These three earths exist, and among them the ground is the highest. Upon them, I have gathered the medicine from their skin.
You are the best among medicines, the most excellent among herbs. Like Soma among the nights, like Varuna among the gods.
Radiant, unconquered, you desire to nourish; you nourish. You are also those that strengthen the hair, and those that promote its growth.
Dark-flowing, the tawny ones, the splendid-winged, wearing water, rise up to the sky. They have returned from the seat of order; at first, with ghee, they spread out the earth.
Make the herbs full of milk, O waters, auspicious when you move, O Maruts with golden breasts. There, you fill strength and good will, where, O Maruts, you pour honey for men.
The Maruts have lifted up the rain, which fills all dwellings. It moves, like a girl weaving with her spindle, like a wife for her husband.
She has flowed, the waters have flowed by day and night. I call upon the divine waters, with noble intent.
The waters, active in their work, release themselves for guidance. They quickly act for benefit.
By the impulse of the divine Savitar, let humans perform their work. May the waters and herbs be auspicious for us.
From the Himalayas they flow, meeting together in the river. The divine waters have given me that medicine shining in the heart.
Whatever shines in my eyes, in my heels, and in the soles of my feet, let the waters remove all that, O healers, with excellent healing.
Mistresses of the rivers, queens of the streams, all you rivers who dwell, give us that medicine, and with it we shall enjoy you.
Those five and fifty that gather against my mind, let all of them perish from here, like speech that is disregarded.
Those seven and seventy that gather against my neck, let all of them perish from here, like speech that is disregarded.
Those nine and ninety that gather against my shoulders, let all of them perish from here, like speech that is disregarded.
Release me from evil, O master, be gracious to us. Place the evil in the world of happiness, far removed.
Whoever does not remove our evil, him we shall remove, O you. Let the evil follow another path, let it fall upon another.
Let the thousand-eyed immortal cast it elsewhere from us. Let it go to the one we hate; let it reach the one who hates us, destroy him.
If, impelled by the gods or by desire, the pigeon, as a messenger of Nirṛti, has come here, then let us offer worship and make expiation; may there be well-being for our two-footed and four-footed beings.
May the pigeon, sent by the gods, be auspicious for us and bring no harm; may the divine bird not bring misfortune to our home. May Agni, the priest, accept our offering; may the winged missile turn away from us.
May the winged missile not harm us; let the bird make its place in the fire-altar. May there be well-being for our cattle and for our people; let not the gods, nor the pigeon, injure us here.
With a hymn, drive away the pigeon; I urge it away. Rejoicing, let us lead the cow around. Let us entice away the steps of misfortune, leaving them behind, and set forth on the path of strength and nourishment.
Let Agni forgive this for us, let the cow return to us. Among the gods, you have won fame; who would dare to assail this one?
He who first reached the descent, seeking out the many paths; he who rules over the two-footed and the four-footed— to him, to Yama, to Death, let there be homage.
May that winged missile fall elsewhere; if the owl speaks, let it be in vain; or if the pigeon makes its mark in the fire, let it be fruitless.
Whatever messengers of Nirṛti, sent or unsent, have come to our house— let there be no trace left by the pigeon or the owl.
May this fall here without enmity, may this settle here for heroic strength. Speak away, as if turning away, follow the path of departure. As in Yama’s house you did not see the living, so here do not look upon us.
The gods prepared this barley, mixed with honey, on the stone of Sarasvatī. Indra, the lord of ploughing, was present, the mighty one with a hundred powers; the Maruts, the generous, were the ploughmen.
That intoxication of yours, wild and unkempt, by which you make a man laugh— let other forests be far from you; you, O śamī tree with a hundred branches, grow forth.
O great-leaved, lovely śamī, grown strong with rain, guardian of truth, be gracious to our hair, as a mother to her children.
