Darbha, you are invoked as the destroyer of rivals, the one who burns away the enemy’s malice and brings sovereignty like a precious jewel. I take you into myself as the very drink that nourishes the body. Your origin is wondrous: when the ocean roared in unison with the storm and lightning, a golden drop emerged from that mighty tumult, and from that drop, you, darbha grass, were born. Turning now to the audumbara jewel, I seek abundance through its power. May the Creator grant me the increase of all cattle within my care, blessing my cattle-pen with prosperity. May the sacred household fire, the lord of cattle, be ours; may the audumbara, the bull among jewels, release its bounty upon us. Let the one who bears fruit and brings nourishment dwell in my home, and by the radiance of the audumbara, may the Creator bestow abundance upon me. I gather the fullness of all foods and juices, whether from two-footed or four-footed beings, bearing the audumbara jewel as my talisman. I have drawn together the wealth of cattle, both four-footed and two-footed, and all the grain in my fields; may Brihaspati and Savitar grant me the milk of cattle and the essence of plants. May I become the lord of cattle, and may the lord of abundance establish his riches within me. Let the audumbara jewel grant me wealth, coming to me with offspring and prosperity. Inspired by Indra, may this jewel bring me strength and splendor. O divine jewel, destroyer of rivals, bring us wealth and the means to gain more riches; grant us fullness of food and an increase of cows. As you, O tree, were born in the beginning together with abundance, so may Sarasvati grant me the wealth that grows. Let Sarasvati bring me riches—milk, grain, and all abundance—may Sinivali draw it near, together with this audumbara jewel. You are the bull among jewels, the lord of all treasures; in you, the lord of abundance was born, and all prizes and riches dwell. O audumbara, conquer for us, drive away misfortune, enmity, and hunger. You stand as the leader of the village, rising as chief and anointed; sprinkle me with your splendor. You are vigor, so may vigor dwell in me; you are wealth, so grant me wealth. You are abundance itself—unite me with prosperity. Householder, make me the lord of the home; O audumbara, place riches among us and grant us heroic abundance. For the increase of wealth, I release you. This heroic audumbara jewel is bound for the hero; may it bring us sweet alliances and all-heroic wealth. Now, to the darbha grass again: you are a hundred-jointed, difficult-to-move, thousand-leaved, and elevated plant, fierce among herbs. I bind you for long life. Your hairs are never cut, nor are you struck upon the breast; with your unbroken leaves, darbha, you grant protection. Your tuft is in heaven, O herb, and you are firmly established upon earth; with you, thousand-jointed one, we increase the span of life. You have overstepped three realms in heaven and three here on earth; with you, I subdue the tongue and words of the ill-willed. You are enduring, and I am powerful; together, let us overcome our rivals. Endure for us every hostility and the onslaught of battle; endure the ill-willed, and turn many to be friendly toward me. With darbha, born of the gods and standing as the eternal pillar in heaven, may I always gain food and sustenance for all people. Make me dear, O darbha, to the Brahmin, the royal, the Shudra, the Arya, and to all whom we desire, to all who see me. The one who, at birth, made the earth firm, who propped up the atmosphere and sky—whom, when carried, evil could not touch—may this darbha, along with Varuna and the shining one, protect us. Darbha, rival-slayer, hundred-jointed, powerful, first among herbs—may you protect us on every side, helping us conquer in battle and conflict. You are thousand-valued, hundred-jointed, rich in milk, the fire of the waters, the king of plants—may you shield us everywhere; the divine jewel binds us to long life. Smeared with ghee, sweet, rich in milk, supporter of the earth, unfailing and immovable—darbha rises up, driving away rivals and casting down the lowly, with great power. You enter the earth with strength and sit beautifully on the altar; the sages bore you as a purifier—purify us from all evils. Sharp king, poison-conqueror, slayer of demons, beloved by all people—this fierce strength of the gods I bind for you, for long life and well-being. With darbha, perform heroic deeds; bearing darbha, fear not—surpass others in brilliance, shining in all four directions like the sun. You are Jangida, the protector—let Jangida guard all that is ours, both two-footed and four-footed. Whatever is greedy, in numbers of fifty-three or a hundred, whether done or undone—let Jangida, the very essence of energy, remove them all. The essence, the artificial sound, the seven essences—let Jangida drive away every poison, missile, and evil, destroying them utterly. This indeed is a destroyer of witchcraft and of hostility; this powerful Jangida will carry us safely across the spans of life. May the greatness of Jangida protect us everywhere, with which he overcame both the spreading and the gathering, with strength and vigor. Having been pierced three times, the gods created it and fixed it upon the earth; the ancient Brāhmaṇas knew it as ‘Aṅgirā.’ No earlier or newer herbs surpass you; fierce Jangida, you repel, protect, and are most auspicious. Now, O Jangida of mighty power, be gracious; once, the fierce ones devoured, and Upendra gave strength. Fierce are you, O plant—Indra placed vigor within you; drive away all diseases, destroy the demons, O herb. Thus, through the power of darbha, audumbara, and jangida, may abundance, protection, and well-being fill our lives, as gifted by the divine.
