May Indra, the mighty slayer of foes and the most energetic among the gods, make us fearless on every side. He is the one whose power is renowned—who, accompanied by the pressed Soma, drinks deeply, as the wise have always proclaimed. With his immense strength, he shatters fortresses and delights in the flowing Soma, his favorite offering. Indra moves with the unstoppable force of a generous beast or a roaming elephant, setting his course wherever he wills. None can restrain him at the sacred Soma pressing; in his greatness, he advances by his own might. Fierce and unyielding, ever ready for battle, he is steadfast and resolute. If this generous lord hears the singer’s praise, may he not turn away, but remain with us, not drawn elsewhere. We, having prepared and pressed the Soma, gather around you, O Slayer of Vṛtra, as worshippers encircle the sacred altar strewn with grass, awaiting your presence at the outpouring of the pure drink. O Indra, the wealthy one, men sing to you at the Soma pressing, their voices rising in hymns. When, longing for the taste of the pressed Soma, will you come to our dwelling like a bellowing bull returning to his herd? With the Kaṇvas, O Mighty Indra, we seek you—the bold-bannered, the giver of a thousand gifts, the tawny-hued, the wise—swiftly, for the wealth of cattle and prosperity. All beings, as if yearning for the sun, partake in Indra’s bounty. His treasures, born of strength, are distributed among us as our share. Praise to Indra, the generous, free from malice, whose gifts are always auspicious. He never withholds the desires of those who serve him, inspiring the mind toward generosity. O Sun, O Aditya, your greatness is renowned; truly, you are great among gods. By your fame, O Sun, you are exalted; you pervade all as the undeceivable, radiant light, the very priest of the gods. Upwards rise sweet, intoxicating hymns—songs for the ever-victorious, the wealthy, the inexhaustible Indra—urging him on as chariots race for the prize. Like the Kaṇvas and Bhṛgus, like the radiant Sun, eager worshippers glorify Indra with shining hymns, their voices resounding in joy. For the one who seeks Indra’s favor, his portion is increased, like wealth for the deserving. Indra does not harm those who worship with Soma; rather, even their enemies are compelled to respect the Soma-offerer. Place the beautiful, well-composed hymn among the devoted, for with Indra’s presence, even former obstacles are overcome. Thus, Indra is heroic and steadfast, ever generous in mind. His bounty surpasses all other givers; even in misfortune, Indra’s presence is with us. Do not grow weary, O Lord of Strength, but take delight in the pressed, cattle-rich Soma. The words of the worshipper, truthful and abundant, are like a ripe branch heavy with fruit. Indra’s powers and aids are ever ready for those who help others, always available to the worshipper. His praiseworthy hymn and song are offered so that Indra may drink the Soma with joy. We praise your exhilaration, O mighty Indra—victorious in battle, creator of worlds, stone-armed, and radiant. By your discernment, you brought forth light for Ayu and Manu; you shine upon the sacrificial grass, delighted by our offerings. Today, as in days past, singers praise you, O Mind; day by day, the wives of the mighty, the victorious waters, join in the song. Sing to Indra, the much-invoked and much-praised; summon him with strong words. He, whose vast strength upholds heaven and earth, who by his bull-like power supports the mountains, rivers, and shining waters, reigns alone. Indra, the slayer of foes, grants victory and fame to his devotees. We call upon you, O Indra, the unprecedented one, bearing your mighty presence as our support. In contests, we invoke you, the wondrous, the powerful, the bold. We choose you as our steadfast friend and guide, O Indra, for help and protection. He who brought us forth long ago, our friend Indra, is praised for his aid. Indra, the true lord with tawny horses, delights in his people. He brings cattle and horses in abundance—a hundred gifts for the singers. Let us sing for Indra, the wise, the great, the mighty, the doer of righteousness, the prosperous and discerning. Indra, all-powerful, made the sun shine and is the maker and god of all creation, the great one. Radiant with light, Indra ascends to the luminous region of heaven; the gods have chosen him for their friendship. Again, let us sing to the much-invoked, much-praised Indra, summoning him with strong words. His vast strength upholds all creation, and by his might, he alone reigns and slays the enemies, granting victory and fame. Now, let us fulfill these worlds—Indra and all the gods together. Indra, with the Adityas, shapes our sacrifices, our bodies, and our offspring. With the Adityas and Maruts, Indra protects our bodies. The gods, having slain the demons and conquered, preserved divinity for themselves and for us. With the goddesses, I have led the sun to face us; they have revealed nourishing food all around. With this god-given prize, may we win, may we rejoice, a hundred strong, with good sons and happiness.
