What is there that Indra has not accomplished? His manliness and heroic deeds echo through all generations, and the fame of the slayer of Vritra resounds everywhere. In every battle, Indra is invoked as the true lord, the bringer of wealth, the leader whom men call upon from every direction. Indra, wondrous and mighty, holds the thunderbolt in his hand; praised and formidable, he destroys foes and scatters cattle, horses, and chariots for his devotees. He grants us prizes that cannot be defeated. The ancient drinkers, skillful and harmonious, sing together in his praise, and even the Rudras extol this primordial one. Indra’s strength and heroic power have grown through the exhilarating, pressed Soma. Today, as in times past, the mighty ones celebrate his greatness. Therefore, Indra, we approach you with our desires for greatness, letting our offerings rise up and ascend to you. The prayers exalt you with their praises, even as you increase day by day, O destroyer of foes. For the inspired song, the two steeds are harnessed to the broad-yoked chariot, drawn by Indra and yoked by words. Yet, we also choose Agni as our messenger, the priest who knows all things, wise and worthy for this sacrifice. With offerings, we constantly invoke Agni, the lord of the people, bearer of oblations, beloved by many. Agni, bring the gods here, born upon the well-laid altar; you are the priest, worthy of praise. Shining and dispelling darkness, Agni is kindled, powerful and honored. Like a bull or a horse bearing the gods, Agni is sought by those with offerings. We kindle you, mighty Agni, with mighty ones, and you shine greatly. We invoke Agni for help with songs, radiant and brilliant, renowned among men, a shield for good guidance. Come, Agni, with the other fires; as priest, we choose you. May the prepared, offering-bearing seat invite you, most worthy, to sit. To you, son of strength, Angiras, the ladles move at the sacrifice; we seek Agni, ancient child of nourishment, with ghee-hair, in the rites. May these songs, O bountiful one, increase you; bright, pure, and wise, they praise you with hymns. Honored by a thousand sages, Agni spreads like the ocean; his greatness is true, and we praise his power in the sacrifice, in the sovereignty of the wise. May Indra grant us all offerings in every assembly; let prayers and libations approach, O slayer of Vritra, supreme and most praised. You are the foremost giver of wealth, established in truth and lordship; we choose you, mighty one, for the greatness of the powerful son. O Indra, you are victorious in all contests; destroyer of curses, creator of universal triumph, you surpass all hostile challengers. Your force, swift and powerful, moves across the earth like a child to its mother; with your wrath, you shatter opponents when you conquer Vritra. From here, I invoke for you the ageless, unerring leader, swift victor, guide, charioteer, unconquered, mighty Tugrya. He is king of peoples, chariot-rider without blemish, conqueror of all battles, eldest, and slayer of Vritra, whom I praise. Adorn Indra, the wise, for help, whose power is unmatched; the thunderbolt is placed in his hand, radiant as the sun in the vast sky. Indra’s strength is vast, his power and wisdom great; his thunderbolt, most excellent, is sharpened by intellect. Heaven grows strong through Indra’s manliness, earth increases his fame, and waters and mountains urge him onward. Vishnu, mighty, praises him; Mitra and Varuna honor him; the host rejoices, following Marut. For his wrath, all peoples bow, just as rivers bow to the ocean. His vigor and brilliance, when brought together, envelop the heavens like a covering. With the hundred-knotted thunderbolt, Indra split the head of the resisting Vritra. He is the greatest among beings, born fierce and heroic; newly born, he immediately destroys enemies, and all powers rejoice in him. Increasing in might and abundant strength, he brings fear to the enemy for the Dasa; he protected and defended, and all gifts are offered in the intoxications. They fill you with wisdom, abundant and twice, when these powers become threefold; the sweetest, sweeter than sweet, release joy, O intoxicating one, join honey with honey. Even as sages praise you as victorious in battle, strengthen your firm body, O mighty one; let not the evil-minded or sorrowful harm you. With you, we gain victory in battles, seeing many acts of war; your weapons are urged with words, your strength sharpened with prayer. You place that in the lower and upper realms, in which you dwell in the home; establish the mother, the moving one, and stir many treasures. Praise the one who dwells in the heights, who moves on many paths, who is mighty, most powerful among the powerful. By his strength, he reveals vast energy, extending the measure of the earth. These hymns, born of the great heaven, raise a shout for Indra and for Agni, bringers of light. The lord of the great clan rules in splendor; even the swift one, full of power, surpasses all with his austerity.
