हिरण्यवर्णाः शुचयः पावका यासु जातः सविता यास्वग्निः । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Golden-hued, pure, and radiant are those waters in which Savitṛ was born, in which Agni was born; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
यासां राजा वरुणो याति मध्ये सत्यानृते अवपश्यन् जनानाम् । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Among them King Varuṇa moves, discerning truth and falsehood among people; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
यासां देवा दिवि कृण्वन्ति भक्षं या अन्तरिक्षे बहुधा भवन्ति । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Those waters in which the gods in heaven make their food, which exist in many forms in the atmosphere; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
शिवेन मा चक्षुषा पश्यतापः शिवया तन्वोप स्पृशत त्वचं मे । घृतश्चुतः शुचयो याः पावकास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
With auspicious sight may you look upon me, waters; with auspicious touch may you touch my skin. Pure, radiant, and clarified-butter-flowing are those waters; may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
इयं वीरुन् मधुजाता मधुना त्वा खनामसि । मधोरधि प्रजातासि सा नो मधुमतस्कृधि
This is the honey-born Viru; with honey we dig you up. You are born from honey; make us full of honeyed sweetness.
जिह्वाया अग्रे मधु मे जिह्वामूले मधूलकम् । ममेदह क्रतावसो मम चित्तमुपायसि
At the tip of my tongue is honey, at the root of my tongue is honeyed sap. Let my words be pleasing; may you draw my mind to yourself.
मधुमन् मे निक्रमणं मधुमन् मे परायणम् । वाचा वदामि मधुमद्भूयासं मधुसंदृशः
May my approach be honey-sweet, may my departure be honey-sweet. With speech I speak; may I become honey-sweet, one who is seen as honeyed.
मधोरस्मि मधुतरो मदुघान् मधुमत्तरः । मामित्किल त्वं वनाः शाखां मधुमतीमिव
I am of honey, more honeyed than honey, most honeyed among the honeyed. Do not, like a branch heavy with honey, break me off, O forest.
परि त्वा परितत्नुनेक्षुणागामविद्विषे । यथा मां कमिन्यसो यथा मन् नापगा असः
Around you I wrap sweet cane, for the one who comes without hatred. So that women may desire me, so that men may not turn away from me.
यदाबध्नन् दाक्षायणा हिरण्यं शतानीकाय सुमनस्यमानाः । तत्ते बध्नाम्यायुषे वर्चसे बलाय दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदाय
When the Daksha-born ones, with joyful minds, bound the gold for the hundredfold-bannered one, I bind this for you—for life, for brilliance, for strength, for long years, for a hundred autumns.
नैनं रक्षांसि न पिशाचाः सहन्ते देवानामोजः प्रथमजं ह्येतत्। यो बिभर्ति दाक्षायणं हिरण्यं स जीवेषु कृणुते दीर्घमायुः
Neither demons nor spirits can withstand this, for it is the first-born might of the gods. Whoever bears the Daksha-born gold, he gains long life among the living.
अपां तेजो ज्योतिरोजो बलं च वनस्पतीनामुत वीर्याणि । इन्द्र इवेन्द्रियाण्यधि धारयामो अस्मिन् तद्दक्षमाणो बिभरद्धिरण्यम्
The radiance, light, vigor, and strength of the plants, and their powers—we place these energies, like Indra his powers, in the one who, with skill, bears this gold.
समानां मासामृतुभिष्ट्वा वयं संवत्सरस्य पयसा पिपर्मि । इन्द्राग्नी विश्वे देवास्तेऽनु मन्यन्तामहृणीयमानाः
Having passed through the months and seasons, I am filled with the essence of the year. Indra, Agni, all the gods—may they approve as I am adorned.
वेनस्तत्पश्यत्परमं गुहा यद्यत्र विश्वं भवत्येकरूपम् । इदं पृश्निरदुहज्जायमानाः स्वर्विदो अभ्यनूषत व्राः
Vena beheld that supreme mystery, where all becomes one form. The speckled cow, giving birth, poured forth; those who know the light approached the streams.
प्र तद्वोचेदमृतस्य विद्वान् गन्धर्वो धाम परमं गुहा यत्। त्रीणि पदानि निहिता गुहास्य यस्तानि वेद स पितुष्पितासत्
The knower of immortality declared that secret dwelling—the Gandharva, who knows the highest place. Three steps are set in his secret; whoever knows them becomes the ancestor of ancestors.
