या शशाप शपनेन याघं मूरमादधे । या रसस्य हरणाय जातमारेभे तोकमत्तु सा
She who cursed with a curse, who brought harm or madness, who was born to steal the sap— let her eat her own offspring.
पुत्रमत्तु यातुधानीः स्वसारमुत नप्त्यम् । अधा मिथो विकेश्यो वि घ्नतां यातुधान्यो वि तृह्यन्तामराय्यः
Let the sorceress eat her own son, her sister, and her niece; then let the wild-haired ones destroy each other, let the sorceresses perish, let the enemies waste away.
अभीवर्तेन मणिना येनेन्द्रो अभिवावृधे । तेनास्मान् ब्रह्मणस्पतेऽभि राष्ट्राय वर्धय
With the victorious amulet by which Indra grew strong, with that, O Brahmaṇaspati, make us grow for sovereignty.
अभिवृत्य सपत्नान् अभि या नो अरातयः । अभि पृतन्यन्तं तिष्ठाभि यो नो दुरस्यति
Having overcome our rivals, and those who are our enemies, stand firm against those who contend with us, against whoever seeks to harm us.
अभि त्वा देवः सविताभि षोमो अवीवृधत्। अभि त्वा विश्वा भूतान्यभीवर्तो यथाससि
The god Savitṛ has strengthened you, Soma has strengthened you; all beings have strengthened you, as you are the victorious one.
अभीवर्तो अभिभवः सपत्नक्षयणो मणिः । राष्ट्राय मह्यं बध्यतां सपत्नेभ्यः पराभुवे
Let the victorious, overpowering, rival-destroying amulet be bound for sovereignty for me, for the defeat of my rivals.
उदसौ सूर्यो अगादुदिदं मामकं वचः । यथाहं शत्रुहोऽसान्यसपत्नः सपत्नहा
The sun has risen, and my utterance has emerged; may I become an enemy-slayer, without rivals, destroyer of adversaries.
सपत्नक्षयणो वृषाभिरष्ट्रो विषासहिः । यथाहमेषां वीराणां विराजानि जनस्य च
May I be a bull, a ruler, one who conquers poison, who brings destruction to rivals; may I shine among these heroes and among the people.
विश्वे देवा वसवो रक्षतेममुतादित्या जागृत यूयमस्मिन् । मेमं सनाभिरुत वान्यनाभिर्मेमं प्रापत्पौरुषेयो वधो यः
May all the gods, Vasus, protect this one; may the Ādityas awaken for him. May neither those of the same lineage nor others bring upon him the death meant for men.
ये वो देवाः पितरो ये च पुत्राः सचेतसो मे शृणुतेदमुक्तम् । सर्वेभ्यो वः परि ददाम्येतं स्वस्त्येनं जरसे वहाथ
O gods, ancestors, and sons, may you who are conscious hear this spoken word of mine. To all of you I offer this for well-being; carry him safely to old age.
ये देवा दिवि ष्ठ ये पृथिव्यां ये अन्तरिक्ष ओषधीषु पशुष्वप्स्वन्तः । ते कृणुत जरसमायुरस्मै शतमन्यान् परि वृणक्तु मृत्यून्
You gods who dwell in heaven, on earth, in the atmosphere, among plants, animals, and waters—grant him long life and vigor; let him escape a hundred deaths.
येषां प्रयाजा उत वानुयाजा हुतभागा अहुतादश्च देवाः । येषां वः पञ्च प्रदिशो विभक्तास्तान् वो अस्मै सत्रसदः कृणोमि
Those whose preliminary and concluding offerings, share of oblations, and even unoffered portions belong to the gods; whose five regions are divided—those assembly-seats I appoint for him.
आशानामाशापालेभ्यश्चतुर्भ्यो अमृतेभ्यः । इदं भूतस्याध्यक्षेभ्यो विधेम हविषा वयम्
To the four guardians of hope and to the immortal ones, to the overseers of existence, we offer this oblation.
य आशानामाशापालाश्चत्वार स्थन देवाः । ते नो निर्ऋत्याः पाशेभ्यो मुञ्चतांहसोअंहसः
You four gods who are guardians of hope, may you release us from the snares of destruction and from harm.
अस्रामस्त्वा हविषा यजाम्यश्लोणस्त्वा घृतेन जुहोमि । य आशानामाशापालस्तुरीयो देवः स नः सुभूतमेह वक्षत्
I worship you with oblation; I offer you clarified butter. May the fourth god, guardian of hope, grant us excellent existence.
