Indra, the mighty and radiant lord, shattered the cunning of Vṛtra and, with his invincible strength, destroyed the deceivers who opposed him. With a thunderous blow, he split open the cave that held the cows captive, revealing those who had been hidden away and restoring what was lost. As the bringer of light, Indra fashioned the days themselves, wielding his weapons to conquer enemy hosts. For Manu, the great seer, he marked a sign and discovered the sacred flame, preparing for the mighty battle yet to come. Praised in countless hymns, Indra entered the very seat of strength, bestowing vigor and abundant gifts upon humanity. It was he who awakened inspired thoughts in the singer, granting radiant and pure insight to those who praised him. The deeds of Indra are many and renowned throughout the worlds. With his power, he crushed the wicked and overcame the Dasyus, using both strength and magic to protect the righteous. In his greatness, Indra forged a wide and open path for the gods, standing as the true lord and protector of men. Within the house of Vivasvat, wise ones sing hymns recounting his glorious deeds. Indra, the all-conquering and worthy, giver of strength, together with the shining goddesses, established the earth and the heavens. The wise rejoice in him, their hearts filled with gratitude. He set in place the waters, the sun, and the earth, securing the abundant cow and golden wealth for his people after defeating the Dasyus. In doing so, he brought forth the Aryan color, establishing order and prosperity. Indra set in motion the plants, the waters, the trees, and the very midspace itself. He broke the power of his foes, silenced their voices, and tamed the arrogant, restoring harmony. Let us therefore call upon Indra, the generous giver, the foremost among men in contests for prize and strength. Fierce and attentive to our invocations in battle, he strikes down obstacles and secures victory and wealth for his devotees. The hymns rise up for the glory of Indra. Vasiṣṭha, the sage, leads the assembly in praise of him who, with his might, pervades all things and listens eagerly to our words. As the wise ones sing aloud, we approach Indra, born of the gods, seeking his guidance to lead us safely past the dangers of mortal life, for none knows his own lifespan. Indra, delighting in the hymns, yokes his searching chariot with his two bay steeds and approaches, mighty and undefeated. He splits apart earth and heaven, conquering obstacles with ease. Even the waters, swelling like cows, remain steadfast in truth as singers offer praise. Indra comes swiftly as the wind with his teams, granting abundant prizes by his insight. May the exhilarations of the soma pressing delight Indra, the mighty and bountiful hero, who alone among the gods shows favor to mortals. Let him rejoice in our offerings. So do the Vasiṣṭhas honor Indra, the thunderbolt-armed, with their hymns, praying that he grant them heroic strength, cattle, and unending protection. Swift and mighty, armed with the thunderbolt, the king and slayer of obstacles, drinker of soma, Indra yokes his two bays and comes joyfully to the midday pressing, ready to receive the offerings of his devotees. Again, the hymns rise for Indra’s glory, and Vasiṣṭha leads the assembly in praise of him who pervades all things and listens eagerly to our speech. We approach, seeking his protection in the face of life’s uncertainties. Indra, with his searching chariot and two bays, delights in our hymns, splitting earth and heaven and conquering all obstacles. The swelling waters, like cows, uphold truth as singers praise Indra. He comes as the wind with his teams, bestowing abundant prizes through his wisdom. May he be delighted by our offerings, for he alone among the gods shows special favor to mortals. The Vasiṣṭhas honor him with hymns, seeking heroic strength and cattle, and his constant blessings. Swift and powerful, Indra comes to the midday pressing, rejoicing with his thunderbolt in hand. We, relying on Indra as our support, call upon him as those who bear a heavy load call for help. In the contest for prizes, we invoke the wondrous and unprecedented one. We seek his aid in our labors, choosing Indra as our helper and friend, the one who cannot be overcome. He who has brought us prosperity in the past, we now praise as our steadfast friend. May Indra, lord of fine horses, the true master and ever-vigorous one, bring us cattle and horses. Let Maghavan grant a hundred gifts to the singers, rewarding their devotion. To the most mighty, the possessor of vast and renowned wealth, I offer my thoughts. His riches, hard to hold and abundant like water on a slope, are open to the energetic. For him, all desired things follow, just as waters flow downward for the sacrificial offerings. When Indra’s golden thunderbolt was unleashed upon the mountain, it shattered what could not be subdued. To this awe-inspiring lord, we offer worship, as the radiant dawn brings light for the journey. His domain, famous for its power, created a shining brilliance to guide the green ones. We, praised by many, move about in abundance, relying on Indra. None but he upholds our words, delighting in our speech as the earth supports all. Indra’s heroic power is vast. Let him grant the wish of this singer, fulfilling his desire. The sky and earth alike yield to his might. With his thunderbolt, Indra broke apart the great mountain, releasing the imprisoned waters so they could flow freely, and by his strength, he alone established all things. Like birds rising with loud voices from a cloud, the sounds of praise resound. The mountain-born, the strong, rejoice as they approach Bṛhaspati with their hymns. The Angiras, striving with cows, led Aryaman like Bhaga. Among people, as Mitra unites a couple, Bṛhaspati, grant us swift strength in contests. The sacrificial offerings, the guests, and the seers are precious and flawless. Bṛhaspati, breaking through the mountains, released the cows from their hollows, as one shakes barley from the stalks. He sprinkled honey, casting the hymn like a meteor from the sky into the womb of truth. Bṛhaspati, lifting from the stone, broke through the earth as one splits the skin from the udder. With light, he drove away darkness from the midspace, as wind blows fleece from the udder. Bṛhaspati scattered Vala’s cloud, freeing the cows as the wind disperses them. When Bṛhaspati, with fire and hymns, broke the stronghold of Vala, he took the concealed treasure, revealing the hidden wealth of the cows. Knowing their names, Bṛhaspati found the singers’ hidden abode. Like breaking an egg to free the bird within, he released the cows from the mountain by his power. Thus, the mighty deeds of Indra and Bṛhaspati, celebrated in hymns and remembered by the wise, continue to bless and protect those who honor them.
