May Agni, the radiant one, endow me with his brilliance, and may Vishnu, the all-pervading, grant me intelligence. May all the gods together bestow wealth upon me, and may the sacred waters purify me with their flowing streams. Let Mitra and Varuna, the upholders of cosmic order, protect me, and may the shining Adityas increase my fame. Indra, king of the gods, grant me radiance, and Savitar, remover of darkness, take away old age from my hands. We remember the first mortal who departed this world, the one who first journeyed to Yama’s realm, where all people gather. To King Yama, we offer our oblation. O revered Fathers, come and return again; this sacrifice, sweet as honey, is prepared for you. Grant us good fortune and wealth in this world, and bestow upon us prosperity filled with heroic sons. May the sages—Kanva, Kakshivan, Purumidha, Agastya, Syavashva, Sobhari, Arcanana, Visvamitra, Jamadagni, Atri, Kasyapa, and Vamadeva—protect us. Let Visvamitra, Jamadagni, Vasishtha, Bharadvaja, Gotama, and Vamadeva guard us, and may Atri lead our assembly with devotion. May the well-praised Fathers be gracious to us. It is by the blessings of those pure ancestors that we have crossed over enemies, carrying ever-renewed life. Their blessings increase our offspring and wealth, and may we flourish in our homes. The Fathers anoint, adorn, and unite; they inspire resolve and bless with honeyed sweetness. The golden-hoofed ones seize the leaping bull among the cattle at the river’s breath. O Fathers, whatever is your Soma-offering and your sacred sign, join with that, for you are self-luminous. Wise ones, hear us here as we invoke you in assembly, bestowers of good guidance. The Atris, Angirases, Navagvas, sacrificers, and givers of gifts—those who are righteous and stand here—rejoice on this sacred grass. Just as our ancient forefathers, who delighted in truth, shone with purity and radiance, their hymns breaking through the earth and dispelling darkness, so may we follow their path. Those ancestors, performers of good deeds, shining and devoted to the gods, established in their divine birth, pure, strengthened Agni and Indra, and made for us a broad assembly rich with cattle. Like herds in fertile pasture, the mighty one reveals the divine origins. Even mortals, longing for immortality, strive for growth, O noble one, in the highest abodes. We have not acted out of self, but have entered into truth; the radiant dawns have shone forth. May all that is auspicious and protected by the gods be ours. May we speak nobly in the assembly, strong with good sons. May Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, protect me from the east, holding the earth aloft with his arms as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. May Dhātṛ protect me from the south, with the earth upheld by his arms as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. May Aditi, with the Adityas, protect me from the west, with the earth upheld by her arms as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. May Soma, with all the gods, protect me from the north, with the earth upheld by his arms as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. May the Upholder, the supporter, sustain you; may Savitṛ lift you up, your radiance above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the eastern direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the southern direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the western direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the northern direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the fixed direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. In the upward direction, once enveloped, I place you in your proper portion, with the earth supported as if above the sky. We worship those who made the worlds and paths, who are present here as recipients of the gods’ offerings. You are the supporter, you are the foundation, you are of the lineage. You are filled with water, filled with honey, filled with wind. May protection come to me from every side, as Yama, striving, when he goes forth. The worshipful, devoted to the gods, bring you forth; may you both dwell in your own world, knowing it well. O Indra, remain for us in your own place; with reverence we join you in the ancient prayer. The hymn spreads forth like a poet on the path; may all the immortals hear this. He followed three steps in form, and by observance approached the four-footed; with the imperishable he measures out the hymn, purifying it at the navel of immortality. For the gods he chose death, but for offspring, why did he not choose immortality? Brihaspati, the seer, extended the sacrifice, and Yama released his beloved form. O Agni, invoked and knower of all births, you have carried the fragrant offerings to the Fathers by your power; they have eaten. Now, O god, consume the prepared oblations. Seated in the lap of the dawns, mortals have obtained wealth for the worshipper; O Fathers, grant that wealth to his sons, and bestow strength here. Fathers who have enjoyed the sacrificial fire, come and sit in your proper seats, well-guided; partake of the prepared oblations on the sacred grass, and grant us wealth with all our heroes. Our Fathers, delighted with Soma and called upon, rest on the sacred grass in dear places—may they come, may they hear, may they speak over us, may they protect us. Those who are our fathers’ fathers and grandfathers, who have followed, the Soma-drinkers, the most excellent—may Yama, rejoicing with them, partake of the oblations, each according to his wish. Those among the gods who were eager, striving, skilled in rites, composers of hymns with praises—O Agni, come with a thousand god-honored, true, wise seers, seated at the hot libation. Those true ones, eaters of the offering, drinkers of the oblation, who with Indra and the gods ride together, O Agni, come with the generous, with the later and earlier seers, seated at the hot libation. Draw near to this mother earth, broad, far-stretching, and kindly; earth, rich in wool, may her southern part favor you, and may she guard you on the path ahead. Rise up, O earth, do not press down; be easy to approach and to pass over for him. As a mother wraps her child, so cover him, O earth.
