उप ह्वये सुदुघां धेनुमेतां सुहस्तो गोधुगुत दोहदेनाम् । श्रेष्ठं सवं सविता साविषन् नोऽभीद्धो घर्मस्तदु षु प्र वोचत्
I call upon this well-yielding cow, with good hands, to be milked by the milker. May Savitar bring us the best strength; let the heated vessel, unopposed, declare this for us.
हिङ्कृण्वती वसुपत्नी वसूनां वत्समिच्छन्ती मनसा न्यागन् । दुहामश्विभ्यां पयो अघ्न्येयं सा वर्धतां महते सौभगाय
Lowing, the mistress of riches, desiring her calf in her mind, she comes near. Let us milk this uninjured cow for the Aśvins; may she grow for great good fortune.
जुष्टो दमूना अतिथिर्दुरोण इमं नो यज्ञमुप याहि विद्वान् । विश्वा अग्ने अभियुजो विहत्य शत्रूयतामा भरा भोजनानि
Favored, house-lord, guest in the home, come to this our sacrifice, O wise one. O Agni, having overcome all adversaries, bring us the foods, let them be for the defeat of enemies.
अग्ने शर्ध महते सौभगाय तव द्युम्नान्युत्तमानि सन्तु । सं जास्पत्यं सुयममा कृणुष्व शत्रूयतामभि तिष्ठा महांसि
O Agni, strive for great good fortune; may your highest glories be ours. Unite our households in harmony; stand firm against the great ones who are our foes.
सूयवसाद्भगवती हि भूया अधा वयं भगवन्तः स्याम । अद्धि तृणमघ्न्ये विश्वदानीं पिब शुद्धमुदकमाचरन्ती
May she be blessed with good pasture; then may we too be blessed. Eat the grass, O uninjured one, giver of all; drink the pure water as you go.
अपचितां लोहिनीनां कृष्णा मातेति शुश्रुम । मुनेर्देवस्य मूलेन सर्वा विध्यामि ता अहम्
We have heard that the black one is called the mother of the reddish ones. By the root of the divine sage, I pierce them all.
विध्याम्यासां प्रथमां विध्यामि उत मध्यमाम् । इदं जघन्यामासामा छिनद्मि स्तुकामिव
I pierce the first of them, I pierce also the middle one. This last of them I cut off, as one cuts a tuft of hair.
त्वाष्ट्रेणाहं वचसा वि त ईर्ष्याममीमदम् । अथो यो मन्युष्टे पते तमु ते शमयामसि
With the speech of Tvaṣṭṛ I have dispelled your jealousy. And whatever anger is in you, that we calm for you.
व्रतेन त्वं व्रतपते समक्तो विश्वाहा सुमना दीदिहीह । तं त्वा वयं जातवेदः समिद्धं प्रजावन्त उप सदेम सर्वे
By the vow, O lord of vows, you are adorned; shine here always with good mind. You whom we, O Jātavedas, all approach together, kindled and full of offspring.
प्रजावतीः सूयवसे रुशन्तीः शुद्धा अपः सुप्रपाणे पिबन्तीः । मा व स्तेन ईशत माघशंसः परि वो रुद्रस्य हेतिर्वृणक्तु
May the waters, rich in offspring, bright, pure, drinkable with good hands, not be seized by thief or evil-wisher; may the weapon of Rudra keep far from you.
पदज्ञा स्थ रमतयः संहिता विश्वनाम्नीः । उप मा देवीर्देवेभिरेत । इमं गोष्ठमिदं सदो घृतेनास्मान्त्समुक्षत
You are skilled in steps, joyful, united, bearing all names. Come to me, goddesses, with the gods. Into this cattle-pen, into this seat, let ghee be poured for us.
आ सुस्रसः सुस्रसो असतीभ्यो असत्तराः । सेहोररसतरा हवणाद्विक्लेदीयसीः
Let those that are most flowing be more flowing than the less flowing ones; let those with more sap be more sappy than those with less; let those most easily melted be more so than those less so.
या ग्रैव्या अपचितोऽथो या उपपक्ष्याः । विजाम्नि या अपचितः स्वयंस्रसः
Those that are from the neck, and those that are from the sides, and those that are from the joints, and those that flow of themselves—
यः कीकसाः प्रशृणाति तलीद्यमवतिष्ठति । निर्हास्तं सर्वं जायान्यं यः कश्च ककुदि श्रितः
Whoever scratches with itching, or stands with a scab, let all that, every kind of skin disease, and whatever is lodged on the hump, be driven out.
पक्षी जायान्यः पतति स आ विशति पूरुषम् । तदक्षितस्य भेषजमुभयोः सुक्षतस्य च
The bird-like skin disease that flies, it enters the man; this is the remedy for the unhealed and for both the well and the wounded.
विद्म वै ते जायान्य जानं यतो जायान्य जायसे । कथं ह तत्र त्वं हनो यस्य कृण्मो हविर्गृहे
Truly, we know your skin disease, the origin from which you arise. How then can you be slain, when we make the offering in the house?
