With a heart full of reverence, I approach the victorious one, seeking the presence of the ever-triumphant. I pray that your mind does not cling to me as a cow follows her calf, or as water unerringly finds its path. My prayer is sharpened, as is my strength and power, and my unaging royal might is keen; may I, as priest, help secure victory. Let me be equal among rulers, their peer in sovereignty, strength, and power. With this offering, I sever the strength of our enemies. May those who stand against our generous lord be humbled beneath us; with prayer, I diminish our foes and lead our people ever upward. For those whom I serve as priest, let their force be sharper than the axe, keener than fire, and mightier than Indra’s thunderbolt. May I be joined with their weapons, increase their heroic kingdom, and ensure their royal power remains ageless and victorious. May all the gods protect their hearts and minds. Let the neighing of Maghavan’s victorious horses rise up, let the battle cries of the triumphant resound with raised banners. May the gods, Indra at their head, and the Maruts, advance with our army. Go forth and win, O warriors! Let your arms be mighty, your arrows sharp, your bows strong, your weapons deadly; let your robust arms strike down the weak. O arrow, released and sharpened by prayer, fly far and wide; conquer our enemies, strike down their best, and let none among them harm me. O priest, this is your origin, the source from which you were born and shone. Knowing this, O Agni, ascend and increase our wealth. Agni, come to us, speak on our behalf, be gracious and grant us your favor, O lord of the people, our bestower of wealth. May Aryaman, Bhaga, and Bṛhaspati grant us their favor; may the gracious goddesses bestow wealth upon me. We call for help upon King Soma, upon Agni with our songs, upon Āditya, Viṣṇu, Sūrya, and Bṛhaspati, the priest. Agni, you, with the other fires, increase our prayers and sacrifices; urge on wealth for us, for giving and receiving. Here, we invoke you, Indra and Vāyu, who come when called. May all people in the assembly be well-disposed toward us, and may both the generous and the seekers of gifts favor us. Urge Aryaman, Bṛhaspati, and Indra to give; and also Vāta, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, and Savitṛ, bestower of strength. At the outpouring of strength, may we unite, and may all these worlds be within us. Let the wise one inspire the generous to give, and grant us wealth abounding in heroes. May the five regions yield for me, may the vast earth yield according to my strength; may I attain all my desires in mind and heart. May my speech be as rich as a herd of cows, may you grant me brilliance; let Vāyu restrain from all sides, and may Tvaṣṭṛ bestow prosperity upon me. To all the fires that dwell in the waters, that are found in obstacles, in people, in stones, and that have entered plants and trees—to all those fires, we offer this oblation. To the fire within Soma, cows, birds, wild creatures, and all beings on two or four legs—to all those fires, we make this offering. To the fire that rides with Indra in his chariot, to Vaiśvānara, the all-conquering, whom I invoke in battles, the victorious one—to all those fires, this offering is made. To the god known as the fulfiller of all desires, the giver and receiver, wise, mighty, and unconquered—to all those fires, this offering is made. Whom as Hotar the thirteen worlds and the five races of men have recognized for brilliance, fame, and eloquence—to all those fires, this offering is made. To the fire for cooked food, for clarified butter, for the one who claims Soma, for the wise, for Vaiśvānara the eldest—to all those fires, this offering is made. To those who move through heaven, earth, and the atmosphere, who follow the lightning, who dwell in the directions and in the wind—to all those fires, this offering is made. We invoke Savitṛ of the golden hands, Indra, Bṛhaspati, Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, all the gods, and the Aṅgirasas; may they pacify this flesh-eating Agni. May Agni, the flesh-eater, be appeased; may the one who seeks out people be pacified; and may the all-conquering flesh-eater be soothed. The mountains, those with Soma on their backs, the waters, the broad rivers, the wind, Parjanya, and Agni—they have all pacified this flesh-eater. May radiant, elephant-like glory and great fame arise and spread from your bodies, O Ādityas; may all the gods, united with Aditi, grant this to me. Let Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra, and Rudra be aware; may all the gods, givers to all, grant me radiance. By that which made the elephant radiant, by which the king among men and in the waters became so, by which the gods first attained divinity—by that, O Agni, make me radiant today, endow me with that glory. O Jātavedas, whatever brilliance becomes great for you at the offering, as much as the sun’s or the mighty elephant’s, may the Aśvins, adorned with lotus garlands, grant me that same radiance. As far as the four directions extend, as far as vision reaches, so far may my vigor and strength be, shining with the radiance of the elephant’s hand. Among animals, the elephant is foremost in strength; with a portion of his radiance, I anoint myself. By that strength which made you mighty, may we drive away all harm; this we send far away from you, elsewhere, far off. May a male embryo enter your womb, like an arrow into a quiver; may a heroic son be born here, your ten-month child. Give birth to a male child, and may another follow after him; be the mother of sons, both those already born and those yet to be. Whatever auspicious seeds the bulls generate, with those may you obtain a son; be a fruitful mother-cow. I impart to you the power of creation; may an embryo enter your womb. Obtain a son, woman, who will bring you joy—be to him as a mother should.
