In the vastness between earth and sky, in the heavens above, and among all who walk the world, the Ashvins—divine twin horsemen—are invoked to bestow their manly vigor. Those wise ones who have measured the Ashvins’ wondrous powers are called to heed the voice of the sage Kaṇva, who sings their praise. For the Ashvins, a hot libation is poured, rich in sweet Soma and honey, offered with deep reverence. It is this very drink that once awakened their awareness of Vṛtra, the ancient foe. All that the Ashvins have empowered—be it in the waters, the forests, or among the healing herbs—is called upon for protection, to shield the devotee with their manifold strength. O Nāsatyas, whatever you have accomplished as helpers and healers, your divine deeds are not reached by mere thought; you come to those who offer with devotion. Now the sage, recognizing your glory, pours out the sweetest Soma, the sacred libation, as Atharvan once did. Ashvins, mount your swiftly-turning chariot, for these hymns, like the sky, remain steadfast and true to you. Whatever invocations or words are offered today, may you be mindful of Kaṇva’s desire. Whether it was Kakṣīvant, Vyashva the seer, Dīrghatamas, or Prithī, son of Vena, who called upon you in their homes, may these ancient prayers bring you to us now. Come as guardians and protectors, Ashvins, preserving the world and our bodies, bringing blessings of offspring and descendants. Whether you ride with Indra in a single chariot, dwell with Vāyu, join the Ādityas and the Ṛbhus, or stand in the mighty strides of Viṣṇu, your presence is sought. Today, whatever strength or aid is needed—be it for victory in battle or the well-being of Turvaṇa—may the best help of the Ashvins be granted. These offerings, these pressed Somas, are set for you, enjoyed among the Kaṇvas and Turvaśa, your favored ones. Whatever remedy lies near or far, O Nāsatyas, let it bring protection, joy, and shelter, even for the humble calf. With the goddess, the divine speech, the praises for the Ashvins are spoken forth, spreading thought and bounty among mortals. O Dawn, awaken! Awaken, Ashvins, and you who bring grace to sacrifice, rise for the glory and exhilaration of the day. When Dawn advances with her light, joining the Sun, the Ashvins’ chariot moves along its path, arriving at the gathering of men. As the Soma flows like nourishing milk, and as hymns resound, the worshippers step forward, seeking your presence, Ashvins—for glory, fame, heroism, shelter, skill, and wisdom. Whenever you dwell in the father’s womb, with thoughts or with kindly hymns, be mindful of those who call. Today, your broad and swift chariot is summoned, Ashvins—the chariot that carries radiant Surya, generous and long-lived among the gods. You, divine sons of heaven, shine with splendor, delighting in your powers, drawn by swift horses and bearing treasures. Who today will offer you the chosen oblation, Ashvins, for help or enjoyment of the Soma, with songs of praise and reverence for ancient truth? With your golden, many-formed chariot, come to this sacrifice, O Nāsatyas; drink the sweet Soma and grant treasures to the one who honors you. Come from heaven and earth, riding your well-fashioned golden chariot. Let nothing hinder your arrival when the ancient center is offered to you. Grant us, O wondrous ones, abundant wealth and many heroes in both realms. When your praise is sung, people gather seeking your favor and blessing. Here, with your united thoughts, let good fortune and reward come to us. May you bring prosperity to the worshipper, fulfilling heartfelt wishes by your grace. Let the herbs, the sky, and the waters be sweet for us; let the atmosphere and the lord of the field be sweet, so that we may move forward unharmed on this path. This is your work, Ashvins—bulls of heaven, lords of earth and sky. I praise you with a thousand hymns, and all who strive for the cow. Come together, drink, and overcome all hostility.
