United with the lord of cattle, may we dwell together in prosperity, nourished in this cattle-pen, where life and abundance multiply. Let us call upon Indra, the merchant, to come and lead us, driving away all enmity and thieves, for he is the lord and giver of wealth. May the many divine paths that move between heaven and earth favor us, blessing us with milk and ghee, so that, having made our purchases, we may return home laden with riches. With longing, we offer ghee and fuel to Agni, seeking speed and strength. As long as we are able, we honor the Brahman and send forth our prayers to the goddess, hoping for a hundredfold gain. Agni, may you consider this place our refuge, guiding us along distant paths. May our trading and selling be fruitful, our exchanges successful, and may you and your divine companion accept our offerings, blessing all our endeavors, both begun and completed. With the wealth by which we trade, O gods, may our fortune grow and never diminish; Agni, destroyer of foes, seat the gods with our offerings. May Indra, radiant among gods, place his favor in our wealth, along with Prajapati, Savitar, Soma, and Agni. To you, O Hotar, O Vaiśvānara, we come with reverence, praising you. Watch over us—our offspring, ourselves, our cattle, and our lives. Jātavedas, may all our possessions remain firm and steady, like a horse standing strong. Let us rejoice together in abundance, unharmed by our neighbors, O Agni. Each morning, we call to Agni, Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa, the Aśvins, Bhaga, Pūṣan, Brahmaṇaspati, Soma, and Rudra. We invoke Bhaga, mighty and victorious son of Aditi, who distributes fortune; even the oppressed, the swift, and the king acknowledge Bhaga as the giver of shares. O Bhaga, guide us forward, bestower of blessings, grant us your favor. Provide us with cows and horses, and let us stand as men among men. May we be fortunate now, at the day’s beginning, and throughout its course; as the generous Sun rises, may we remain in the gods’ favor. Let Bhaga alone be our portion, making us fortunate, and to you, Bhaga, we call with all our hearts—may you be our leader. The dawns, rich in sacrifice, bow low, like swift horses on their pure path; may they bring Bhaga, the giver of wealth, near to us. May these auspicious dawns, full of horses, cows, and sons, always rise for us, milking ghee from every side, and ever protecting us with well-being. The wise prepare their ploughs and yokes, each thoughtfully seeking the gods’ favor. Let us yoke the ploughs, lay out the yokes, and sow the seed in the prepared furrow. May the furrow, the share, the plough, and the team be for us; may the nearest clods yield ripe grain. With a strong and well-made plough, let us open the earth, turning up wealth as the team moves forward, the ploughshare and goad ready. Let Indra take possession of Sītā, and Pūṣan protect her well. May she, rich in milk, yield abundant produce for us, season after season. Let the ploughers strike the earth with good furrows, the laborers follow well, and the pleased plough, yoke, and fruitful plants bring us their bounty. May the teams, men, and plough prosper; may the straps be firm and the goad raised high. O plough and yoke, be pleased with us; whatever milk you have stored in the sky, pour it down upon this field. O Sītā, we honor you—be gracious and fruitful. As you show us kindness, so may you yield abundance. Sītā, anointed with ghee and honey, approved by all gods and Maruts, pour forth your milk for us—strong, rich in ghee, and ever increasing. Now, we dig up the potent herb, strongest of all plants, by which one drives away a rival wife and finds a husband. O Uttānaparṇī, honored by the gods and full of power, drive away my co-wife, making my husband belong to me alone. Since she has not claimed his name nor delights in him, let us send my co-wife far away, to a distant place. I am the superior, exalted among women; my co-wife is below, the lowest of the low. Yet both of us are victorious—together, let us overcome my rival. I approach you, the victorious one, more powerful still; let your mind not follow after me, as a cow follows her calf or water its path. My prayer is sharpened—my strength, power, and royal might are sharpened. As their priest, may I be victorious. May I be equal in sovereignty, strength, and power, and with this offering, cut off the arms of my enemies. Let those who oppose our generous lord walk low, beneath us; with prayer, I diminish my foes and raise my people high. Sharper than axe, fire, or Indra’s thunderbolt are those for whom I am priest. May I be united with their weapons, increase their heroic kingdom, and may their royal power be ageless and victorious, the gods guarding their minds. Let the victorious horses of Maghavan neigh, let the cries of the triumphant resound with banners raised; may the gods, Indra at their head, and the Maruts, advance with the army. Go forth and win, O men; may your arms be mighty, your arrows sharp, your bows strong, your weapons deadly. Let your strength strike down the weak. Released, fly far, O arrow sharpened by prayer—conquer the enemy, advance, strike down their best, and let none harm me. And finally, O priest, remember your divine origin, from which you were born and shone forth. Knowing this, O Agni, rise and increase our wealth.
