Within the swelling power of the earth, mysterious and mighty beings dwell: the Khaḍūri, the wandering Chankramā, the dwarf-dweller Kharvikā, and those who remain hidden within. Gandharvas and Apsarases, serpents and other creatures, even demons—all are present. Among them are those with four fangs, the gnawers, those with swollen bodies, those whose mouths drip with blood, both from our own and from other realms. As the swelling grows, it shakes forth the enemies and their roots. Indra and the Earth are invoked so that the victorious and the conqueror may triumph over all adversaries. The enemy, overwhelmed and crushed, lies slain within this swelling; and the victorious, those with flame-tongued and smoke-crested forms, arrive with their mighty army. With this swelling, Indra is called upon to strike down the raised enemies again and again, ensuring that the lord of power does not allow the supplicant to be released among these foes. Let the hearts of the enemies leap up in fear, let their breath rise in distress, let dryness of mouth afflict them—never the friend, only the enemy. Those who are steadfast and those who are unsteady, those who turn away, the deaf, those enveloped in darkness, and those dwelling in the bladder—all are revealed in the swelling for the enemies to see, and the mighty ones are made manifest. Let the swelling and the trisandhi pierce the enemies, just as Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, strikes down thousands, wielding his power. Within the swelling, the forest trees, the plants and herbs, the Gandharvas and Apsarases, the serpents, the gods, the blessed ones, and the ancestors—all are shown to the enemies, and the mighty ones are revealed. Their lordship rests with the Maruts, with the gods, with Āditya and Bṛhaspati; with Indra and Agni, Dhātṛ, Mitra, Prajāpati; with the seers who watch among the enemies, empowered by the swelling. All these lords rise up and join together. The friendly divine beings, having conquered the battle, stand firm in their stations. The mighty ones are called to rise up together, bearing their standards; serpents, other beings, and demons are urged to pursue the enemies. Triṣandhi, with red banners at dawn, knows the sovereignty and rule of these powers. Those who dwell in the midspace, in heaven, on earth, and among men—may all, with Triṣandhi in their hearts, attend to the supplicant and remove evil speech. With iron-faced, needle-faced, and hooked-faced weapons, the flesh-eaters, swift as the wind, bind the enemies with the thunderbolt of Triṣandhi. Jātavedas and the Sun are called to disappear, along with corpses and multitudes; may the army of Triṣandhi be well-disposed and under control. The divine multitude, the army, is summoned, and the beloved oblation of Triṣandhi is offered to them. Let the four-footed and sharp-toothed ones unite, along with those struck by arrows; in matters of sorcery against enemies, Triṣandhi and his army are invoked. Let the smoky-eyed one fly forth, the sharp-eared one cry out; with the victorious army of Triṣandhi, let the red banners rise. Birds and flying creatures from midspace and heaven are called to descend; wild beasts and flies gather, and vultures devour the corpses. The alliance established by Indra and Brāhmaṇa Bṛhaspati is invoked, the Indra-alliance called upon all the gods to conquer here and beyond. Bṛhaspati, the Angirases, and the seers, skilled in sacred knowledge, have taken up the thunderbolt of Triṣandhi, the slayer of demons, as their weapon. With this, the Sun and Indra stand firm; Triṣandhi is apportioned for strength and might by the gods. Through this oblation, the gods conquered all the worlds. Bṛhaspati and the Angirases poured the thunderbolt, the slaying weapon of Triṣandhi, for the destruction of demons. With that, the army is besmeared, and with might, the enemies are slain. All the gods who partake of the vaṣaṭ-uttered offering are summoned, asked to be pleased with the oblation and to conquer here and beyond. The beloved oblation of Triṣandhi is offered, and the great alliance by which demons were first conquered is protected. Let the wind turn back the arrows of the enemies; Indra shatters their arms so they cannot aim; Āditya destroys their weapons, and the Moon leads them on a path from which there is no return. If the gods of old went forth, making prayers their armor, their bodies a shield and protection, whatever they approached is rendered powerless. Following the flesh-eaters, with Death as the priest, Triṣandhi advances with the army to conquer and move forward. Triṣandhi surrounds the enemies with darkness; among those who have not offered clarified butter, none may reach the supplicant. The sharp-footed one falls upon the enemies, pouring out confusion; today, the armies of the enemies are bewildered in the abyss. Let them be deluded in the abyss; their chosen ones destroyed again and again; with this army, they are struck down. Whether the enemy is armored or unarmored, or rides in a chariot, he is struck down by the snares of the armored and the chariot, lying defeated. All enemies—armored, unarmored, partly armored—are struck down in the abyss, devoured by dogs upon the earth. Those who ride in chariots, those who do not, those mounted and unmounted—all the slain are devoured by vultures, hawks, and birds of prey. The hostile army, struck down in battle, lies as a heap of corpses, pierced and torn apart by jackals. Those wounded in their vital parts, who cry out, who are struck down and lie there, are devoured by great birds—any who oppose this westward offering. That offering observed by the gods, which cannot be resisted, is invoked—may Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, strike down with his thunderbolt of triple edge. Finally, the earth herself is praised. Truth, greatness, order, might, consecration, austerity, sacred knowledge, and sacrifice uphold the earth. She, the broad earth, companion in all that has been and all that will be, is asked to make for us a wide world. Unconfined in her middle for humankind, with slopes and depressions even and abundant, bearing plants of many virtues, the earth is called to spread out for us and grant us riches.
