आहं खिदामि ते मनो राजाश्वः पृष्ट्यामिव । रेष्मछिन्नं यथा तृणं मयि ते वेष्टतां मनः
I draw your mind to me, as a royal horse is drawn to the yoke; as grass is bound together, so may your mind be bound to me.
आञ्जनस्य मदुघस्य कुष्ठस्य नलदस्य च । तुरो भगस्य हस्ताभ्यामनुरोधनमुद्भरे
With ointment, honey, costus, and spikenard, I draw forth the favor of Bhaga with both hands.
संदानं वो बृहस्पतिः संदानं सविता करत्। संदानं मित्रो अर्यमा संदानं भगो अश्विना
May Bṛhaspati bind you together, may Savitṛ bind you together; may Mitra and Aryaman bind you together, may Bhaga and the Aśvins bind you together.
सं परमान्त्समवमान् अथो सं द्यामि मध्यमान् । इन्द्रस्तान् पर्यहार्दाम्ना तान् अग्ने सं द्या त्वम्
May the highest, the lowest, and the middlemost be united; Indra, with his might, has surrounded them—Agni, unite them for us.
अमी ये युधमायन्ति केतून् कृत्वानीकशः । इन्द्रस्तान् पर्यहार्दाम्न तान् अग्ने सं द्या त्वम्
Those who come to battle, having set their banners in front—Indra, with his might, has surrounded them—Agni, unite them for us.
आदानेन संदानेनामित्रान् आ द्यामसि । अपाना ये चैषां प्राणा असुनासून्त्समछिदन्
By taking and by binding, we bring the enemies under control; those whose breaths and lives are departing, let them become unconscious.
इदमादानमकरं तपसेन्द्रेण संशितम् । अमित्रा येऽत्र नः सन्ति तान् अग्न आ द्या त्वम्
This taking I have performed, with austerity and with Indra's assent; those who are our enemies here, Agni, bring them under control.
ऐनान् द्यतामिन्द्राग्नी सोमो राजा च मेदिनौ । इन्द्रो मरुत्वान् आदानममित्रेभ्यः कृणोतु नः
May Indra and Agni, Soma, and the king of the earth strike them down; may Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, take away the possessions of our enemies for us.
यथा मनो मनस्केतैः परापतत्याशुमत्। एवा त्वं कासे प्र पत मनसोऽनु प्रवाय्यम्
As the mind, swift as thought, flies far away with its desires, so may you, O cough, fly away, following the course of the mind.
यथा बाणः सुसंशितः परापतत्याशुमत्। एवा त्वं कासे प्र पत पृथिव्या अनु संवतम्
As an arrow, well-sharpened, flies swiftly away, so may you, O cough, fly away, following the path of the earth.
यथा सूर्यस्य रश्मयः परापतन्त्याशुमत्। एवा त्वं कासे प्र पत समुद्रस्यानु विक्षरम्
As the rays of the sun swiftly fly forth, so may you, O cough, fly away, following the flow of the ocean.
आयने ते परायणे दूर्वा रोहन्तु पुष्पिणीः । उत्सो वा तत्र जायतां ह्रदो वा पुण्डरीकवान्
At your journey and return, may the sacred dūrvā grass grow, bearing flowers; may a spring arise there, or a pond full of lotuses.
अपामिदं न्ययनं समुद्रस्य निवेशनम् । मध्ये ह्रदस्य नो गृहाः पराचीना मुखा कृधि
This is the descent of the waters, the resting place of the ocean; in the midst of the lake are our homes—make their faces turned away from us.
हिमस्य त्वा जरायुणा शाले परि व्ययामसि । शीतह्रदा हि नो भुवोऽग्निष्कृणोतु भेषजम्
With the membrane of frost we enclose you around the rice field; for our lands are cold-laked—may Agni prepare the remedy.
विश्वजित्त्रायमाणायै मा परि देहि । त्रायमाणे द्विपाच्च सर्वं नो रक्ष चतुष्पाद् यच्च नः स्वम्
Do not harm the one who conquers all and protects; in her protection, guard all our two-footed and four-footed beings, and whatever is ours.
त्रायमाणे विश्वजिते मा परि देहि । विश्वजिद्द्विपाच्च सर्वं नो रक्ष चतुष्पाड्यच्च नः स्वम्
Do not harm the protector who conquers all; in her victory, guard all our two-footed and four-footed beings, and whatever is ours.
