We, your devoted friends, O Indra, raise our voices in full praise, knowing you as the generous bestower of wealth. Recognize our devotion, mighty one, and stand with us. Let not any enemy—whether near at hand or hurling words from afar—overcome us in battle; may our resolve ever rest in you. For you are our broad and steadfast armor, the foremost in combat, the mighty destroyer of obstacles. With you as our ally, we speak forth with confidence. It is for the slaying of obstacles and the overcoming of hostile armies that we set you, O Indra, into motion. By our songs may your mind and vision, O Indra of a hundred powers, be drawn toward us. With every hymn we invoke all your names, O mighty one, so that foes may be vanquished. With your hundredfold strength, O much-praised Indra, we magnify you, the upholder of peoples. To you, so often invoked, we call for victory over obstacles and for the gaining of strength in battle. Be triumphant in every contest, O Indra of a hundred powers; we call upon you to strike down all barriers. In the pursuit of glory, in the winning of battles, and in contests for fame, be present in our midst, O Indra, in every struggle. Protect for us the invigorating, glorious, and wakeful Soma, O Indra, you of inexhaustible might. The powers that are yours among the five peoples, those I call upon for you, O Indra. Accept from us great fame and unconquerable glory; with your strength, may we cross over every difficulty. Come to us, mighty one, whether you are near or far; wherever your realm extends, O stone-armed Indra, come swiftly to our side. Indra stands above all fear and does not waver; he is steadfast among peoples. May Indra show us mercy; let no harm reach us from behind, and may good fortune always lie ahead. May Indra make us fearless from every direction; let him, active among peoples, defeat all our enemies. In the house of the Sun, we bring forth speech for the great, hymns for Indra; for even now, as seekers find treasure, so does praise bear fruit among the generous, not among those who withhold honor. Far away, Indra, are the horse and the cow for you, and far is the barley, O lord of wealth. Teach us from the highest, O unconstrained friend; to you we sing as your devoted companions. O Indra, doer of many deeds, your wealth, like power itself, is guarded on every side; therefore, gather it and bring it here, overcoming all, and do not let the wishes of your singer go unfulfilled. With these shining days, with these drops of Soma, dispelling ignorance, O Ashvins, with cows, and with Indra, may we strike down our foes. United and free from hatred, may we attain abundance. Together with Indra, may we gain wealth and prosperity; together with prizes, delights, and shining companions. Together with the divine, with surpassing strength and heroic vigor, with foremost cows and horses, may we attain all blessings. Indra, those exhilarations have gladdened you—those powers of the bull, those Somas, O lord of good, in your slaying of Vritra. For the worshipper, you struck down ten unassailable Vritras; for the one who offers, you cast down thousands. Battle after battle you approach with boldness; city after city you destroy with your might. With worthy friendship, even in distant places, you have cast down Namuci, the master of illusion. You slew Karandja and Parṇaya with your most powerful weapon on Atithigva’s path. You shattered a hundred cities of the Vaṅgṛdas, drove away their defenders, and cleared the way for Ṛjiśvan. You confronted those two, the people’s kings, with their ten brothers and Suśravas, the renowned. Sixty thousand and ninety-nine famed ones you struck down with the wheel of your chariot, O subduer of the difficult. You aided Suśravas with your protections and Tūrvayāṇa with your safeguards. You granted life to Kutsa and Atithigva, to the great youthful king, to the one undefeated in battle. Those who are your friends, O Indra, divine guardians, are most auspicious and harmonious. We will ever praise you; with you as our ally, may we, blessed with heroic sons, hold long life and secure passage through all dangers. To you, the bull among bulls, pressed among the pressed, I pour forth the Soma for you to drink. Be satisfied, partake of this exhilaration. Let not the foolish or the envious harm you; let not the mockers oppress you, and may you never be overcome by those who hate the sacred utterance. Here, with the guardians of the cows, may they gladden you for great reward—drink as a bull drinks from a lake. Sing forth to the lord of the cows, to Indra, as is fitting, for he is the son of truth, the true lord. The bay steeds have been released, the ruddy ones, upon the sacred grass, where we assemble together. For Indra, the cows have milked pure sweetness for the wielder of the bolt, when he discovered it in the hidden place. Come to us, Indra, eager for the Soma, called to drink the sacred libation. Come with your two bays, O stone-splitter. The priest has sat down as the ritualist, spreading the sacred grass in order; the morning pressings are yoked. These hymns, bearers of prayer, are composed for you—sit upon the sacred grass, O hero, and enjoy the foremost offering. Rejoice with us in the libations, O slayer of Vritra, in these praises, O Indra, lover of song, in these hymns. The mothers of the Soma-drinker cherish you, O lord of strength, as mothers cherish a calf. Delight yourself in the pressed Soma, for greatness and for your own might; do not cast aside your worshipper. Thus, with devotion and praise, with offerings and hymns, we call to you, Indra—protector, champion, and friend—may you ever be present among us, granting strength, victory, and abundance.
