With the fierce form of the lion, you are invoked to consume all who threaten, and with the tiger’s might, to drive away your enemies. As the sole bull, a companion of Indra, may your life be long; let your foes be subdued and abundance flow into your home. We turn our thoughts to Agni, the first and the wise, the Pāñcajanya, whom people kindle in many ways. Entering every household, we seek his presence, praying that he may free us from all sin. As you, Jātavedas, carry our offerings and arrange the sacrifice with understanding, bring us the favor of the gods and release us from sin. We call to Agni, whom people approach with the best offerings and invoke through many acts. He is the destroyer of demons, the increaser of sacrifice, the one who receives the clarified butter. May he deliver us from sin. We call upon Agni, Jātavedas, well-born and all-pervading Vaiśvānara, the faithful carrier of our offerings—may he release us from sin. By Agni’s might, the seers kindled their strength; the powerful subdued the demon forces; and Indra conquered the Paṇis with fire. May this Agni release us from sin. It is by him that the gods found immortality, created the sweet plants, and attained the radiant sun. May he free us from all faults. In Agni’s domain shines all that is, all that is born and yet to be born. To this Agni, ever praised and sought for help, we call—may he release us from sin. Now we honor Indra, ever victorious, the slayer of Vṛtra, to whom our hymns have come. He who answers the call of the worshipper and does good—may he release us from sin. Indra, mighty among the mighty, strong-armed, who shattered the Dānavas’ strength, conquered the rivers, and brought forth the cows—may he free us from sin. He is the bull among men, knower of light, whose manliness is proclaimed by the stones, whose sacrifice is most delightful to the seven priests; may he release us from sin. To him belong the strong, the bulls, the sprinklers; to him the singers of light are devoted. For him is the pure Soma pressed, adorned with sacred utterance—may he release us from sin. The Soma-offerers seek his favor, invoke him as the archer in battle, and in him the hymn finds rest and strength—may he release us from sin. He was first born for the performance of deeds; his power was recognized from the beginning. By him, the uplifted thunderbolt struck down the serpent—may he release us from sin. He leads armies in battle, unites the strong and the weak. Seeking help, we praise and call upon Indra—may he release us from sin. We honor the deeds of Vāyu and Savitṛ, as far as their power extends. You, who protect the paths and have become the guardians of all—may you both release us from sin. Your measured distances form the boundaries of the worlds, and by you the region between earth and sky is filled. None can surpass your approach—may you both release us from sin. At your command, O radiant one, people settle; when you rise and set, O brilliant one, Vāyu and Savitṛ, you protect the worlds—may you both release us from sin. Drive away all evil and demons, O Vāyu and Savitṛ; destroy the sorcerers. Together, you bestow strength and vigor—may you both release us from sin. May Savitṛ and Vāyu grant us wealth and abundance, bestow skill and good fortune upon our bodies, and remove all misfortune from here—may you both release us from sin. May you gladden us with your great favor and mighty assistance; direct towards us the flow of your bounty—may you both release us from sin. The highest blessings of you two are established in the home; we praise you, god Savitṛ and Vāyu—may you both release us from sin. We honor Heaven and Earth, mighty and bountiful, conscious and stretching across unmeasured distances. You are the firm foundation of riches—release us from sin. Greatly expanded, divine and blessed, you are the basis of prosperity, O Heaven and Earth; be kindly disposed toward us—release us from sin. Unwearied, possessing excellent warmth, vast and deep, worthy of reverence by the wise, Heaven and Earth, be kindly disposed toward us—release us from sin. You bear the immortal, the offerings, the flowing streams, and humankind; Heaven and Earth, be kindly disposed—release us from sin. You bear the cows and the forest trees, within whom all beings abide; Heaven and Earth, be kindly disposed—release us from sin. You are satisfied with the libation and ghee, and by you, without nectar, nothing is possible; Heaven and Earth, be kindly disposed—release us from sin. Whatever griefs or wrongs have come from man, not from the gods, we praise Heaven and Earth, seeking help and calling upon you—release us from sin. We call upon the Maruts; may they speak on our behalf, grant us strength and victory. Like swift horses harnessed for help, may they release us from sin. The Maruts, who always distribute the inexhaustible, who pour sap into the plants, born of Pṛśni, we set before us—may they release us from sin. The milk of cows, the sap of plants, the speed of swift horses—all these the wise ones inspire; may the Maruts be gracious and release us from sin. They carry waters from ocean to sky, and from sky they send them forth upon the earth; those Maruts who rule with the waters—may they release us from sin. They are satisfied with libation and ghee, and join the birds with fat; those Maruts who make it rain—may they release us from sin. If any fault has come by your wind, or by the gods, or by divine ordinance, you, O givers of wealth, are the rulers of expiation—may you release us from sin. Fierce-faced, renowned, and mighty, the Marut host is strong in battle and formidable; we praise the Maruts, seeking help, and call upon you—may you release us from sin. We honor Bhava and Sharva; we recognize all that belongs to you, whatever shines forth in this region. You are the lords of all that has two feet and four—may you release us from sin. Whatever is near or far, you know it all, you who hold the bow; you are the lords of all that has two feet and four—may you release us from sin. A thousand-eyed, slayers of Vṛtra, we call you here, praising you even from afar, mighty ones; you are the lords of all that has two feet and four—may you release us from sin. Wherever you two go together, in the midst of the many, your rule is spread among the people; you are the lords of all that has two feet and four—may you release us from sin.
