The gods, the Brahmans, and even the plants have discovered the remedy, for all the divine beings know the healing power that dwells upon the earth. The one who first created this remedy departed, yet he alone remains the greatest of all healers. Pure and wise, he prepares remedies for you, O physician, granting healing through his sacred knowledge. Now, I release you from the dangers that threaten you—from the field, from destruction, from the curse of kin, from harm. I free you from Varuṇa’s noose, making you guiltless through the Brahman. May both Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you. May Agni, with his companions, bring you blessings; may Soma, with the healing herbs, offer you well-being. Once more, I release you from all perils, from Varuṇa’s binding, and make you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth shine favorably upon you. Let the wind in the midspace be auspicious to you, and may the four directions grant you favor. Again, I release you from the field, from destruction, from the curse of kin, from harm, from Varuṇa’s noose, making you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you. These four divine directions, wives of the wind, are surveyed by the sun. Thus, I release you from all harm and make you guiltless, invoking blessings from Heaven and Earth. Within these directions, I place you, hidden and safe. Let disease and destruction depart far away. I release you from every threat, making you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you. You are now freed from disease, misfortune, blame, and all that grasps at you. I release you, making you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth bless you. Today, you have found freedom from enmity; you have become pleasant and entered the world of the fortunate. I release you from all harm and make you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you. The gods themselves, releasing you from the grasp of darkness, set you forth, sinless, into the immortal light of the sun. Thus, I release you from all bonds, making you guiltless through the Brahman; may Heaven and Earth be auspicious for you. You are a purifier and a weapon; you are a missile and a defender. Go forth, seeking greater good, and proceed in harmony. You are a sling, a counter-charm, and a counter-curse. Strive for greater good, and proceed together in harmony. Go against the one who hates us, whom we hate; seek greater good, and proceed in harmony. You are wise, endowed with power, and a protector of the body. Attain greater good, and proceed together in harmony. You are bright, radiant, luminous, and full of light. Attain greater good, and proceed in harmony. Heaven and Earth, the broad midspace, and the field’s mistress—vast and wondrous—along with the wide midspace protected by the wind, may they burn here as I burn. Hear this, O gods, you who are worthy of sacrifice; Bharadvāja proclaims hymns for me. May the one among us whose mind brings harm be bound fast in the snare of evil. Hear this, O Indra, drinker of Soma, whom I call with a grieving heart. I cut off the one whose mind brings us harm, as Indra cuts a tree with his thunderbolt. With eighty and three singers, with the Ādityas, the Vasus, and the Angirases, may the offerings and good deeds of our ancestors protect us; I offer this with divine force. May Heaven and Earth shine upon me; may all the gods support me. May the Angirasa ancestors, full of Soma, drive away the evil of the one who acts with ill intent. Whoever, O Maruts, thinks himself too great for us, or reviles our prayer as it is being made—may sufferings and misfortunes befall him; Heaven itself oppresses the hater of prayer. The seven breaths and the eight thoughts—I cut them off with the power of prayer. By this, the messenger of Yama, Agni, has made the seat of death powerless. I place your step in the kindled Jātavedas; may Agni envelop your body, and may breath and speech depart as they should. Grant long life, O Agni, choosing vigor; O Agni, with ghee as your front and back. Having drunk the sweet ghee, the cow’s gift, protect this one as a father protects his sons. Bestow upon us brilliance, remove old age and death, grant long life. Bṛhaspati has given this garment; let it be worn for Soma, the king. May you put on this garment for well-being; you have become the protector of dwellings and the warder-off of curses. Live a hundred autumns, O wide-seeing one, and gather abundant wealth and prosperity. Come, stand firm as a stone; let your body be as hard as stone. May all the gods grant you a hundred years of life. Of the garment which is your first clothing, I take that for you; may all the gods protect you. May your strong brothers be born after you, many and well-born, growing together. We destroy the rootless, the bold, the one-minded, the greedy, and all the offspring of the fierce one, the constant foes. We drive you out from the cow-pen, from the goats, from the oxen, from the shoes; we drive you out, Magundya’s daughters, from the houses. Whoever is in the lowest part of the house, there is the place for the restless; there let them lie down, and all the sorcerers as well. Let the lord of beings drive them out, and let Indra be aware, O constant foes. Let Indra, seated at the foundation of the house, stand guard with his thunderbolt. Whether you are of the cultivators, sent by men, or born from the Dasyus—let these constant foes perish. I have surrounded their abodes, as the day encircles the wood. I have conquered all of you in battle; let these constant foes perish. Just as heaven and earth are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Just as day and night are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Just as the sun and the moon are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Just as priestly power and royal power are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Just as truth and falsehood are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Just as the past and the future are neither afraid nor harmed, so, O my breath, do not be afraid. Thus, through sacred words and divine invocation, protection, healing, and harmony are bestowed, and the soul is released from harm and fear, embraced by the blessings of Heaven and Earth.