विश्वजित्कल्याण्यै मा परि देहि । कल्याणि द्विपाच्च सर्वं नो रक्ष चतुष्पाद् यच्च नः स्वम्
Do not harm the one who conquers all and brings prosperity; in her prosperity, guard all our two-footed and four-footed beings, and whatever is ours.
कल्याणि सर्वविदे मा परि देहि । सर्वविद्द्विपाच्च सर्वं नो रक्ष चतुष्पाद् यच्च नः स्वम्
Do not harm the one who knows all and brings prosperity; in her all-knowing, guard all our two-footed and four-footed beings, and whatever is ours.
त्वं नो मेधे प्रथमा गोभिरश्वेभिरा गहि । त्वं सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिस्त्वं नो असि यज्ञिया
You, O Medhā, come to us first with cows and horses; you are with the rays of the sun, you are worthy of sacrifice for us.
मेधामहं प्रथमां ब्रह्मण्वतीं ब्रह्मजूतामृषिष्टुताम् । प्रपीतां ब्रह्मचारिभिर्देवानामवसे हुवे
I invoke Medhā, the first, inspired by the Brāhmaṇas, praised by the seers, honored by the students, for the help of the gods.
यां मेधामृभवो विदुर्यां मेधामसुरा विदुः । ऋषयो भद्रां मेधां यां विदुस्तां मय्या वेशयामसि
The wisdom which the sages born of truth know, the wisdom which the gods know, the auspicious wisdom which the seers know—may we instill that wisdom within ourselves.
यामृषयो भूतकृतो मेधां मेधाविनो विदुः । तया मामद्य मेधयाग्ने मेधाविनं कृणु
The wisdom which the wise seers, creators of beings, know—O Agni, with that wisdom, make me wise today.
मेधां सायं मेधां प्रातर्मेधां मध्यन्दिनं परि । मेधां सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिर्वचसा वेशयामहे
Wisdom in the evening, wisdom in the morning, wisdom throughout midday—may we instill wisdom with the rays of the sun and with speech.
पिप्पली क्षिप्तभेषज्युतातिविद्धभेषजी । तां देवाः समकल्पयन्न् इयं जीवितवा अलम्
The long pepper, whose remedy is cast, whose remedy is well-known—this the gods have arranged; it is sufficient for life.
पिप्पल्यः समवदन्तायतीर्जननादधि । यं जीवमश्नवामहै न स रिष्याति पूरुषः
The long peppers, speaking together, are placed at the origin of birth; the person who partakes of this living one does not perish.
असुरास्त्वा न्यखनन् देवास्त्वोदवपन् पुनः । वातीकृतस्य भेषजीमथो क्षिप्तस्य भेषजीम्
The demons buried you, but the gods dug you up again—the remedy for what is wind-caused, the remedy for what is cast down.
प्रत्नो हि कमीड्यो अध्वरेषु सनाच्च होता नव्यश्च सत्सि । स्वां चाग्ने तन्वं पिप्रायस्वास्मभ्यं च सौभगमा यजस्व
You are ancient and worthy of praise in the sacrifices, both the old and the new Hotṛ; O Agni, cherish your own form and grant us good fortune.
ज्येष्ठघ्न्यां जातो विचृतोर्यमस्य मूलबर्हणात्परि पाह्येनम् । अत्येनं नेषद्दुरितानि विश्वा दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदाय
Born to destroy the eldest, from the root of Yama's dispersal, protect this one; lead him past all evils for a long life of a hundred autumns.
व्याघ्रेऽह्न्यजनिष्ट वीरो नक्षत्रजा जायमानः सुवीरः । स मा वधीत्पितरं वर्धमानो मा मातरं प्र मिनीज्जनित्रीम्
A hero was born on the day of the tiger, born under a constellation, a strong man; may he not strike his father as he grows, nor harm his mother who bore him.
इमं मे अग्ने पुरुषं मुमुग्ध्ययं यो बद्धः सुयतो लालपीति । अतोऽधि ते कृणवद्भागधेयं यदानुन्मदितोऽसति
O Agni, release this man for me—he who is bound, who mutters with a loosened tongue; from this, assign him his proper share, when he is no longer mad.
