Indra, the mighty one, advances like a warrior leading a hundred armies, his strength overwhelming all opposition. For his devotees, he strikes down their adversaries, ensuring their safety and victory. His gifts, rich in delight, pour forth as abundantly as rivers cascading from a mountain, blessing the faithful with prosperity. Therefore, let us sing praises to the illustrious Indra, the granter of wealth, to fulfill our deepest desires. He bestows the most coveted treasures upon those who press the Soma and sing his glory, magnifying their offerings as if in thousands. Indra’s arsenal is vast and unconquerable, brimming with countless weapons. When the pressed Soma flows without stint among the generous, his bounty, like a mountain’s abundance, is shared freely. We, having pressed the Soma, gather around you, O slayer of Vṛtra, as waters encircle the sacrificial grass. At the outpourings of the pure Soma, the singers assemble, their voices raised in devotion. Men call to you during the pressing, O giver of wealth, with hymns and longing hearts. When will you, Indra, come to your home, drawn by the pressed Soma, like a roaring bull returning to its herd? With the Kanvas, we seek you, O mighty one, whose banner stands firm, whose generosity is as boundless as your thousand gifts, whose form is ever-changing. Swiftly may we receive the cattle, the wealth you bestow. Who truly knows this Indra, who arrives at the pressing, accompanied by his retinue, his mind set on the sacrifice? This is he who shatters the forts of his foes with his might, delighting in the strength of the Soma. Like a wild beast, an elephant, he sets his course in many places, unstoppable at the pressing; none can hinder his coming, O mighty one. He is fierce, unopposed, steadfast, ever ready for battle. If, O generous one, you hear the singer’s call, let not Indra’s attention be drawn elsewhere; let his favor rest upon us. All the hosts and their allies have fashioned Indra for kingship, endowing him with wisdom, excellence, and the best of gifts. He is mighty, powerful, strong, and energetic. The celebratory shouts resound together for Indra to drink the Soma. When he, the lord of light, is strengthened and resolute, he advances with his bands, his might undiminished. As the spokes bow to the rim, so do the singers bow their voices to the ram. May your swift and gracious attendants, O powerful one, come swiftly to your ears with their songs. We call upon generous, mighty Indra, upholder of the sacrifice, whose powers are unconquered. Greatest in song and worthy of worship, may the wielder of the bolt make all our paths auspicious and bring us wealth. Whatever strength you have drawn from the lords of light among the gods, O Indra, increase it for this singer and for all those who, like you, are seated on the sacred grass. To whom you have given the horse, the cow, the unfailing share, O Indra, grant that to the sacrificer, the Soma-presser, the generous giver. Do not bestow it upon the miser. Indra has grown mightier with the exhilaration of Soma and the company of men, ever the slayer of Vṛtra, ever powerful. We call upon him in great battle and contest; may he enter into us for victory. For you, Indra, are the heroic warrior, the granter of abundant spoils. You are the strength of the weak and the provider for the worshipper. Much wealth is yours to give to the Soma-presser. When the prizes are called forth for the bold, when wealth is set for the contest, harness your exhilarated steeds, O Indra. Whom will you strike? To whom will you grant riches? May those riches come to us. With joy, grant us herds of cattle, you of unwavering intent. Gather for us hundreds upon hundreds, on every side—seize the wealth, shower us with treasure, and bring it here. Rejoice in the pressed Soma, O mighty one; be present for strength and bounty. We know you as the giver of many gifts; we send forth our desires to you—therefore, be our protector. Your people, O Indra, prosper in every contest for prizes. Among them, you are manifest, noble, wise, and undeceived—may you know us and bring your blessings here. To the one who shapes beautiful forms for our aid, as a cow yields milk to the milker, we offer our oblations day by day. Come to our libations, O Soma-drinker; here is the exhilaration of the generous, O god. May we know the full extent of your gracious favors; do not pass us by—come here. For our protection, guard the most vigorous, the glorious, the ever-watchful. Indra, drink the Soma, O hundred-powered one. The powers that are yours among the five peoples, O Indra, I choose for you. Grant us great fame and unconquerable glory; by your might, we shall overcome. Come to us from near and far, O mighty one; from your world, O stone-armed Indra, come here. Indra sits in great dread, unwavering and firm, the most active of all. May Indra show us mercy; may no harm come to us from behind—may good be before us. May Indra make us fearless in every direction, the slayer of enemies, ever active. Who knows him, who, accompanied by pressed Soma, drinks as the wise have set forth? He who shatters fortresses with his strength, delighting in the pressed, flowing Soma. Like a giving beast, like an elephant, he moves in many places; no one restrains you at the Soma pressing—great Indra, you move by your might. He is fierce, unrestrained, firm, and ever prepared for battle. If the generous one hears the singer’s praise, let not Indra’s favor be diverted. We, having pressed Soma, gather around you, O Slayer of Vṛtra, like waters encircling the sacrificial grass at the outpourings of the purifier, as worshippers. Men, O wealthy one, sing to you at the pressing of Soma, with hymns. When, longing for the pressed drink, will you come to the house, O Indra, like a bellowing bull to his herd? With the Kaṇvas, O mighty one, we seek you—the bold-bannered, the thousand-gifted, the tawny-hued, the wise—swiftly, for the wealth of cattle. All, as if yearning for the sun, partake of Indra’s bounty. The treasures born of his strength are distributed by portion. Praise the giver of wealth, free from malice; Indra’s bounties are auspicious. He does not withhold the desire of the one who arranges for him, inspiring generosity. You are great, O Sun, O Aditya, your greatness is renowned. Truly, O god, you are great.
