As dawn breaks, the earth rises and stands firm, bearing the weight of a thousand measures upon herself. May the homes established upon her, flowing with ghee, be pleasant and welcoming, and may every shelter here offer protection and comfort. With reverence, the earth is set up and its boundaries laid down, ensuring no harm comes to it. The fathers uphold this sacred pillar, and Yama is invoked to grant a peaceful resting place there. Agni, the sacred fire, is called upon not to consume the ritual bowl, for it is cherished by both the gods and those who partake of Soma. This vessel is reserved for the divine, that the immortal gods may rejoice in its contents. Atharvan, the ancient sage, once carried the full bowl for Indra, the victorious. In it, he apportioned the share for the doer of good, and therein the Soma flows, bestowing abundance upon all. Should any black bird, ant, serpent, or beast have touched the offering, Agni is invoked to render their influence harmless, as is Soma, which has entered the Brahman's food. Let the plants rich in milk, the milk itself, and the milk of the waters—may all these purifying milks cleanse together, bringing purity and well-being. May the women, not widowed, good wives, anoint with ointment and clarified butter. Free from tears and sickness, rich in treasures, may they ascend to the gathering, standing at the forefront of birth. Go forth together with the Fathers, with Yama, with your offerings and good deeds, to the highest heaven. Leaving behind all blame, return again to the setting, and let those of bright form accompany your body. Those who are the Fathers of our father, the grandfathers who dwell in the wide midspace, may their righteous guidance today shape our bodies according to their will. May the mist be auspicious, the dew fall gently, bringing coolness, refreshment, and delight. Even in the water of the frog, may there be well-being, and may the fire be appeased for him. Vivasvat, the wise, generous, and long-lived, is called upon to grant safety. May many heroes gather here, rich in cattle and horses, and may prosperity abide. May Vivasvat establish us in immortality; let death depart and the immortal remain. May he protect these men from old age, and let their vital breaths not go to Yama. The sage who upholds the midspace by his greatness, wise among the Fathers, is honored with offerings by the descendants of Viśvāmitra. May that Yama grant a safe crossing for life. Ascend to the highest heaven, O seers, without fear. Drinkers of Soma, this offering is made for you—we have reached the highest light. With great radiance, Agni shines forth as a signal, roaring between heaven and earth. Even at the ends of the sky, he rises, the great buffalo growing in the lap of the waters. In the sky, when the beautiful-winged one flies, those who search with the heart have seen you—the golden-winged messenger of Varuṇa, the swift bird, dwelling in Yama’s abode. Indra, bring us strength as a father to his sons. Teach us, much-invoked one, on this path, so that we may attain living light. The jars covered with cakes, which the gods placed, are prayed to be full of offering, sweet and overflowing with ghee. Grains are scattered, mixed with sesame, full of offering—may they be abundant and powerful, and may King Yama accept them. The tree is asked to give back what is placed within it, so that, as at the seat of Yama, one may sit and speak at the assembly. Jātavedas, seize and let your brilliance be strong; burn the body completely, and grant a world among the righteous. To the ancestors who have gone before, and those yet to come, may a stream of ghee flow, pouring out with a hundred streams. Ascend this wind, purified and shining brightly in your own home; go forth through the midst, do not turn back, to the world of the Fathers, the first here. Ascend to the mother, O Jātavedas, along the paths of the Fathers; together, ascend. O carrier of offerings, sent forth by the oblation, bear the sacrificer, yoked, to the world of the righteous. The gods, immortal through sacrifice, prepare the offering, the sacrificial cake, the ladles, and ritual implements. With these, proceed along the divine paths, by which sacrificers reach the heavenly world. Look upon the path of truth, O Angiras, the righteous way by which the virtuous go. With these paths, proceed to heaven, where the Adityas enjoy sweetness. Ascend to the third heaven and take your place there. Three splendid birds, guardians of the upper realm, are stationed on the ridge of heaven in the highest expanse. The heavenly worlds, filled with immortality, yield nourishment and strength to the sacrificer. Let the rivers flow together, let the winds unite, let the birds gather. May you increase this sacrifice; with a flowing offering, the oblation is made with words. May we protect this sacrifice and pour it forth; may you increase it; with a flowing offering, the oblation is made with words. Form by form, age by age, let all join and embrace the sacrifice. May the four directions increase it; with a flowing offering, the oblation is made with words. May the waters from the Himalayas, from the lakes, bring well-being. May the settling waters and the rainy waters bring well-being. May the waters from the deserts and marshes bring well-being. May the waters drawn by digging and those carried in jars bring well-being. The cloudless, deep waters, being drawn, are profound. Among healers, these waters are the most healing; let us invoke them. We have drunk of the celestial waters, of the streams of waters, at the gathering. May you become swift horses. These waters are auspicious, disease-removing. As satisfaction comes, so may they grant healing remedies. From heaven and earth, from the intermediate space, from the trees and herbs, wherever the sacred fire is distributed, praised, and welcomed, may it come to us. Agni’s greatness is found in waters, forests, herbs, animals, and the waters within. All these forms are gathered together; with them, Agni, come to us, giver of wealth, ever generous. Agni’s greatness among the gods is heavenly, his form entered among the ancestors. The prosperity he spreads among humans, may he grant us wealth. To the wise, the learned, the attentive, words and speech are offered for favor. Where there is fear, let there be safety; worship the gods, O Agni, and avert harm. The first offering that Atharvan made, that which was born, that which the bearer of the sacred fire prepared as an offering—this, the first, is invoked; may Agni, urged by these, carry the offering to Agni. Svaha.