धृषत्पिब कलशे सोममिन्द्र वृत्रहा शूर समरे वसूनाम् । माध्यन्दिने सवन आ वृषस्व रयिष्ठानो रयिमस्मासु धेहि
Bold Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, drink the Soma in the vessel; O hero, in the battle for riches, become strong at the midday pressing; grant us abundant wealth.
सांतपना इदं हविर्मरुतस्तज्जुजुष्टन । अस्माकोती रिशादसः
O Maruts, who bring affliction, accept this offering; may you, fierce ones, be on our side.
यो नो मर्तो मरुतो दुर्हृणायुस्तिरश्चित्तानि वसवो जिघांसति । द्रुहः पाशान् प्रति मुञ्चतां सस्तपिष्ठेन तपसा हन्तना तम्
If any mortal, O Maruts, with hostile intent, wishes to harm us or plots against us, O Vasus, release us from the snares of deceit and destroy him with your most powerful heat.
सम्वत्सरीणा मरुतः स्वर्का उरुक्षयाः सगणा मानुषासः । ते अस्मत्पाशान् प्र मुञ्चन्त्वेनसस्सांतपना मत्सरा मादयिष्णवः
O Maruts, shining, dwelling in spacious abodes, together with your hosts and human followers, release us from bonds of sin; O afflicting, jealous, gladdening ones, set us free.
वि ते मुञ्चामि रशनां वि योक्त्रं वि नियोजनम् । इहैव त्वमजस्र एध्यग्ने
I loosen your strap, your harness, your binding; here and now, Agni, may you blaze unceasingly.
अस्मै क्षत्राणि धारयन्तमग्ने युनज्मि त्वा ब्रह्मणा दैव्येन । दीदिह्यस्मभ्यं द्रविणेह भद्रं प्रेमं वोचो हविर्दां देवतासु
To him who upholds powers, O Agni, I yoke you with divine prayer; shine for us here with wealth and blessings; speak kindly to us, you who give offerings to the gods.
यत्ते देवा अकृण्वन् भागधेयममावास्ये संवसन्तो महित्वा । तेना नो यज्ञं पिपृहि विश्ववारे रयिं नो धेहि सुभगे सुवीरम्
That share which the gods made for you, gathering together at the new moon in greatness—by that, protect our sacrifice, O all-encompassing one; grant us wealth, O fortunate one, and noble offspring.
अहमेवास्म्यमावास्या मामा वसन्ति सुकृतो मयीमे । मयि देवा उभये साध्याश्चेन्द्रज्येष्ठाः समगच्छन्त सर्वे
I myself am this new moon; the virtuous dwell in me; in me, both the gods and the Sādhyas, with Indra as their chief, have all assembled.
आगन् रात्री सङ्गमनी वसूनामूर्जं पुष्टं वस्वावेशयन्ती । अमावास्यायै हविषा विधेमोर्जं दुहाना पयसा न आगन्
Night has come, the gatherer of treasures, bringing strength and nourishment, entering among the riches; we offer with oblation to the new moon, who, milking out strength, has come with abundance like milk.
अमावास्ये न त्वदेतान्यन्यो विश्वा रूपाणि परिभूर्जजान । यत्कामास्ते जुहुमस्तन् नो अस्तु वयं स्याम पतयो रयीणाम्
On the new moon, no one else but you has created all these forms, O all-pervading one; whatever desires we offer, may they be fulfilled; may we become masters of wealth.
पूर्णा पश्चादुत पूर्णा पुरस्तादुन्मध्यतः पौर्णमासी जिगाय । तस्यां देवैः संवसन्तो महित्वा नाकस्य पृष्ठे समिषा मदेम
Full behind and full before, rising in the midst, the full moon has triumphed; in her, dwelling with the gods in greatness, may we rejoice with offerings on the summit of heaven.
वृषभं वाजिनं वयं पौर्णमासं यजामहे । स नो ददात्वक्षितां रयिमनुपदस्वतीम्
We sacrifice to the bull, the vigorous one, the full moon; may he grant us inexhaustible, ever-increasing wealth.
प्रजापते न त्वदेतान्यन्यो विश्वा रूपाणि परिभूर्जजान । यत्कामास्ते जुहुमस्तन् नो अस्तु वयं स्याम पतयो रयीणाम्
O Lord of creatures, no one else but you has created all these forms; whatever desires we offer, may they be fulfilled; may we become masters of wealth.
पौर्णमासी प्रथमा यज्ञियासीदह्नां रात्रीणामतिशर्वरेषु । ये त्वां यज्ञैर्यज्ञिये अर्धयन्त्यमी ते नाके सुकृतः प्रविष्टाः
The full moon was the first to be worthy of sacrifice among nights, surpassing the others; those who honor you, O worthy of sacrifice, with offerings, they, the virtuous, have entered heaven.