स्वस्ति मात्र उत पित्रे नो अस्तु स्वस्ति गोभ्यो जगते पुरुषेभ्यः । विश्वं सुभूतं सुविदत्रं नो अस्तु ज्योगेव दृशेम सूर्यम्
May well-being be for mother and father, for cows, for the world, and for men. May all be prosperous and auspicious for us; may we see the sun as long as we live.
इदं जनासो विदथ महद्ब्रह्म वदिष्यति । न तत्पृथिव्यां नो दिवि येन प्राणन्ति वीरुधः
O people, know this: the great Brahman will speak. There is nothing on earth or in heaven by which plants breathe.
अन्तरिक्ष आसां स्थाम श्रान्तसदामिव । आस्थानमस्य भूतस्य विदुष्टद्वेधसो न वा
The atmosphere is their abode, as if for those weary and resting. The seat of this being is known to the wise creator, or perhaps not.
यद्रोदसी रेजमाने भूमिश्च निरतक्षतम् । आर्द्रं तदद्य सर्वदा समुद्रस्येव श्रोत्याः
When the two worlds, earth and sky, are agitated, and the earth is measured out, then today and always it is moist, like the waters of the ocean.
विश्वमन्यामभीवार तदन्यस्यामधि श्रितम् । दिवे च विश्ववेदसे पृथिव्यै चाकरं नमः
All is enveloped by another, and upon another is it established. To heaven, the all-knowing, and to earth, I offer reverence.
हिरण्यवर्णाः शुचयः पावका यासु जातः सविता यास्वग्निः । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Golden-hued, pure, and radiant are those waters in which Savitṛ was born, in which Agni was born; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
यासां राजा वरुणो याति मध्ये सत्यानृते अवपश्यन् जनानाम् । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Among them King Varuṇa moves, discerning truth and falsehood among people; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
यासां देवा दिवि कृण्वन्ति भक्षं या अन्तरिक्षे बहुधा भवन्ति । या अग्निं गर्भं दधिरे सुवर्णास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
Those waters in which the gods in heaven make their food, which exist in many forms in the atmosphere; those waters that bear Agni as their embryo, may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
शिवेन मा चक्षुषा पश्यतापः शिवया तन्वोप स्पृशत त्वचं मे । घृतश्चुतः शुचयो याः पावकास्ता न आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु
With auspicious sight may you look upon me, waters; with auspicious touch may you touch my skin. Pure, radiant, and clarified-butter-flowing are those waters; may they be auspicious and gentle for us.
इयं वीरुन् मधुजाता मधुना त्वा खनामसि । मधोरधि प्रजातासि सा नो मधुमतस्कृधि
This is the honey-born Viru; with honey we dig you up. You are born from honey; make us full of honeyed sweetness.
जिह्वाया अग्रे मधु मे जिह्वामूले मधूलकम् । ममेदह क्रतावसो मम चित्तमुपायसि
At the tip of my tongue is honey, at the root of my tongue is honeyed sap. Let my words be pleasing; may you draw my mind to yourself.
मधुमन् मे निक्रमणं मधुमन् मे परायणम् । वाचा वदामि मधुमद्भूयासं मधुसंदृशः
May my approach be honey-sweet, may my departure be honey-sweet. With speech I speak; may I become honey-sweet, one who is seen as honeyed.
मधोरस्मि मधुतरो मदुघान् मधुमत्तरः । मामित्किल त्वं वनाः शाखां मधुमतीमिव
I am of honey, more honeyed than honey, most honeyed among the honeyed. Do not, like a branch heavy with honey, break me off, O forest.
परि त्वा परितत्नुनेक्षुणागामविद्विषे । यथा मां कमिन्यसो यथा मन् नापगा असः
Around you I wrap sweet cane, for the one who comes without hatred. So that women may desire me, so that men may not turn away from me.
यदाबध्नन् दाक्षायणा हिरण्यं शतानीकाय सुमनस्यमानाः । तत्ते बध्नाम्यायुषे वर्चसे बलाय दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदाय
When the Daksha-born ones, with joyful minds, bound the gold for the hundredfold-bannered one, I bind this for you—for life, for brilliance, for strength, for long years, for a hundred autumns.
