यो रक्षांसि निजूर्वत्यग्निस्तिग्मेन शोचिषा । स नः पर्षदति द्विषः
He who, with sharp flame, drives away the demons—Agni—may he lead us past our foes.
यः परस्याः परावतस्तिरो धन्वातिरोचते । स नः पर्षदति द्विषः
He who shines beyond the farthest distance, across the desert—may he lead us past our foes.
यो विश्वाभि विपश्यति भुवना सं च पश्यति । स नः पर्षदति द्विषः
He who sees all things with insight, who beholds the worlds together—may he lead us past our foes.
यो अस्य पारे रजसः शुक्रो अग्निरजायत । स नः पर्षदति द्विषः
He, the bright Agni, who was born on the far side of this expanse—may he lead us past our foes.
वैश्वानरो न ऊतय आ प्र यातु परावतः । अग्निर्नः सुष्टुतीरुप
May the blessings of Vaiśvānara come to us from afar; may Agni turn towards our praise.
वैश्वानरो न आगमदिमं यज्ञं सजूरुप । अग्निरुक्थेष्वंहसु
May Vaiśvānara come to this sacrifice, accompanied; may Agni be present in our hymns and offerings.
वैश्वानरोऽङ्गिरसां स्तोममुक्थं च चाकॢपत्। ऐषु द्युम्नं स्वर्यमत्
Vaiśvānara accepted the praise and hymn of the Angirases; among them may he grant glory and sovereignty.
ऋतावानं वैश्वानरमृतस्य ज्योतिषस्पतिम् । अजस्रं घर्ममीमहे
We seek Vaiśvānara, the upholder of order, lord of the light of truth, the unfailing warmth.
स विश्वा प्रति चाकॢप ऋतूंरुत्सृजते वशी । यज्ञस्य वय उत्तिरन्
He has fulfilled all the seasons, the master releases them; we, the offspring of the sacrifice, rise up.
अग्निः परेषु धामसु कामो भूतस्य भव्यस्य । सम्रादेको वि राजति
Agni, in distant realms, is the desire of what has been and what will be; the one sovereign shines forth alone.
उप प्रागात्सहस्राक्षो युक्त्वा शपथो रथम् । शप्तारमन्विच्छन् मम वृक इवाविमतो गृहम्
The thousand-eyed one approached, having yoked the oath to his chariot, seeking the curser of mine, like a wolf tracking the lair of the unprotected.
परि णो वृङ्ग्धि शपथ ह्रदमग्निरिवा दहन् । शप्तारमत्र नो जहि दिवो वृक्षमिवाशनिः
Turn away from us, O oath, as fire burns up a pool; strike down here the curser of ours, as lightning strikes a tree.
यो नः शपादशपतः शपतो यश्च नः शपात्। शुने पेष्ट्रमिवावक्षामं तं प्रत्यस्यामि मृत्यवे
Whoever curses us, or whom we have cursed, and whoever curses us from a curse—I cast him down to death, like a rotten branch to the dog.
सिंहे व्याघ्र उत या पृदाकौ त्विषिरग्नौ ब्राह्मणे सूर्ये या । इन्द्रं या देवी सुभगा जजान सा न ऐतु वर्चसा संविदाना
The brilliance that is in the lion, the tiger, and the spotted hyena, in the flashing fire, in the priest, in the sun—may that divine, gracious power which bore Indra come to us, united with glory.
या हस्तिनि द्वीपिनि या हिरण्ये त्विषिरप्सु गोषु या पुरुषेषु । इन्द्रं या देवी सुभगा जजान सा न ऐतु वर्चसा संविदाना
She who is in the elephant, in the two-tusked one, in gold, in brightness, in the waters, in cows, and in men—she, the gracious goddess who bore Indra, may she come to us, united with radiance.
रथे अक्षेष्वृषभस्य वाजे वाते पर्जन्ये वरुणस्य शुष्मे । इन्द्रं या देवी सुभगा जजान सा न ऐतु वर्चसा संविदाना
She who is in the chariot, in the wheels, in the bull, in strength, in the wind, in the rain, in the might of Varuṇa—she, the gracious goddess who bore Indra, may she come to us, united with radiance.
