A radiant thought rose upward, shining with strength, as the skillful one with golden hands, out of compassion, measured out the very sky. To this divine presence, a prayer was offered: “O god, raise him up to the highest place, to the first father; grant him breadth and greatness. O Savitar, day by day, bestow upon us noble things and abundant cattle.” Savitar, the god worthy of choice, was invoked—he who grants treasures and lifespans to the fathers. Let him drink the soma, let him rejoice in this offering, for even the path-finder moves according to his law. The true-minded and splendid favor of Savitar was chosen, that all-encompassing and gracious blessing which Kanva once drew from him, rich and overflowing like a thousand-streamed bull, bringing fortune. To Bṛhaspati and Savitar the call was made: “Make him grow, make him shine for great good fortune. Even if he is restrained or hindered, release him; let all the gods together rejoice in him.” May Dhātṛ, the lord of the world, grant wealth and fullness. May Dhātṛ bestow upon the worshiper an unbroken, long life in the east, for his favor is sought, he who is generous to all. Let Dhātṛ grant all desirable things to the worshiper who longs for offspring in his home, and may all the gods, together with Aditi, bestow immortality. May the gifts of Dhātṛ and Savitar be accepted in this place; may Prajāpati, lord of treasures, and Agni show their favor; may Tvaṣṭṛ and Viṣṇu, increasers of offspring, grant wealth to the sacrificer. A prayer was raised to the sky: “O sky, break open this heavenly space; O earth, rise up. O lord Dhātṛ, ruler of the sky, remove the barrier for us.” Neither heat nor cold has harmed the earth; let it be opened, long-lived. Even the waters flow with ghee for him, where Soma has its seat, there is well-being. Prajāpati generates all offspring; may Dhātṛ, well-disposed, grant them. May those united in mind and birth, may the lord of nourishment, grant abundance. Approval was sought from Anumati, so that the sacrifice might be accepted among the gods, with Agni, the bearer of offerings, present for the worshiper. “O Anumati, with your favor, be gracious to us; accept the oblation that is offered, O goddess, and grant us offspring. May the approving one approve, granting us abundant and unfailing wealth; may we not fall into your displeasure, but remain in your good favor. O Anumati, well-invoked and generous, by your guidance protect our sacrifice, O all-choosing one; bestow upon us wealth and heroic sons.” Anumati came to the sacrifice for good fields, for heroism, and for noble birth—her favor is truly auspicious. May the gods, as guardians, protect this sacrifice. Indeed, Anumati has become all this—whatever stands, moves, or stirs in the universe; may we, O goddess, always remain in your good favor, for you are gracious to us. All the people gathered with words to the lord of heaven, the manifold one, the guest of men. He, ancient and new, called forth, the path-maker turning toward the one man. Their vision was a thousandfold—the thought of the wise, the light in the order. The bright ones brought the dawns together in harmony; the sinless, the mindful, gathered the most wrathful powers of the cow in their own place. Evil dreams, misfortune, demons, hostility, all ill-named and evil words—these were driven away. Whatever Indra, Agni, all the gods, the Maruts, and the radiant ones have preserved unbroken—may Savitar of true order, Prajāpati, and Anumati grant that to us. By whose power the regions are supported, who are heroic and mighty, who rule with unconquered strength—these are Viṣṇu and Varuṇa, invoked since ancient times. By their command and radiance all is established; they advance and behold with their powers. By the law of the god, with their might, Viṣṇu and Varuṇa uphold the order. The heroic deeds of Viṣṇu are sung: he who measured the earthly regions, who propped up the upper seat, who, in three wide strides, traversed the worlds for the wide-goer. Like a mighty wild beast roaming the mountains, he has reached the distant realms beyond. In his three strides all the worlds abide. O Viṣṇu, stride widely for us and grant us a broad dwelling; drink the ghee, O ghee-born, and go forth to the lord of the sacrifice. Viṣṇu has indeed stridden this, placing his foot three times; his path is hidden in the dust. Viṣṇu, the guardian, unassailable, has taken three steps, upholding the laws from here. Behold the deeds of Viṣṇu, from whom the sacred vows have arisen; he is the fitting companion of Indra. That highest abode of Viṣṇu the wise always behold, as if an eye is extended in the sky. From heaven, O Viṣṇu, or from earth, from the vastness of the midspace, fill my hands with many riches, grant from the right and also from the left. The Veda is auspicious, the destroyer is auspicious, the axe is auspicious, the altar is auspicious; the axe brings us auspiciousness. May the gods who desire sacrifice, who are invoked with offerings, be pleased with this sacrifice. O Agni and Viṣṇu, great is your greatness; the path of ghee, the secret name; you both bear seven treasures, let your tongue move with ghee for our benefit. O Agni and Viṣṇu, your dwelling is great and dear; you delight in the secret ghee, you grow through praise, let your tongue utter ghee for our benefit. Heaven and earth have made me well-prepared; Mitra, Brahmanaspati, and Savitar have made me well-prepared. O Indra, invigorate us today with abundant and best powers, O mighty one; whoever hates us, let him be defeated, and whom we hate, let life depart from him. They approached the beloved youth, grown through invocation, bearing reverence, seeking long life from him. May the Maruts unite me, may Pūṣan unite me, may Bṛhaspati unite me; may Agni unite me with offspring and wealth, and may he grant me long life. Thus, through reverent prayer, offerings, and praise, the worshipers sought the favor and blessings of the gods, the increase of wealth and offspring, the removal of obstacles, and the upholding of cosmic order, all under the watchful eyes of the divine guardians.
