Come, O Indra, lover of Soma, for we call you near! The Soma has been pressed, ready for your delight—come, drink it and be exhilarated. Widen your belly and receive this offering with your great strength; just as a father listens to his children, hear us as we call upon you. The vessel is brimming for you—Svāhā!—libation poured into the cup, strained and ready for your enjoyment. Your beloved ones have gathered together in joyful anticipation, eager for the intoxication of Soma. The sacred Somas, moving in auspicious circles, surround you, Indra. To you—the wondrous, unconquered one, who delights in strength and the exhilarating drink—we sing new praises, just as cows in their stalls call out to their calf. With our hymns, we glorify you, Indra. We seek you, resplendent as the sky, generous and wrapped in might, like a mountain overflowing with gifts. Rich in food and victorious, you possess a thousand treasures and swiftly bring cattle to your devotees. I approach that heroic power of yours, that ancient sacred knowledge by which you aided the Bhrigus in gaining wealth, and by which you helped Praskaṇva in times of need. O mighty Indra, with that same strength you set the great rivers in motion. Your power, O bull, is unmatched—your greatness never diminishes, and even the earths have not surpassed you. Your sweetest songs rise up, O Indra; unceasing streams of praise flow for the winner of wealth, like chariots racing for victory. Just as the Kaṇvas, the Bhṛgus, and the radiant Suns have done, so do the eager ones glorify you, Indra, with their hymns. The Priyamedhas have sung aloud in your honor. Indra, breaker of forts, drove away the Dāsa with your might, granting wealth and showing mercy, scattering foes. Inspired by our prayers, you grew in strength, filling both earth and sky with your bounty. For your powerful sacrifice, I send forth these words, adorned for immortality. Indra, you are the lord of human tribes, of the divine hosts, and of those who came before. You slew Vṛtra, shattering his cunning, and destroyed the deceivers with your might. You split open the cave and released the cows, making the hidden ones visible. Indra, bringer of light, you created the days, conquering the hosts with your weapons. You made the sign for Manu, the great seer, and found the flame for the mighty battle. Praised by hymns, you entered the seat of strength, bestowing manly vigor and countless gifts. You awakened these thoughts in the singer, granting radiant and pure insight. The great deeds of mighty Indra are many and renowned. With your power, you crushed the wicked and overcame the Dasyus with your strength and magic. In your greatness, you made a wide path for the gods, O true lord and protector of men. In the house of Vivasvat, the wise sing of your deeds with their hymns. All-conquering, worthy, and strong, you, Indra, giver of strength, together with the shining goddesses, established the earth and these heavens. The wise rejoice in you. You established the waters, the sun, and the earth. You secured the abundant cow, the golden wealth, after slaying the Dasyus, bringing forth the Aryan color. You set in motion the plants, the waters, the trees, and the midspace. You broke the power of your foes, silenced their voices, and tamed the arrogant. Let us call upon you, Indra, generous giver, foremost in contests for prize and strength. Fierce and attentive in battle, you strike down obstacles and win wealth for your devotees. The hymns have risen up for your glory; Vasiṣṭha, praise Indra in the assembly—he who with his might has pervaded all things, who listens eagerly to our words. I come with this sound, O Indra, god-born, as the wise sing aloud. Among people, none knows their own lifespan—may you lead us safely past these dangers. You have yoked your searching chariot with the two bays, approaching our hymns and delighting in them. Mighty Indra, you have split apart earth and heaven, conquering all obstacles, undefeated. Even the waters have swelled, like cows, unfailing in truth, as singers praise you, Indra. Come to us as the wind with your teams, for by your insight you grant us abundant rewards. May these exhilarations, O mighty Indra, delight you—so bountiful to the singer. You alone among the gods show favor to mortals—rejoice, hero, in this pressing. Thus do the Vasiṣṭhas honor you, Indra, mighty one with the thunderbolt-strong arm, with their hymns. May you, praised by us, grant us heroic strength and cattle, and always protect us with your blessings. Swift, armed with the thunderbolt, bull, mighty king, slayer of obstacles, drinker of Soma—having yoked your two bays, come, Indra, to the midday pressing to rejoice. We, bearing you as our support, call upon you, O unprecedented one, like those who carry a heavy load; in the contest for prizes, we invoke you, the wondrous one. We approach you for help in our work; may that strong, fierce one come to us. We have chosen you, Indra, as our helper and friend, the unassailable one. He who formerly brought us prosperity, him I now praise—Indra, our friend, for help. May he, the lord of fine horses, the true master, strong among peoples and ever vigorous, bring us cattle and horses. May Maghavan grant a hundred gifts to the singers. I offer my thought to the most mighty, the great, the possessor of vast wealth, whose power is true and whose strength is renowned. His difficult-to-hold riches, like water on a slope, are open for the energetic. Then, for you, all desired things follow, as waters flow downward for the sacrificial offerings. When on the mountain, Indra’s golden thunderbolt, unrestrained, was released, it shattered what could not be subdued. To him, the awe-inspiring, we offer reverence with worship, as the radiant dawn brings forth light for the journey. His domain, famed for its name and power, created a shining brilliance for the green ones to lead.
