Once, there was a radiant gold, shining with the brilliance of the sun itself, the very treasure that the ancient Manu once sought for the sake of his descendants. This gold, sent forth in splendor by the moon, bestows longevity upon those who bear it. It is sought for long life, for brilliance, for vigor, and for strength, for it shines among people with an unmistakable golden luster. That which is known to King Varuṇa, that which the wise god Bṛhaspati knows, and that which mighty Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, understands—may all this knowledge become the source of your long life and radiance. May you be protected on all sides: let the mighty bull shield you with cows, and the strong one guard you with steeds. May Vāyu, the wind, shelter you with the sacred utterance, and Indra preserve you with his divine powers. Soma, the nourishing god, protects you with potent herbs; the Sun guards you with the stars; the Moon, who too has overcome Vṛtra, shields you from the dangers of water, and the Wind, ever-present, protects you with the very breath of life. All the worlds—three heavens, three earths, three atmospheres, and four great oceans—come together with the triple hymn and the triple waters. May these, with their triple forces, safeguard you on every side. There are three heavens, three oceans, three shining ones, and three realms of bliss; three of Mātariśvan and three of the Suns—these too are appointed as your guardians. With clarified butter I anoint you, O Agni, increasing your strength and radiance. May neither Agni, nor the Moon, nor the Sun, nor the breath of life itself, be harmed by those who deceive. May your breath, your downward breath, your vital force remain untouched by harm, while the resplendent, all-knowing gods hasten with divine speed to your aid. Breath unites with Agni, the Wind is joined to breath, and with this breath, the gods fashioned the Sun, who gazes in every direction. So, live, endowed with the life that grants longevity; do not succumb to death. Live with breath and with self, and do not fall under the dominion of mortality. Remember the treasure hidden by the gods, which Indra discovered by the divine paths. The waters themselves guarded this gold with threefold protections—may these triple forces shield you always. The thirty-three gods and their threefold powers, beloved and nestled within the waters, together with the gold set in this amulet, empower its wearer to perform heroic deeds. To the gods—eleven in the heavens, eleven in the atmosphere, and eleven upon the earth—let this offering be made, that they may accept it and grant their blessings. May we be made free from enemies, both before and behind. May Savitṛ protect me on the right, and the Lord of Power on the left. Let the Ādityas guard from the sky, the fires from the earth, Indra and Agni stand vigilant in front, and the Aśvins grant their shelter all around. Let Jātavedas protect from afar, and the creators of beings be my armor on every side. With all these protections, I bind this amulet upon you for long life and brilliance. This sacred grass I tie for the defeat of rivals, for burning the hearts of enemies. May it burn the hearts of foes, scorch their minds; O sacred grass, hard to overcome, burn and torment all who oppose. O darbha grass, scorch the enemies like the heated gharma, burn them, O radiant jewel; break the hearts of rivals, just as Indra shattered the strength of the hostile. Break, O darbha, the hearts of my rivals, O jewel; as the skin rises from the earth, so may their heads be cast down. Break my rivals, those who oppose me in battle, all who are hard to defeat—break my enemies, O jewel. Cut them down, O darbha—my rivals, those who stand against me in battle, all who are difficult to overcome. Sever them, slice them, crush them, pierce them—my rivals, my foes, all who challenge me—O jewel, let none stand. Strike down, grind down, obstruct, destroy, churn, compress, dry up, and burn my rivals, O darbha; let your power strike all who oppose me in battle, all who are hard to defeat, all my enemies—O jewel, let your force be relentless. O darbha, whose hundredfold old-age and death are like armor, whose protection is mighty—let that armor now shield this one, and by your strength, strike down the rivals. You have a hundred blades of protection, a thousand powers, and all the gods have entrusted you to old age as a steadfast support. You are called the armor of the gods, O darbha grass, the very Lord of Prayer. You are known as Indra’s armor, and you protect the realms. Thus, with the amulet and the sacred grass, with the blessings of the gods and the guardians of all directions, may you live long, shine brightly, and stand victorious over all that would oppose you.