राजन्ये दुन्दुभावायतायामश्वस्य वाजे पुरुषस्य मायौ । इन्द्रं या देवी सुभगा जजान सा न ऐतु वर्चसा संविदाना
She who is in the king, in the drum, in the measure of length, in the horse, in strength, in the man, in skill—she, the gracious goddess who bore Indra, may she come to us, united with radiance.
यशो हविर्वर्धतामिन्द्रजूतं सहस्रवीर्यं सुभृतं सहस्कृतम् । प्रसर्स्राणमनु दीर्घाय चक्षसे हविष्मन्तं मा वर्धय ज्येष्ठतातये
May glory, the offering, increase, inspired by Indra—of a thousandfold might, well-sustained, accomplished—spreading forth for long vision; do not increase the offering for the sake of seniority.
अछा न इन्द्रं यशसं यशोभिर्यशस्विनं नमसाना विधेम । स नो रास्व राष्ट्रमिन्द्रजूतं तस्य ते रातौ यशसः स्याम
To Indra, the glorious, with glories, the glorious one, we offer worship with reverence; grant us, O Indra, a kingdom inspired by you; in your granting of glory, may we be of glory.
यशा इन्द्रो यशा अग्निर्यशाः सोमो अजायत । यशा विश्वस्य भूतस्य अहमस्मि यशस्तमः
By glory Indra, by glory Agni, by glory Soma was born; by glory of all beings, I am the most glorious.
अभयं द्यावापृथिवी इहास्तु नोऽभयं सोमः सविता नः कृणोतु । अभयं नोऽस्तूर्वन्तरिक्षं सप्तऋषीणां च हविषाभयं नो अस्तु
May safety be here for us from heaven and earth; may Soma and Savitṛ grant us safety; may the midspace be safe for us; with the offering of the Seven Sages, may safety be for us.
अस्मै ग्रामाय प्रदिशश्चतस्र ऊर्जं सुभूतं स्वस्ति सविता नः कृणोतु । अशत्र्विन्द्रो अभयं नः कृणोत्वन्यत्र राज्ञामभि यातु मन्युः
For this village, for the four directions, may Savitṛ grant us abundant strength and well-being; may Indra, without enemies, grant us safety; let the anger of kings go elsewhere.
अनमित्रं नो अधरादनमित्रं न उत्तरात्। इन्द्रानमित्रं नः पश्चादनमित्रं पुरस्कृधि
Let there be no enemy for us from below, nor any enemy from above; O Indra, let there be no enemy for us from behind, nor any enemy in front.
6.41 मनसे चेतसे धिय आकूतय उत चित्तये । मत्यै श्रुताय चक्षसे विधेम हविषा वयम्
For mind, for thought, for understanding, for intention, and for awareness; for wisdom, for hearing, for sight, we offer worship with an offering.
अपानाय व्यानाय प्राणाय भूरिधायसे । सरस्वत्या उरुव्यचे विधेम हविषा वयम्
For exhalation, for inhalation, for breath, for abundant nourishment; to Sarasvatī of wide expanse, we offer worship with an offering.
मा नो हासिषुर्ऋषयो दैव्या ये तनूपा ये नस्तन्वस्तनूजाः । अमर्त्या मर्त्यामभि नः सचध्वमायुर्धत्त प्रतरं जीवसे नः
May the seers not abandon us—those divine, those who protect the body, those who are born of our bodies; O immortals, join with mortals for us, grant us a span of life, a crossing for living.
6.42 अव ज्यामिव धन्वनो मन्युं तनोमि ते हृदः । यथा संमनसौ भूत्वा सखायाविव सचावहै
Like loosening the bowstring, I release your anger from the heart; so that, being of one mind, we may act together as friends.
सखायाविव सचावहा अव मन्युं तनोमि ते । अधस्ते अश्मनो मन्युमुपास्यामसि यो गुरुः
As friends, let us act together; I release your anger; beneath the stone, we lay down the anger that is heavy.
अभि तिष्ठामि ते मन्युं पार्ष्ण्या प्रपदेन च । यथावशो न वादिषो मम चित्तमुपायसि
I stand over your anger with my heel and with the sole of my foot; so that you may not speak against me, bring my mind under your control.
6.43 अयं दर्भो विमन्युकः स्वाय चारणाय च । मन्योर्विमन्युकस्यायं मन्युशमन उच्यते
This sacred grass is free from anger, fit for good conduct; this is called the pacifier of anger, for one who is free from anger.
