As night gently retreats, she bids the dawn to come to us unharmed, and the radiant dawn, though she has no hands, shares out the day among us. In this sacred moment, the self expands: “I am ten thousand,” it proclaims. The eye, the ear, the breath—each is ten thousand. All that is, all that breathes and moves within, is ten thousand. The self is all, vast and immeasurable. With reverence, one takes hold of the divine, born from the impulse of Savitar, from the arms of the Ashvins, from the hands of Pushan. At the beginning, Desire arose—the first seed of mind. O Desire, united with the great Desire, born of one womb, bestow prosperity and wealth upon the worshipper. Desire, established with force and all-pervading, manifests in countless forms, a friend to friends, mighty in battles. Grant strength to the worshipper. For those longing from afar, for those seeking and undiminishing, hopes listen; with Desire, they generate their own light. Let Desire come to me, heart to heart; let the exhilaration or thought among these people come to me here. Whatever act is performed here, desiring Desire, is your offering. May all prosper for us, and may you accept this offering—svaha. Time, the mighty horse with seven rays, carries all. With a thousand eyes, ageless and powerful, he bears these beings. The wise ascend upon him; his wheels encompass all the worlds. This Time bears seven wheels, has seven mouths, his navel is immortal, his axis eternal. He moves all worlds; Time, the first god, advances. A full jar rests upon Time; he exists in many forms. He moves all these worlds, and is called the highest heaven. He alone has gathered all the worlds, has circled them, becoming both father and son to all. No brilliance surpasses his. Time generated heaven and earth. In Time, the past and future and all actions are established. Time created beings; in Time, the sun burns. In Time, all beings exist; in Time, the eye sees. Within Time is mind, breath, and the gathered name. By Time, all creatures rejoice at his arrival. In Time is austerity, supremacy, and the gathered Brahman. Time is lord of all, who became the father of Prajapati. By him, everything is impelled, born, and established. Time, having become Brahman, upholds the supreme lord. Time created the creatures; at the beginning, Time created Prajapati. The self-born Kashyapa arose from Time, and austerity from Time. From Time arose the waters, Brahman, austerity, and the directions. By Time the sun rises and sets. By Time the wind blows, and the earth stands firm. The great sky is established in Time. Long ago, Time gave birth to what has been and what will be, as a son. From Time arose the Ṛc verses, from Time was born the Yajus. Time set the sacrifice in order, granting the gods their undiminishing share. In Time are established the Gandharvas and Apsarases; in Time, all worlds are fixed. In Time stand Aṅgiras and Atharvan; this world and the highest world, and the blessed worlds and their supports, all are upheld by Time. Having conquered all worlds with Brahman, Time, that supreme god, moves onward. Night after night, bearing the one who journeys unceasingly, stands like a horse with fodder for him. Rejoicing in wealth and food, may we not, O Agni, suffer harm in our dwelling. O Wind, your arrow of wealth—let it be yours. With it, grant us favor; rejoicing in wealth and food, may we not, O Agni, suffer harm. Evening by evening, may Agni, lord of the house, be ours; morning by morning, the giver of good mind. O giver of wealth, become bestower of riches; may we, your kindlers, prosper in body. Morning by morning, may Agni, lord of the house, be ours; evening by evening, the giver of good mind. O giver of wealth, become bestower of riches; may we, your kindlers, thrive for a hundred winters. May I not become one who eats what has been burnt behind. Homage to the food-giver, to the lord of food, to Rudra, to Agni. O assembly, protect my assembly; and you who are members, protect the assembly. O Indra, much-invoked, you pervade all life; day by day, bearing the measured portion, you stand like a horse with fodder, O Agni. From the world of Yama you have arisen, O wise one, delighting, uniting mortals. Alone, you journey with your chariot, measuring out sleep in the womb of the mighty one. At first, the binding one saw you in the beginning, before night, at the birth of day. Then, in the midst of sleep, you arose, concealing your form from the healers. The great cow turned back from the mighty ones to the gods, desiring greatness. To that sleep, the thirty-three gods, lords of the heavens, assigned lordship. Neither the ancestors nor the gods know this, among whom the mutterer moves in between. The men, the Ādityas, instructed by Varuṇa, placed sleep in Trita for attainment. He whose cruel portion the wicked divided, the good, with sleeplessness, obtained blessed life. You are the delight in the highest bond, born from the mind of the one who suffers. We know all your generations from before; we know you, O Sleep, who are lord here. O glorious one, protect us for fame here, drive away far from us those who hate. As parts are joined, as a hoof is joined, as a debt is joined, so do we join together all evil dreams, O unlovely one. The kings have joined, the debtors have joined, the lepers have joined, the parts have joined; whatever evil dream is among us, let us drive out the evil dream, O sinless one. O embryo of the wives of the gods, O hand of Yama, O auspicious dream, may that which is mine and evil be driven away; let me not meet the face of the owl or the black bird. We recognize you, O Dream, just so; you are like a dream-horse, like a body-horse. I drive you away. Cast away from us, from our cattle and from our house, whatever evil dream, whatever belongs to the gods, whatever is dear to the spirits. Let that which belongs to the gods, that which is dear to the spirits, be released from us like a necklace. Remove from us all evil dreams, all impurity, as one would remove nine gems. All evil dreams we drive away to the enemy. Thus, in the rhythm of night and dawn, in the vastness of Time, in the cycles of desire, sleep, and dream, the sacred order of the worlds is upheld, and the worshipper seeks prosperity, strength, and peace.
