Upon the vastness of Time, a full jar is set—Time, who manifests in countless forms before our eyes. It is he who moves and governs all the worlds, and for this, the wise call Time the highest heaven. Time alone has gathered up all realms, encircled them, and become both their father and their son. There is no radiance greater than his. From Time arose this heaven and this earth; within Time, all that has been and will be, and every action, finds its support. Time gave birth to all living beings; in his embrace, the sun burns brightly, all creatures dwell, and the gift of sight is bestowed. Mind and breath, even the very names by which beings are known, rest in Time. When he arrives, all creatures rejoice. Austerity, supremacy, and the gathered Brahman are found in Time, who is lord of all and fathered Prajapati. By his power, all things are impelled and born, and in him everything is established. Time himself, becoming Brahman, upholds the supreme lord. In the beginning, Time created all creatures and Prajapati; from him arose the self-born Kashyapa and the force of austerity. From Time, the waters flowed forth; from Time arose Brahman, austerity, and the directions. The sun rises and sets by Time’s order. By Time, the wind blows and the earth stands firm; even the great sky is founded in Time. Long ago, Time gave birth to what has been and what will be; from him came the Ṛc and Yajus verses. Time arranged the sacrifice, granting the gods their undiminishing share. In Time are established the Gandharvas, the Apsarases, and all the worlds. In him stand Aṅgiras and Atharvan, this world and the highest world, all blessed realms and their foundations. Having conquered all worlds with Brahman, Time, the supreme god, moves ever onward. Night after night, bearing the ever-journeying one, stands as a horse with fodder for him. May we, rejoicing in wealth and food, remain unharmed in our homes, O Agni. O Wind, may your arrow of wealth be yours alone—grant us your favor. May Agni, lord of the house, be with us morning and evening, bestowing good mind and riches, that we, your kindlers, may prosper in body and thrive for a hundred winters. Let me not be one who eats what is burnt behind. Homage to the food-giver, to the lord of food, to Rudra, to Agni. O assembly and its members, protect us. O Indra, much-invoked, you pervade all life; day by day, you stand like a horse with fodder, O Agni. From Yama’s world, you have arisen, O wise one, uniting mortals; alone you journey, measuring out sleep in the womb of the mighty. The binding one saw you first, before the coming of night, at the birth of day; then, in sleep, you arose, concealing your form from the healers. The great cow turned from the mighty to the gods, seeking greatness; to sleep, the thirty-three gods, lords of heaven, assigned lordship. Neither ancestors nor gods know this mystery, among whom the mutterer moves. Instructed by Varuṇa, men and Ādityas placed sleep in Trita for attainment. He whose cruel share the wicked divided, the good, with sleeplessness, attained blessed life. You are the delight in the highest bond, born from the mind of one who suffers. We know all your generations, O Sleep, lord here; protect us for fame, and drive our haters far away. As parts are joined, as hooves and debts are joined, so do we join together all evil dreams, O unlovely one. Kings, debtors, lepers, and all parts have joined; whatever evil dream is among us, let it be driven out, O sinless one. O embryo of the wives of the gods, hand of Yama, auspicious dream, may all that is mine and evil be driven away; let me not see the face of the owl or the black bird. We recognize you, O Dream; you are like a dream-horse, a body-horse—we drive you away. Cast away from us, our cattle, and our house all evil dreams, all that belongs to the gods or is dear to spirits. Let what belongs to the gods or spirits be released from us like a necklace. Remove all evil dreams and impurity, as one would remove nine gems; all evil dreams we send to the enemy. The offering of ghee, united with the gods, is increased for a year by the oblation. May our hearing, sight, and breath remain unbroken; may our lives and brilliance not be cut off. Let breath come to us and call upon us. We invoke breath. Brilliance fills the earth and atmosphere; Soma and Brihaspati bestow it. Heaven and earth gather brilliance; having received it, may we move upon the earth. The cows, seeking fame, approach the lord of cattle; having gained fame, may we walk the earth. Build cattle-pens, for your leaders are men; sew armor, broad and thick. Build strong iron fortresses; let not your drinking vessels be broken. With speech as mouth, hearing as ears, and mind, I offer the eye and the source of sacrifice. May the gods, well-disposed, come to this sacrifice spread by the All-Creator. Let all the priests of the gods, those fit for sacrifice, to whom the offering and share are given, come with their wives and rejoice in strength. Agni, you are the guardian of vows among gods and mortals, worthy of praise in sacrifice. If we have transgressed your vows, knowingly or unknowingly, may Agni and Soma restore us. We have walked the path of the gods, striving as we are able. Agni, the knower, is our priest and kindler, arranging the seasons for the ritual. Let speech be in my mouth, breath in my nostrils, sight in my eyes, hearing in my ears. May my hair remain ungreyed, my teeth unbroken, and great strength reside in my arms.
