्देवीस्ता नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः
Brightly shining, O Heaven and Earth, of noble vow, of great ordinance, the seven divine waters have flowed forth—may they release us from distress.