स नः पिता जनिता स उत बन्धुर्धामानि वेद भुवनानि विश्वा । यो देवानां नामध एक एव तं संप्रश्नं भुवना यन्ति सर्वा
He is our father, begetter, and also our kin; he knows all abodes and worlds. He alone bears the name among the gods; to him all worlds come together for inquiry.
परि द्यावापृथिवी सद्य आयमुपातिष्ठे प्रथमजामृतस्य । वाचमिव वक्तरि भुवनेष्ठा धास्युरेष नन्वेषो अग्निः
He swiftly approaches, encompassing heaven and earth, the firstborn of immortality. Like speech in the speaker, he is established in the worlds—this indeed is Agni.
परि विश्वा भुवनान्यायमृतस्य तन्तुं विततं दृशे कम् । यत्र देवा अमृतमानशानाः समाने योनावध्यैरयन्त
He encircles all worlds, the thread of immortality stretched out for vision, where the gods, delighting in immortality, were born together in a common womb.
दिव्यो गन्धर्वो भुवनस्य यस्पतिरेक एव नमस्यो विक्ष्वीड्यः । तं त्वा यौमि ब्रह्मणा दिव्य देव नमस्ते अस्तु दिवि ते सधस्थम्
The celestial Gandharva, lord of beings, alone is worthy of reverence and praise among the tribes. To you I come with sacred utterance, O divine one; reverence to you, whose seat is in heaven.
दिवि स्पृष्टो यजतः सूर्यत्वगवयाता हरसो दैव्यस्य । मृडात्गन्धर्वो भुवनस्य यस्पतिरेक एव नमस्यः सुशेवाः
Touched in heaven, radiant as the sun, swift as a horse, of divine might—may the Gandharva, lord of beings, gracious and worthy of worship, grant us peace.
अनवद्याभिः समु जग्म आभिरप्सरास्वपि गन्धर्व आसीत्। समुद्र आसां सदनं म आहुर्यतः सद्य आ च परा च यन्ति
With flawless ones he has come together; among the Apsarases the Gandharva was present. The ocean is said to be their dwelling, from which they come and go in an instant.
अभ्रिये दिद्युन् नक्षत्रिये या विश्वावसुं गन्धर्वं सचध्वे । ताभ्यो वो देवीर्नम इत्कृणोमि
With the cloud, with the lightning, with the stars—you join Viśvāvasu the Gandharva. To you goddesses I offer my reverence.
याः क्लन्दास्तमिषीचयोऽक्षकामा मनोमुहः । ताभ्यो गन्धर्वभ्योऽप्सराभ्योऽकरं नमः
To those Gandharvas and Apsarases who bring weariness, darkness, desire for dice, and confusion of mind, I offer my reverence.
अदो यदवधावत्यवत्कमधि पर्वतात्। तत्ते कृणोमि भेषजं सुभेषजं यथाससि
That which runs down from the summit of the mountain, I make that your remedy, a most excellent medicine, as you desire.
आदङ्गा कुविदङ्ग शतं या भेषजानि ते । तेषामसि त्वमुत्तममनास्रावमरोगणम्
From the limb, perhaps from another limb, a hundred remedies are yours; among them you are the highest, not flowing, free from disease.
नीचैः खनन्त्यसुरा अरुस्राणमिदं महत्। तदास्रावस्य भेषजं तदु रोगमनीनशत्
The Asuras dig deep for this great red substance; that is the remedy for discharge, that destroys disease.
उपजीका उद्भरन्ति समुद्रादधि भेषजम् । तदास्रावस्य भेषजं तदु रोगमशीशमत्
The leeches draw up medicine from the ocean; that is the remedy for discharge, that destroys disease.
अरुस्राणमिदं महत्पृथिव्या अध्युद्भृतम् । तदास्रावस्य भेषजं तदु रोगमनीनशत्
This great red substance is raised up from the earth; that is the remedy for discharge, that destroys disease.
शं नो भवन्त्वप ओषधयः शिवाः । इन्द्रस्य वज्रो अप हन्तु रक्षस आराद्विसृष्टा इषवः पतन्तु रक्षसाम्
May the waters and the healing herbs be auspicious for us; may Indra's bolt drive away the demons; may arrows, released from afar, fall upon the demons.
दीर्घायुत्वाय बृहते रणायारिष्यन्तो दक्षमाणाः सदैव । मणिं विष्कन्धदूषणं जङ्गिडं बिभृमो वयम्
For long life, for greatness, for battle, striving, ever skillful, we wear the amulet, the Jaṅgiḍa, which wards off poison and corruption.
